Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

My joking sensors are offline, looks like the robotification of GAF has hit a snag.

I'm betting three games next week! For no good reason! Even though it'll probably be two, one, zero, or the infamous negative one.

No, the code handling the FM music on PS1 was cut from the game, so they could get it on a smaller cart.

Doh. So I guess the Konami VRC carts weren't the only 8-bit examples of this phenomenon.

Yeah. Worse still I had been told otherwise years ago by a so called Master System expert when the VC was still a glimmer in Iwata's eyes.

Optimism here, remember it?

NOA isn't evil, nor incapable of doing their job (that award goes to NOE) and I'm sure SSB and the three mother games will show up in some form or another in the next few months.

Don't make me link Pollyanna now.
We just have to hope Mother experiences the "Fire Emblem" effect from Brawl. There's also still that surprise RPG announcement in next month's Nintendo Power.

Anyway, on the topic of VC. I'll take Pro Wrestling anyday now Nintendo.

Do you realize what you just did?

You planted the seeds of hope in my mind that Mother 3 will be that surprise RPG; and they will germinate until I'm crushed when I get the magazine and discover that it's not.

Although in the hopes of nipping this problem in the bud, the current issue of Nintendo Power did say that it would be unfeasible to translate Mother 3 due to the massive amount of text.

I suppose one possibility is that NOA may need to do some tweaking on the EB ROM to make it compatible with the VC emulator. I recently ran across this page detailing the game's extensive anti-piracy measures, which may need to be disabled for the VC version.

Reading that link...wow. Nintendo was seriously paranoid about people pirating Earthbound. I don't think I've ever seen a game go to those extremes, including deleting your saved games once you reach the final boss.

...You know, I'd actually like to try playing Earthbound with those insane quantities of enemy encounters. Although you'd be power-leveled like crazy by the time you got to the end.

Really? Someone said that? Would you happen to have the quote handy?

Sure. In an article about Japan-only DS games:

Mother 3 is the dialogue-heavy, long-awaited sequel to the SNES RPG, Earthbound that earned a dedicated following when it released here in 1995. Unfortunately, the dialogue would take ages to translate into English, making the game's chances of one day releasing here even more slim.

(In case you're wondering, the reason that Mother 3 was mentioned in a DS games article is because of the DS' backwards-compatibility.)

Wii-kly Update: Two New Classic Games Added to Wii Shop Channel

Step into two very different types of action this week. Either battle the bad guys to save hostages and preserve freedom or bury your opponents with magical jewels. Whatever you fancy, you'll need to be ready for a challenge: strategize as a fearless hero or manipulate special jewels to raise the crush bar. How do you plan to win today?

Two new classic games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the Wii Shop Channel every Monday. Wii™ owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:

OPERATION WOLF™ (NES®, 1 player, Rated E10+ for Use of Tobacco and Violence, 500 points): A group of desperate terrorists is keeping hostages in their jungle fortress. As a member of the elite tactical squad Operation Wolf, you must invade their hideout, destroy their operations, and get the hostages out alive! Maneuver through a series of missions and fight off soldiers, patrol boats, helicopters, and more. The further you progress, the more enemies you’ll have to defeat and the harder they’ll try to stop you in your tracks (going so far as tossing knives and grenades at you or wearing armor). Each area along your path ends with a boss battle where you’ll have to find and exploit each boss’s particular weakness. To top it all off, your weapon options are also limited, so you’ll need to conserve ammunition and grenades. Operation Wolf is said to be the most valiant and capable unit in the military—can you save the hostages and win the day?

Columns III™: Revenge of Columns (Genesis, 1-5 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 points): This single-player or multiplayer experience expands upon the game play of the original two Columns titles giving players some extra attacks to spring on opponents. As in the original Columns, jewels fall into a bin, and you have to twist and manipulate them to form matches of three or more in a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line to keep the jewels from stacking up and reaching the top. In Columns III, special magical jewels do things like raise your opponent’s crush bar or lower your own, adding an extra element of strategy to the game. This is a great game to play with friends, so download it today and jump into the action!

Blarg, that's a lame excuse. Oh well, I'm still clinging onto my foolish hope.

*hums Pollyanna*

And with that news, for another week the chances of turning on my Wii for something other than Tales of Symphonia or Smash Bros. Melee remain at 2%.

If operation wolf plays with the wii mote as a lightgun ala Ghost Squad, I might bite. If you have to use the controller, no thanks.

That'd be pretty badass, but did it even support the NES zapper?

ALL RIGHT I'M OFF TO GET MORE WII POINTS FOR THOSE TWO SHITTY GAMES
I used to stockpile extra points because buying 2000-3000 in one shot, even if I was only going to use 600-800 or so, was more convenient than continually entering my info for 1000 points every time I wanted a Genesis or SNES or TGCD game.

But at the release rate we've dropped to, forget that idea anymore. :(

Actually, I'm interested to see how Operation Wolf works. It was a light gun game, but you could also use the controller instead. I want to see if they implemented Wiimote controls. I mean, I'm pretty sure they didn't (it probably would have been in the press release), but man, who the hell would want to play Operation Wolf with a controller?

No interest in Columns. They seem to be doing a good job of sidestepping the Genesis game we all really want right now.

Still, two games is better than one. Still worse than three, but at least we're headed back in the right direction.

Blarg. What a lame week of the VC. For some reason, I've been feeling an intense urge to play Earthbound and what with the game still selling at $64 on Amazon, I was really, really hoping it would come this week.

Edit: Picked up Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Soooo goood.

BLARGH VC IS DEAD NINTENDO RUINED THE WII ALL IS LOST (puts his head around his legs and pulls fecal matter out of his butthole)

Two games this time is good news and Columns 3 is another 5 player game. Operation Wolf... Isn't that a lightgun game?

Man, what's happened to the VC releases?
Sometimes you just got to have the bad to appreciate the good. Think about it another way. Less money spent is more money saved.

Uh, yeah. That probably didn't help much.

Looks like Urban Champion/Baseball has some competition.

I just hope we'll be back to 3 games a week soon. It feels like they could push for more than that, but I guess it'll have to do.

EDIT: The week after this Monday will be #200+. If it is not a fantastic week, may God help us.

You know, I don't get it. Nintendo seemed to completely understand the VC, understand what it's buyers wanted, and went on to brag about how much people were spending on it as a result. Then after SMB3 hit it was like "fuck the VC. It sucks and isn't even worth our time anymore."

I mean for like the first half of '07 I would anxiously come into this thread to see what released, and then when I got home plunk down cash for some points and have some fun retro gaming. For the last 4+ months instead now I am scared to come into this thread and see what other worthless NES/Gen release these companies dug up and decided to inflict upon us.

So how will Operation Wolf work if it doesn't support the Wiimote aiming?
Did the NES version even support the Zapper? I know the TurboGrafx port simply used the d-pad to position a visible crosshair.

Ha ha, man, I remember being worried that when I got the VC games from Amir0x, that I'd feel regret when a totally awesome game came out the next week.

Hahahaha, oh wow, was that ever wrong.

Who wants to play Operation Wolf on the fucking NES? I'ts been released on many formats, and NES would not be my first choice of the ones available on VC...

IIRC, the NES version supported both the Zapper and the controller.

Let's not get carried away, guys!

I mean, it's not like it's the end of the Virtual Console as we know it.

It's just a phase the virtual console is going through and stuff.

For those wondering, the NES version of Operation Wolf can be played with either a standard controller or a Zapper. I don't know for sure, but I doubt that Zapper implementation will be included in the VC release.

Shit, i thought the last Jsnake post was for Europe stuff last friday. :(
JSnake doesn't get any info about EU releases. Nor does anybody else, I'm pretty sure. NoE's pretty secretive, they only said what was coming in advance for December 2006 and the Hanabi Festival.

And EU releases are actually at 11 PM GMT on Thursday (But that's midnight in most other parts of Europe, including Germany where NoE is located, so NoE says the update is on Friday).

God, this is pathetic. And still neither Pilotwings nor Pilotwings 64. Dammit.

Hey i'd buy Pilotwings64. Well there's actually an handfull of N64 games i would buy but they are uploaded so slooooooooooow...

Pilotwings 64 is one of the most beautiful and majestic games from the N64 era. I think it went a tad unappreciated because of its pairing with Mario 64.
