Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

Does this Y's have anything to do with the Y's: Vanished Omens on Master system?
that was a port of the first part of this game. Graphically it was quite a bit less, and obviously fell significantly short in the music and voice acting department. Where the SMS version shined was the fact that it came out first and quite a bit ahead of the TG-CD version, and that you didn't need a $650 system to play it.

That was a shitty version of Ys I. Not just shitty because it spelled Y's wrong. This includes a better version of Ys I, and right after that game's ending, Ys II (which did not hit the SMS) launches. Everyone wins!

Completely different, save for art and music style. Ys III is largely considered the crappier, black sheep of the family, for good reason. I still loved it, but it pales in comparison to Ys I, II, IV, and the more modern games.

I seem to recall the only way to beat the last boss was to
downgrade your equipment to silver level.

So you're saying Ys II picks up after that?

Yes. That's how you beat Dark Fact. The reason for that is explained in Ys II, by the way.
Yep. At the end of Ys I, you read the last book of Ancient Ys, book Fact. Before you know it, you get whisked away by a strange light.

Ys II's opening cinematic begins right from that point. In the Ys II opening cinematic (awesome music, To Make the End of Battle) you see where the light takes you. Hint: It's awesome.

The Turbo-CD versions of the games make the Ys I -> Ys II integration pretty seamless.

The fan translation patch of the PC versions of Ys I & II Complete recreate that integration. Very cool.

How does the battle system in Ys work?

All you need to know:

In the GAF Plays thread also: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=332733

"Ys, the ideal utopia". Pretty sure I can recite the entire opening from memory from playing the Turbo CD version so often when it was released.

Combat in Ys II is identical to Ys I except for one huge change. You gain magic, and fire magic, especially after some upgrades, turns the game into almost a leveling shooter. The side-bump technique still works, but it becomes pretty secondary.

The first boss in Ys II, if approached with an Ys I mindset (and without yet having discovered the fire magic) will quickly disabuse you of any inclination to play the game completely like Ys I.

:D

Intriguing. I gathered from the video that it had something to do with ramming enemies but I wasn't sure how it worked. Could make for a much more streamlined experience.

In all fairness, it's not hard to read the "YS" in the title as "YES", especially when it's buried in a glut of capital letters.

Even I saw it was "Ys" and I don't know anything about "Ys" except that it's the name of a videogame of some sort.

Well, now I know it's on Virtual Console, too.

So I guess if you just so happen to save your game on a tile which enemies spawn from, when you load your game you will be killed the instant you leave the status menu and your only option will be to start the entire game over. Don't waste your money on Ys.

Y's Book 1 & 2 is one of the few games that I've never played but own the soundtrack. Awesome soundtrack too, Palace of Salmon(sp?) is one of my favorite game tracks of all time.

yipe.

Ys just looks like a generic, primitive RPG. What makes it so special?

I'm not saying this to be a dick, but I've never played the game and I want to know what all the fuss over this game is about.

decent story, decent visuals (for 16-bit pixel art), OUTSTANDING audio (voice acting is really decent and the music is amazing). Looking at screenshots and making the judgment from those is like looking at a screenshot of Wind Waker and doing the same. This game really is about the whole package.

I was so confused with the thread title change.

And these sick bastards release Ys 4 days after I leave town for college, leaving my Wii behind. Dirty rotten asshats, Nintendo, that is what you are!

It looks fugly... I already watched gameplay videos on Youtube, and I was just bored looking at it. Though, the music was catchy. I guess it's just not my type of game...

I'll just wait for SMRPG.

Yeah, then don't buy it cause if you go in with that mindset then you'll find something to complain about. For everybody else: a glorious Monday morning.

sigh... I swear it's like you didn't read a single word of my post. It's about experiencing every aspect of the game from start to finish, not watching a 320x200 heavily compressed 5 minute youtube... but whatever. your loss.

As Adol, you search the island of Esteria, gathering clues to unravel the mystery of Ys. Fight monsters that lurk in caves and towers with physical or magical attacks, and use your brain to make your way through dangerous areas filled with traps. In Ys Book I & II, the first titles in the Ys series were put together as a single TurboGrafx CD-ROM. SAMURAI SHODOWN 2 (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, Rated T for Teen-Blood, Language, Tobacco Reference, Violence, 900 Wii Points): First released in 1994, this fighting game follows 15 samurai in their individual quests. Not only does attack power rise when the gauge is full, but the player can also use a special technique that can break the opponent's weapon and force the opponent to fight unarmed. The game also allows for more movement techniques such as back-stepping, rushing forward and ducking, allowing for even more strategies. A fun and important detail of this game: One of the new characters, Cham Cham, was voiced by voice actress Reiko Chiba, an idol in the gaming community.

I guess it was a different time. Back then, it was easy for me to appreciate something as simple as an artist not just mirroring their graphics. A nice example of that is the frame around the playfield. It's nicely detailed. This game also had nice shadows on just about everything. I liked how your character would walk over bridges... he'd actually move up and down over an arc'd bridge instead of doing it cheap and just having them walk straight. And back then, just having the sword and shield appear on the correct side of the character walking in different directions was something that you noticed. Throw in the benefits of CD storage and audio, and it was an experience unlike any that I'd seen prior. When that came out (right around the same time as Ninja Spirit), I don't think I've lusted over a piece of hardware like I did at that moment.

Don't bother. Kee looks predisposed to dislike it, and to be quite honest, Ys was never a franchise for everyone. It's also hard to find a 20 year old game that's aged gracefully. Nostalgia helps lend long-time fans a much-needed filter to approaching such games so far beyond their prime. Without that, or at least the desire to walk into such an experience optimistically, I couldn't recommend Ys Book I&II.

I stagger 2 saves with any RPG I play. One gets updated with the latest safe/town location, and the other is my more up-to-date working file. It's never a bad idea.

YS ROX!

Why not just buy it, then? *scratches head*

If you can wait 3 or so hours until I get home, I might be inclined to help you out.

Edit - 3 hours. But only at cost.

I only have paypal and I'm not old enough to get a CC.

PROTIP: Just because you see the picture of the item beside the word in Equipment, that doesn't mean it's equipped. You need to highlight it with the d-pad.

Paypal has a plugin (that doesn't seem compatible with Firefox 3, but is with IE and Firefox 2) that allows you to get a MasterCard number to use for places that don't accept PayPal directly. Today I tried it out on the Wii Shop Channel for the first time and it worked. I don't know if it'll prevent you from doing so due to age, though.

Well I'm on the Wii browser. My computer is in for repair.

Finally! Been waiting for this a long time. Been playing this morning and it's old school, but it picks up the pace quickly and the music is awesome. Some voice acting in the game too.

I never played Ys before so it'll be interesting to see an old game remain cool to a gamer with no nostalgia.

What? They're sold everywhere, Wal-Mart, Targét, Gamestop. Surely you have something near you that carries them.

I don't have any physical money on me and I don't want to wait for shipping.

I should be home in less than 3 hours. I'm ok with Paypal, and I can gift you Ys right away after getting home. I'll be buying it for myself in any event.

Edit - If you want, let's continue over PM. We'll need to exchange Wii Console Friend Codes in order to add each other to our address books.
