Going by Blim's video, the LOD is still a bit too agressive. There was quite a bit of texture/detail pop-in during the city sections.

And no, the ppl are real time, not rendered.
I'm pretty sure the cutscenes involving people are prerendered. I can't find a link anymore, but I read that a few months ago.

Good lord, that looks insane. For some reason, I always assumed the shots taken from that area were CG...but it's not! They always show that bridge level, but this is worlds beyond it visually. Everything really seems to have come together in the end. Framerate seems solid enough, fire is now excellent, detail is off the charts, etc.

Yeah, I read the same thing.

Epic Storyline: With over 60 minutes of beautifully rendered cinematics and professional voice-overs, Lair weaves the tale of a heroic struggle in a world of savage beasts as civilization repels the onslaught of an unrelenting army.

Cutscenes = prerendered.

having read the critic's biggest complaint: they should've hooked up with Cory Barlog to ask what made God of War every bit of awesome. I'm still on the fence for this. 60 bucks is too much of a risk for me...

Called two or three different EB Games and Gamestops in the area...they're all saying it'll be in tomorrow. I'll have to pick it up. Been anticipating Lair for months.

Games that look this good are why I bought a plasma HDTV to go with the rest of my home theater setup. This'll be a showpiece for me to entertain guests with. :D

I had a word limit of about 250 words and couldn't shove all of my complaints about Lair into that, so I expanded it to about 300 and still couldn't fit them all, so I had to hold myself back and just hit the big stuff.

So, is this going into the magazine? How do you have a word limit on a blog?

How were the graphics? Impressive or...?
They certainly look nice in still shots or when you're watching a video, but the problem is that they don't serve the gameplay. More often than not the graphics get in the way, and you can't see what the heck is going on or where you need to go.

Some places like GameStop, Amazon and TRU have the ship date today, with street date tomorrow.
I think that's what you're asking :p
yeah that was it, but I was talking with someone about this (tonx or tanod) and I thought it was a mistake. Stealth launch FTW? I suppose I'll get my call that its in soon.

yah figured I'd make my contribution I too have called 3 different gamestops and they say it WILL be on shelves tommorow, and I cannot wait. I was one of the fans of the rogue squadron games, so I'm pretty hyped. Not only that, but all the new pictures are unbelievable, I can't wait to see this on my own TV:D :D

Well, I ran across Kobun's review: http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/08/...far-.html#more

It honestly isn't much of a review though with a terrible opening statement.
I agree, the review opens with a regurgitation of a negative comment we have heard time and time again. It also sounded like the author didn't take the time to learn to use the motion control and chose to "flail around" instead. While I have not played Lair, my experience with Motorstorm taught me that subtle movements work much better.

I may hate Lair after playing it and may find the same faults, but the review sounded a bit like a message board post. If you want the review to be taken serious, do not open with a flame-bait comment that is used on almost every message board that is anti-Sony.

Do you think I should even bother to rent it just to see the visuals or does it fail there aswell?

Thanks for the review Kobun,

So the controls were really difficult to get a handle on? If that's the main complaint I may still try to get it, as I really like motion control in general (esp. for warhawk). What about that special viewing mode that let's you discern friend from foe?

Thanks for the review. :) Questions though:

Other than the graphics, is there anything else positive about the game? How does it compare to Rogue Squadron gameplay-wise (if we forget the controls)?

The thing I don't understand about all the complaints about not knowing where your next objective is - isn't there an onscreen compass that points to these things? It's there in screenshots and vids. Does it not work, or is it just a standard compass that only points toward north?

There is. This is how you use it.

1) Fly in the direction of the compass.
2) Fail to get a visual on anything relevant.
3) Pass by whatever it is.
4) The compass spins back around.
5) Try to get the dragon to turn around.
6) Accidentally do the "zoom forward really quickly" move.
7) Try to turn around by moving the controller to the right instead.
8) Throw Sixaxis across room.
9) Give up and go buy Heavenly Sword.

Thanks for providing more detail....so there is nothing highlighting the objective in the HUD.

What happens to the dragon as the controller is being thrown across the room?

Kobun, how would you compare the control of the dragon to the control of Agro in SotC? Does it feel like your controlling an animal (SotC nailed it, I think) or is it some mish-mash in between that and a Warhawk?

It would be awesome if at that point he headed comfortably to his goal and perched there, quietly.
:lol defeating any adversary on its way.

The game is actually played by throwing the controller around repeatedly.

Like, just all frustration melted away and it was like Neo just crawled into your TV and climbed on his dragon mount.

The weird thing is, I know kobun is right about the complaints (based on various impressions, reviews, and just from watching the videos). Dragon visibility, wonky gesture recognition, nearly everything distracting from the mission object, confusion in getting mission critical information to the player, etc.

But that opening comment just makes it so hard to take the review seriously =\

The stealth release is a little worrisome.

Agreed, shipping on a Thursday is just a little suspect.. but I've had it preordered and paid off for a long time now, and I gotta do SOMETHING with my PS3 other than watch BD movies :D

It seems really stupid of Factor 5 to force motion controls when every other PS3 game adds it as an option (Warhawk/Motorstorm/F1/HS) to appease Wii fans and normal game fans alike.

If Lair had a normal control option I'd give it a shot, but not touching it the way it is. I'm pretty much boycotting any game where the majority of the game is played with motion controls.

I'm not going to argue that it's the absolute best possible lead for this situation, but I do have the responsibility of trying to put this review in some kind of news context. The fact is that the general-interest Wired reader, if they're following the PS3 story at all, is looking to see whether games are coming out that justify the purchase price and might boost Sony into a better position.

In the fuller context, especially given all the hype surrounding it, I think that's the strongest remark I can make about Lair as a product, which is why it's up top.

I don't think that forcing motion controls is per se a mistake. Metroid, for example, "forces motion controls." However, I think that if you force them, they need to be perfect. Lair's are miles away.

I just got a call from my local EB where I asked earlier about Lair - he said you want the good or bad news first?

"good news" - we just got our shipment of Lair
"bad news" - we cant sell it until tomorrow

Oh, I thought that person meant the people when you're fighting, not in the cutscene. yeah, the cutsene is prerendered CGI

Kobun, IMHO your review is a bit off.

It deserves at least an 8 for not being a WW2 FPS, and a 9 for not being a FPS at all. Add in a bonus mark for FLYING A MUTHAFUKIN DRAGON and this game is a 10. No question about it.
