Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

Eh, no, but I understand AC isn't for everyone.

Don't get me wrong. AC on the GCN was one of the best gaming experiences of my life. But Nintendo has really disappointed me with AC CF. Nothing really new other than online with YAY FRIEND CODES

Nintendo Channel added sales numbers for a couple of games this week

Super Mario RPG - 8646
Strong Bad Episode 1 - 9780

The numbers seem pretty low, perhaps interest in downloadable games on the Wii is waning? Or maybe a lot of people are deleting the Nintendo Channel because their fridges are full, so the Nintendo Channel is accounting for a smaller portion of these games' actual sales (though I'm not sure how that would impact the reported numbers for older VC/WW games).

I just want to note for future reference that I'm not downloading Vectorman or Super Dodgeball, yet I'm still very happy with this week because it did what I wanted, which was--as I've been saying all along, month in and month out--demonstrating that Nintendo is still concerned about how the operation of this service. It's not all about me. Gamers won today and that's a good, commendable thing regardless of my personal feelings about individual games.

...As for my not-yet-avatars and the odd conclusions you people draw, Alaluef got it right: it's the official manga, people. :P The happy avatar comes from here, and the sad one from here. I'd say more, but I'm trying to survive on GAF at least until the ToS: DotNW thread so that I can deliver some epic rant if they mess up even one thing I liked about the original thread, so derailing isn't particularly in my best interest right now. :P

The fact that the Colettes are avatar sized makes me expect you to actually use them in a weekly basis depending on the VC releases. :lol
... :O
This is a fantastic idea that I hadn't thought of. And since very few people use black-and-white avatars around here, I'd probably be able to switch my specific picture on a regular basis while still being identifiable by avatar... I'll give thought to this one!

Formatting doesn't remove your Shop Channel account. That is only removed if you enter the shop channel and use the DELETE ACCOUNT button. If you format, you can still download your games.

Are you sure about this?

All added channels and save data will be erased. Once erased, it can never be recovered. Even channels that have been copied to an SD Card can't be restored. Do you still want to format?

When you install of game or channel and whenever you play a game, an ID is saved in the system partition of the Wii system memory. When you format, all of this is erased.
When you'll try to transfert back your stuff from the SD card, the Wii will check if the ID is there, the answer will be "no" and then the Wii will prevent the copy.

I'm pretty sure the words+words+words+stats+complaining about 3D+Colette references are more than enough to identify you.

In addition, until someone uses the Nintendo Channel, no data is sent. So even though I still have the Nintendo Channel and have downloaded SMRPG, they don't know that since I haven't opened the channel in a month or so.

This. These numbers aren't:

Downloaded SMRPG.

These numbers are:

Downloaded SMRPG && Downloaded Nintendo Channel && Visited Nintendo Channel (after downloading SMRPG).

Clearly going to be much, much lower.

You forgot one, it also only counts those who have agreed to share their data, so the real numbers are even higher!

pretty different games.. but god bless you for jogging my memory on super spike.. what a great game... There was also a v-ball game in the arcades around that time (late 80s or so) that was super fun as well. mhmm.. just looked on Gamefaqs.. was it really just super volleyball? what a great game whatever it was.

Are you talking about this?

If so, yes. This was awesome. The arcade music was so relaxing yet, appropriate.

That's a good point, I didn't even take that into consideration, but that probably explains why the numbers are so much lower. I still check the Nintendo Channel every Monday on the slim chance that they actually put up some worthwhile DS demos (LOL), but other than that it doeesn't really serve much of a purpose.

Well obviously they don't represent the magnitude of the games' overall sales, but they would still be useful for seeing how well the games sold relative to each other, if the proportion of people who share their information with the Nintendo Channel was similar for each game.

Super Dodge Ball has more flickering than I remember, but still has all the fun. No better satisfaction than knocking some fool off the screen with a jump shot.

I'm about 96% sure of this... I formatted my system eons ago to fix a problem, and that didn't destroy my ability to download games I had purchased.

MM9 woke the old gamer inside me and I just DL a bunch of VC games! :D

Ecco the Dolphin, Gunstar Heroes, Altered Beast ,Street of Rage 2, Ys 1 & 2,Actraiser... of all those games the only one I played a century ago was Altered Beast and it brings back so many memories...

Also I think the OP should a link to list of all releases from every region... it´s quite a pain to check the WiiShop...

Wow! Japan still doesn't have DKC3?! Crappy month though, here's hoping that NOA will think of it as an opportunity to close the US-JPN gap in terms of VC games released (Yeah right :lol)

There are actually quite a few titles they don't have. They don't have Castlevania II (which they are getting this month also), Ninja Gaiden II, Ninja Gaiden III . . . they had to wait for Mega Man & Mega Man 2 just like North America . . . I'll have to consult my list when I get home, but there are about twenty to twenty-five titles (not counting Commodore 64 releases) that have hit North America and/or Europe that haven't hit Japan.

Man. World Cup, finally. My best memories are on Game Boy but I'll take the NES version.

Obviously the formatting will not delete the Disk, Mii and Wiishop channel as they are part of the firmware now. (or made so it looks like that.)

This is one of the titles I've been waiting and hoping for since launch and it is just as awesome as I remember it. I only wish they would have given it more of the XBLA treatment though, the online versus would be awesome.

Way to reopen old wounds, Masked Man.

Looks like a pretty mediocre month for Japan. Metal Slug 2 is nice, but Metal Slug X is the objectively superior version of that game.

As for Gradius II in North America...I've never played Gradius II, but I do know I'm pretty lousy at the Gradius series as a whole. I think I'll wait for Parodius.

Holy shit! That's pretty big news - at least to an old PCE/Turbo fanboy like myself :D Hope we see Aldynes and 1941 eventually, too.

Nuclear Muffin said:
SG is already emulated on VC, Lords of Thunder is a SGCD game.

Woah - not it wasn't! It was for the regular 'ol PCE-Super CD-Rom2, though I know you needed the most recent Super System Card (though you didn't need the Arcade Card).

Nuclear Muffin said:

There's no such thing as a Super-Grafx CD game from what I know.

That aside, this makes 1941 a possibility.

Anyways, huzzah to Gradius II Gofer! Now we'll just need the Famicom version of that, the PCE/Turbo version of Gradius I, both versions of Salamander/Life Force, and the Parodius games, and we're all set.

There are actually quite a few titles they don't have.

Current List of Western Exclusives (i.e. released in North America and/or Europe, but not Japan):

Tecmo Bowl, NES Pro Action Football, Castlevania 2, Ninja Gaiden II, Double Dribble,
Blades of Steel, Skate or Die, Operation Wolf, Ninja Gaiden III, Double Dragon, StarTropics, Adventures of Lolo, Clu Clu Land, Kirby's Avalanche, Vegas Stakes, Donkey Kong Country 3, Harvest Moon, Super Turrican, Cruisin' USA, Pokemon Puzzle League, ToeJam & Earl 2, Mega Turrican, J.J. & Jeff, Cratermaze.

Castlevania 2 and Donkey Kong Country 3 can be crossed off after October. Regarding the rest of the list, I'm most surprised that Pokemon Puzzle League, Harvest Moon, Clu Clu Land, and the two remaining Ninja Gaidens haven't hit yet. Neither StarTropics nor the original Adventures of Lolo were originally released in Japan, so don't read too much into those omissions.

Besides the titles I listed in my previous post, Japan also received Blazing Lazers (13 months), Lords of Thunder (4 months), Axelay (6 months), Donkey Kong Country 2 (5 months), Bubble Bobble (5 months), and Metroid (7 months) an inordinate amount of time after their North America's release date. And Dig Dug is a bit funny since North America received a Japan-only game about a month before Japan did.

When you discount Commodore 64 titles, North America has practically erased its backlog of games that Europe has, but NA doesn't. We're still missing six titles currently: Skate or Die, Mario's Super Picross, ESWAT, Crack Down, Gradius II, Digital Champ: Battle Boxing. And the last two appear ready to release in October.

Europe's backlog of North American VC releases not yet released is still pretty huge, although primarily confined to NES titles though (17 NES titles MIA vs. 6 from all other systems). Some of these may not have originally been released in Europe, so they would have to be released during a Hanabi Fesitival:

Legend of Kage, Elevator Action, Tecmo Bowl, Milon's Secret Castle, Lode Runner, NES Play Action Football, Star Soldier, Ninja Gaiden II, ZANAC, Ghosts 'n Goblins, Ninja Gaiden III, King's Knight, Bases Loaded, Renegade, Sky Kid, Donkey Kong 3, Super Dodge Ball, Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV, Metal Marines, Axelay, Powerball, Bravoman, Ordyne

Finally, there are 24 titles that have been released in Japan that also have North American counterparts and have not yet made the jump to the North American VC. Hopefully we'll see some of them next month:

SNES: Tetris Attack, Space Invaders, Secret of Mana
N64: Mario Golf
GEN: Shadow Dancer, ESWAT - City Under Siege, Crack Down, Atomic Runner, Target Earth, Warsong, MUSHA, Phelios, Wings of Wor, Phantasy Star IV, Shining Force II, SFII: Championship Edition, Forgotten Worlds, Last Battle
SMS: Black Belt, Rambo/Secret Command, Space Harrier
TG16: Dragon Slayer - The Legend of Heroes, Dungeon Explorer II, Parasol Stars

If only Sega would get on the ball, that list would be half as long. :lol Shadow Dancer was a Japanese VC launch title by the way. I divided the games up by the system, but they are also further ordered by date of Japanese release from left to right.

Exhausting. I hadn't seen an update like this done in a while, so I thought it might be interesting to post to see the regional Virtual Console differences at the moment.

I seem to want all the strange titles like Rocket Knight adventures. I'd want a lot more but, since I have started to collect I have a large collection of games. Mostly Genesis but, whatever.

I probably won't be buying Gradius II, but once again I'm happy to see it coming for fans of that series--and obviously they're in no short supply.

Never released in Japan. With the voice acting involved, I doubt it would ever recieve a JPN release, maybe they'll get Panel de Pon 64 (The unreleased game that was part of Nintendo Puzzle Collection) instead?

I wasn't aware that it wasn't released in Japan . . . bad assumption on my part. Yeah, the unreleased Panel de Pon 64 would be more likely, but I doubt either is released.

This is Turbo CD Gradius II, right?

The NES version is pretty impressive too, they should eventually put both up... :)

Yes, the October release will be the Turbo CD version of the game. Japan received the Famicom Gradius II before the Turbo CD version though. Hudson has just been much more proactive with import titles. I'm a bit surprised that we haven't gotten more Famicom imports - there are quite a few games that can be brought over here with very few issues. I don't hold out much hope for the West getting the Famicom Gradius II - NoA & NoE seem pretty reluctant to release multiple versions of the same game outside the Wonder Boy/Adventure Island/Monster World strain of games.
