Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

i hate you pricks for convincing me to buy donkey kong country 2 on v.c. is it really that much of an improvement? the first game is so janky and disposable i presumed its sequels were, too.

I'd have to say yes, from what I've seen. I can't give a good concrete reason for why, but I believe it is.

DKC 2 is one of the Rare times RARE got level design even close to acceptable. Very few cheap deaths in DKC 2. Good music and interesting scenery too.

I'd take DK '94 over any of the Country games though. In a heartbeat.

That game was really ahead of it's time. God I wish there were more games that had that much depth in it's moves.

Wii-kly Update: Two New Classic Games Added to Wii Shop Channel

The two games joining the lineup this week are considered cult classics, yet they deal with topics as varied as farm management and shooting enemies to the strains of heavy-metal tunes. Just don’t get the two mixed up, since most livestock don’t like heavy metal and it takes more than turnips to defeat fire-spewing sea serpents.

Nintendo adds new games to the Wii™ Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:

Harvest Moon® (Super NES®, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): You bought the farm, so now it’s time to roll up your sleeves and try living off the fat of the land. Fresh air and the beauty of the outdoors will be fulfilling, but a successful farm needs a lot of working capital as well. There are buildings on your property, but they are in need of livestock. You have a modest house, but if things get lonely in the field, it’s going to take a remodel to woo a female farming companion. Your challenge is to dig in and build your life as a farmer from the ground up. How you manage will determine the outcome, but remember: You always reap what you sow.

Lords of Thunder (TurboGrafx-16 CD-ROM, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone – Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points): Lords of Thunder is a side-scrolling shooter that has you take on the role of a legendary warrior, blasting enemies to heavy-metal tunes. Your enemies are plotting to revive Zaggart, “The Dark One,” who was sealed beneath the six continents of Mistral. It’s up to Landis, descendant of the heroic Dyu, to stop them. Choose the order in which to attack the six stages. Before each stage, select one of four magic armors and use crystals you’ve collected during your battles to buy items. Selecting the right armor for each stage is the key to your ultimate victory. Then get ready to face awesome enemies like a fire-spewing sea serpent or a giant insect. Whether it’s the fast-paced shooting or breaking into the fortress of a stage boss, you’ll be blown away by the intensity of Lords of Thunder.

OK Harvest Moon is getting bought.

My little sister will be happy when I show her this... she loves the Harvest Moon games, and the SNES original might be nice. How does it compare to the myriad of GBC, GBA, N64, and GC Harvest Moons? I was under the impression that the N64 version is the closest in actual content and gameplay...

It's definitely archaic, and the translation is something to be desired. The N64 Harvest Moon game was the "peak" of the series if you ask me, but the SFC one remains dear in my heart. She'll like it, but keep in mind it's the "first" one and has quirks (plus there's no playing as a female option).

Will buy Lords of Thunder. Do recognize Harvest Moon as a cult classic.
Still think we should be getting more than two games each Monday unless it's an import week or a system's VC launch. (And maybe not even the latter; a system showing up with less than two games to its name initially would make for quite a pessimistic first appearance.)

The third game is even more disposable than the first, but yes, the second game is a rare Rare anomaly that really, really excels in every way.

Harvest Moon has been rated for awhile, so nice to see it up.

Not that bad of a week. I was hoping the 200th game would be a first party title (Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island specifically).

Archaic is the word. The translation is on par with other Natsume efforts from the SNES era, it's really bad. No rucksack, two dead growing seasons. Tons of slowdown with a full barn.

Great music though, will be stuck in your head for all time. Best in the series.

Great buy for fans of the series, but if you were to get only one HM game for the Virtual Console, wait for HM 64, the pinnacle of the series.

A Wonderful Life?

Well, let's see.

AWL is story driven, with longer days and shorter seasons with little to do outside of farming and raising your child. The farming is pretty advanced for the series though.

HM isn't story driven, has longer seasons, infinite nights, fewer crops, fewer livestock, more festivals.

Both have time limits.

Nothing else in the series really compares to AWL. It's one of the odd balls. I love the ending, but it is sort of a hard game to get into.

HM is more like the rest of the series, excluding the PS2 exclusive Save the Homeland.

HM is a lot like the second Gamecube title, Magical Melody. In fact all the characters from the original are in MM, more or less.

It's no EarthBound, but this week's titles are definitely acceptable. I remember renting and playing HM back in the day and I couldn't put it down. I can't really stand the series anymore, but I acknowledge that they're great games.

Harvest Moon's pretty nice (trying to buy that one for the SNES on eBay will cost you tons of money), but why the hell has the VC dried up so miserably? Where's Ys? Where's Dracula X? Where's Shining Force 2?

Where? Where? Where?

Gate of thunder rocks, although I haven't been able to get past the 3rd stage. How does Lord of Thunder compare? Is it a TG-CD game as well? Also, thanks, Bubble Boy!

Bought Streets of Rage 3 tonight. Drought or no, VC is fabulous.

Lords of Thunder is actually pretty different to Gate of Thunder, a few presentation aspects aside (Same options screen). Lords has a fantasy theme, you're a flying warrior thing as opposed to a ship, and it has shop/money/health elements as opposed to being a traditional, R-Type style game like GoT.

Having only played it yesterday, I can confirm Lords is fantastic. As I say, different kettle of fish to Gate, but a brilliant, frantic little game in its own right. And that soundtrack is ROCK ;)

From a quick search, these are the available shooters on VC:

Air Zonk
Axelay
Bio-Hazard Battle
Blazing Lazers
Dead Moon
Dragon Spirit
Galaga
Galaga '90
Gate of Thunder
Gradius
Gradius III

Lords of Thunder
Monster Lair
Ordyne
R-Type
R-Type III: The Third Lightning

Soldier Blade
Space Harrier II
Star Soldier
Super Air Zonk: Rockabilly Paradise
Super Star Soldier
Super Thunder Blade
Xevious
Zanac

I've highlighted the ones I already own, which one would you guys recommend me picking up next? (Just to give you guys a reference to go off of, Gradius V, Space Megaforce and Ikaruga are probably my favorite three)

Thanks.

The site Jsnake writes for (like many other game sites) get Nintendo's press release on Friday night, they do this so that the sites can write their reviews and have them ready to post on Monday morning.

Also, it's Friday. :D

fatty, I would recomment Super Star Soldier. It's a great game (especially for just 600 points) and ratches up in difficulty pretty quickly. I still haven't beaten the game (i've manged to get to Level 6).

Why is that press release released on a thursday?
They're sent out on Thursday or Friday to press people and dated for the following Monday. Most outlets don't post them until Monday morning.

Recently, JSnake has been jumping the gun, probably because he has penile cancer (see off-topic thread)

Seriously, it's becoming sad just how many games get re-rated for VC and then don't show up for months. (Not that Dracula X is among them, though.) I can't convince myself that the issue is that a given developer would get a game rated and then proceed for sixteen weeks to not figure out how to make the emulation work; they'd more likely check to make sure that they could get the game emulation perfect before bothering with the rating.

The only alternative I can think of to explain this phenomenon is that Nintendo's simply forcing a delayed release schedule (for a reason indiscernible), though I'd be happy to hear any other possible explanations. Would give me less to be upset about, in any case.

Gate of Thunder
Lords of Thunder (tentative)
Soldier Blade
Super Star Soldier
There we go. Haven't played LoT, but going by its predecessor it's probably really worthwhile. I'd put Soldier Blade and Super Star Soldier ahead of Gate of Thunder, in any case, though all three are worth playing.

OMG YES! FINALLY! If you like shoot em ups even the least bit, you HAVE to play this game. That and its got one of the best damn soundtracks in shoot em up history. Going to be great to finally be able to play the authentic game on my TV. Heh i've wanted to play this since I got the promo VHS tape in the mail back in 2nd grade.

Videos if you're intrested:

Also I hope they kept the boss and big enemy voices. That "Gauugh wahh" noise really adds that special something to blowing up a large enemy.

ONLY TWO GAMES?!?

WTF IS THIS SHIT? NINTENDO RUINED EVERYTHING, VC IS CLEARLY DEAD NEVER TO RECOVER!

Seriously though, I love both these games. While Harvest Moon improved in later editions obviously, the SNES one always holds a special place in my heart for being the first I played.

Thanks man! 'Preciate it.

Lords of Thunder, should anyone need to see it. And another video for good measure.

After five consecutive weeks of one or two games in NA, seven weeks of one or two games (and mostly one game) in Europe, and also a few recent weeks of two games in Japan, I think it's pretty safe to say that the release slowdown is, even if not permanent, the current trend. :(

Basically, Super Star Soldier, Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, and Soldier Blade are the best ones out there. I have to mention Blazing Lazers as well, since it's also very good, though not quite up there with the others. Gate/Lords of Thunder are the horizontal shooters of choice. When it comes to vertical shooters, I personally recommend Soldier Blade a touch over Super Star Soldier, but others (Jiggy37) will recommend Super Star Soldier. They're largely interchangeable, with a few gameplay differences.

Blazing Lazers would probably be right up there among my top if the music and especially the sound effects weren't grating on a muteworthy level. :( For the actual gameplay it's pretty much aces (other than the bizarre bullet scrolling thing).

Blazing Lazers just felt like "Star Solider Lite" to me. Which makes sense, because I believe it predates both of them.

But, yeah, Blazing Lazers has pretty grating music and sound compared to the awesome tunes of the Star Soldier games. Still, I believe that Blazing Lazers is the lengthiest of the shooters, if that's of any concern.

Harvest Moon snes + Lords of Thunder = :D

Time to start looking for a point card. These point cards are rare here in Dubai because most retailers think that you can download full Wii games instead of buying there overpriced games.

The SNES version is still my favorite, probably because it's less stressful. Time halts inside buldings and you can stay out and work your fields all night so you don't have to worry about watering things during the day. There aren't as many areas to explore and when holidays come you'll really cherish the occasion.
