Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

[obligatory complaint about another two-game week goes here]

How am I supposed to remember this when the time comes? I don't even have a 2010 calendar yet. :(

Holy crap, what annoying timing on Phantasy Star II. Why couldn't they have done that a week ago? I swear they're trying to spite us.

I guess it's too much to hope they'll restore the original, reasonable, Japanese challenge level of NGIII.

The timing of Phantasy Star II works out for others and I do not think Tecmo will be doing that, for it would require effort.

Never played PSII but i'll be grabbing it for sure. Love old school RPGs. I have it on the PSP genesis collection but I don't have the patience to play such an involving game on it. Besides, i'll need to draw maps, right? :lol

Well, if you want to do it that way, you can and probably should draw maps, good luck getting through the Control Tower without some type of guidance.

I wish the mods hadn't decided to ban me for being "snarky" (still not sure what they meant) right before Christmas when we were doing that whole secret santa gifting feature.

Why bring it up now?

Two game weeks still suck, but if they were all as nice as this one, it might be okay. Both games are quite good, and both are quite brutal in difficulty. I might buy PSII despite owning the Genesis version, the GBA PS Collection, and the PS2 Genesis collection. I just like playing RPGs on the Wii, what with the save state and all. Too bad there aren't more of them...

I own the Genesis version, the Dreamcast version, the GBA version, the PS2 version, and the PSP version.

I win.

And yes, I'll be getting this one, too.

I am not complaining about the awesome streak of games.

AND FINALLY YES A RPG YES A RPG YES A RPG YES A RPG YES A RPG YES A RPG YES A RPG.

Just the thing to warm us up for Earthbound next week (what?)

Is there a cheaper way to get Phantasy Star 2 via a sega collection of some sort? This reminded me of how I always wanted to play it but...money's tight -_-

Sega Genesis Collection for the PS2 or PSP.

If you just want Phantasy Star II, no. It is on the Sega Genesis collection, but it's more than $8 and requires you to have a PS2 or PSP.

Or you could just check every Friday.

Well, Sonic 3 is on there. But Sonic and Knuckles isn't and we don't know how SEGA's going to handle the lock-on function.

Incidentally, while this is indeed a two game week. Ninja Gaiden III is a day one buy. I've gotten to the final boss of both games, but have yet to beat either one. Let's hope third time's the charm with Ninja Gaiden III.

As for Phantasy Star...I'll consider it.

Hmm I might go and dl PS II since I have never tried the series. Yuzo Koushiro does the music IIRC?

Also now that Tecmo is "done" with Ninja Gaiden, what major titles do they have left to release. Don't even mention Fire 'n Ice as Solomon's Key is a masochist's game and just hearing that music makes me squirm.

EDIT: Just checked MobyGames for the credits and don't think I heard of the main PS composer. Any other noteworthy titles (since PS is known for good music)?

Yeah, at the very least the quality of the individual titles in this new era of two games hasn't usually been in question. (Referring to opinion at large, not my personal thoughts.) Looking back since the beginning of this timeframe:

King of Fighters '94 (good), Star Tropics (good)
Pac-Attack (okay), Riot Zone (bad)
1080 Snowboarding (good)
Adventures of Lolo 2 (good), Super Street Fighter II (good)
Columns III (???), Riot Wolf (bad)
Harvest Moon (good), Lords of Thunder (good)
Ninja Gaiden III (good), Phantasy Star II (good)

But I'll complain regardless--and openly.

Incidentally, since Hudson had planned Lords of Thunder and Psychosis for February and the latter hasn't shown up yet, we already know what one of the games for the week of the 25th will be, and (unfortunately) the only impressions I've read about it are negative. I suppose if the pattern holds up, the other game will be middling or questionable.

Oh great. First Castlevania 3, now Ninja Gaiden 3. So what was different between the two versions? Were continues originally unlimited?

All of the games in the series had their music done by members of Sega's in-house sound teams, so unless you've played a lot of Sega games, you probably haven't heard a lot of their music. They did a lot of great stuff, though.

Phantasy Star I and II were both done by Takuhiko Uwabo, who's also done music for a number of Advanced Daisenryaku games, Super Monaco, and some Space Harrier. Also did Columns and Columns III. Phantasy Star II and III were done by Izuho Takeuchi, whose work you might be more familiar with -- he did Sonic 2 along with Masato Nakamura.

Both also did the programming/arrangement for Genesis conversions of a number of games. Like, Takeuchi did Alpha Lyra's music for Forgotten Worlds, and Uwabo did Koshiro's Sorcerian.

How is the storyline to Phantasy Star 2? Good/Better than FF4?

(also, weren't we suppose to get Master System games this month? :p)

Nintendo doesn't own the Tetris license anymore, not happening.

Tetris DS? (Yes, I know that they had to get the license from the license holder to release it, but it shows that that is possible)

Anyway, there's always Pokemon Puzzle League for the N64. Same gameplay, with even more options.

... or just edit the game and replace "Tetris Attack" with "Yoshi's Puzzle League", or something, because that's what it is...

I could see them just putting up Panel de Pon and charging a premium, or Pokemon Puzzle League... Personally I'd rather just get a WiiWare version of Planet Puzzle League with online play and stuff... or, you know, just buy the DS version since I haven't yet.

Never heard of it, so I looked it up at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spelunker_(computer_game)).

It's been released in arcades, Atari 8-bit computers (which includes Atari 400/Atari 800), Commodore 64, and NES. Apparently a very difficult game. I've never hear of the publisher (Tozai) before. The only thing on them I could find was that they helped develop the Xbox Live Arcade version of Lode Runner.

Lode Runner XBLA seems to be shaping up nicely, though they are getting a hand from Southend.

I had forgotten how much Tecmo phoned in the 16-bit gen. Itagaki really saved them.

Way ahead of its time... there aren't nearly as many cinemas as say FF4, but the story has more than enough twists and turns to keep you interested. It's extremely impressive for a game from 1989. Fantastic ending, too.

Phantasy Star™ II: (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone – Mild Animated Violence, 800 Wii Points): Hailed as one of the greatest games of all time by fans and media alike, Phantasy Star II is an RPG that features an epic story line and turn-based battles. Play as Rolf, Nei, Rudo or several other characters as you navigate through the Algol star system battling the evil Dark Force. Build your characters, select the right weapons and armor, and take on the forces of evil through various missions as you find the right combination of characters to complete each objective. Experience the magic once again in this great sequel.

Yup, damn right...

Shame we won't be getting the hint book, that would've been an awesome addition. Everybody needs to get this game.....

Fire 'n Ice is totally different from Solomon's key. Despite similar controls, it is a true puzzle game and relies almost entirely on logic, not reflexes. It's closer to Lolo than Solomon's key, and is a truly awesome game.

Not only did the JPN version have unlimited continues but damage was lessened(hits only took one block instead of 2(or three?) and on top of that you could get passwords to save your game.

I hate it when Japanese games are made harder for western releases(It's the main reason I prefer Bare Knuckle 3 to Streets of Rage 3, the changes SoA made to the US release really screw up the game's balance). =/

It would be silly for me to complain about this week, because we are getting two good games.

However, I played Phantasy Star II years ago and have it on the Genesis Collection now, so it's pointless for me to download. I loved the game back in 1990 or whenever it came out, but I can't honestly say I'll ever play through it again. Too much hardcore leveling-up, etc.

As for Ninja Gaiden III, it's nice, I suppose - but I can't get excited when I thought the game was already there. :) Plus, now that I'm hearing how they screwed with the difficulty and removed features from the Japanese version, I'm even less interested. Same reason why I don't want Streets of Rage 3 on the VC.

If you're in the same boat as me when it comes to these two games, just download Lords of Thunder from last week instead. You'll be glad you did. :)

Spelunker is a hilariously bad game. If you hate games that kill you when your character falls a certain distance, be advised that this game is the worst of them all by a significant margin.

Just stopping by to say that Lords of Thunder shall be my first VC download! Out of all the TG16/TD games, it's one that I never played (I only had a non-CD TG16), and now I finally can. Can't tell you guys how excited I am about finally playing this! :)

You're off to an awesome start.

Get Sin & Punishment after. :)

If you've never had a Genesis or SNES, tons of great games there too.

Ghouls N Ghosts and Streets of Rage (among others) are musts on the Genny.

Pokemon Puzzle League was mostly just a conversion of the SNES game with more stuff added and Pokemon (made by NST), but they did add one major new mode, that I don't remember the more recent GBA or DS versions having, which are the 3d puzzles... where instead of just a row of blocks (a rectangle) you've got a cylinder of them. :)

Just finished Shining Force.

Great game, now I need the sequel right now.
