That song sounded like Pink Floyd's When You're In ( I think, one of the Instrumentals)from Obscured By Clouds.

Great how the US misses some of the best performances of the day. MTV thinks we want to watch Pimp My Ride instead of this?

REM on now and they sound great live. I've always liked REM but I've never seen them perform live

Gervais has been the best thing on so far this afternoon. I don't know if it's me, but compared to the original Live Aid, it looks like the London audience isn't really "feeling it" yet. They obviously really need "a Queen moment" which gets the crowd going and looking like they're all are happy to be there.

Also, for anyone who remembers watching the original at the time, were the gaps between the artists really this long? I swear the original show was a lot tighter than this (although was full of technical gaffes a bit like this one).

Which one? The London one? The London one has the best lineup, IMO. If you think this sucks then the others must be REALLY bad :lol

Keane are on now and they're ok. I like their first album and I've got a feeling they're not used to live shows. They sound good but it just seems a bit...subdued

edit - just as I wrote that, they've got the whole crowd singing. Ignore me, I'm talking bollocks :lol

Yeah I am talking about the London one, the music is good, should get better as the day goes on but the crowd is crap they are not into the show at all. Anytime the camera pans over them they seem like their dead.

When I was writing this the guy from Keane said "lets have some noise then" they are too quiet, They seriously need to get into the show.

The London one on BBC, and Keane getting the whole crowd singing? They must have sore throats because they weren't singing very loud. :lol

I have never heard 200,000 people so damn quiet :(

Ditto.

99% of them are just standing there morbid looking, liven the fuck up you sad bastards.

I'm starting to think (maybe wrongly) that there were more actual music fans at Live Aid because you had to actually go to the trouble of going to a ticket agency at the time and BUY tickets for the gig, rather than texting a number to be entered into a lottery to effectively win a free day out, just for the sake of going. I could equally be thinking bollocks though.

Also, the fact that they seem to have a big, fairly disinterested looking "golden circle" at the front of the London gig really isn't helping the atmosphere (Chris Martin has said the same thing on the BBC News blog).

Well they sung about half of the chorus and then stopped :lol I should have waited 30 seconds before posting :lol

It is too quiet though, the audience just isn't interested

Damn, I wish I had woken up earlier, missed Paul, U2 and Coldplay :(

REM was good, as was Sam Roberts. The crowds seem to suck.

Can't wait for Floyd, Neil Young and The Who.

Yeah...London seemed generally sedate from what I saw...it seems that they'll liven up for certain moments of certain songs but they seem more disinterested than I'd expect.

I'm not sure what you guys expected, the first Live Aid wasn't very special either. Though, God himself did play that festival!

That really upset me, and as much as I love the music, I really hope it doesn't overshadow the cause.

I do not think Smith gives a fuck either. He called Africa a country.

I thought I could hear people cheer but I thought I was imagining it

Travis on now, they're a cool band. The crowd actually seems interested now (they're actually moving! :lol )

edit - lol, they're singing Staying Alive now! :lol (BeeGees)

I'm surprised that Bob Geldof didn't tell the crowd to cheer the hell up when he came on to hand over to Philly, given how outspoken he normally is.

Travis - Stayin' Alive!!!

This could lift the crowd!!

(I am getting a horrible Shawn of The Dead feel from the crowd. I want to throw my Batman soundtrack at them!)

Well...that is the catch 22 about something like this. People are there to see the artists they like, helping the people who are dying every 3 seconds is a very distant second to the entire crowds. I mean, if they had a 100 ft. screen with a powerpoint presentation telling what the problems are and how they can be solved, I would be surprised if they got 300 people the attend. To take it one step further, I would say that the same can be said for most of the artists. Most of the artists there don't give a flip, but they want to be seen.

BTW, the AOL stream is probably going to be the best way to see the event. MTV seems they will give more coverage to their VJs than performances.

A lil off-topic, but on CBS This Morning they were talking about how the only way real help and change will happen in Africa is regime change. I wonder how willing the world would support an invasion of poor countries to make those regime changes to make a real difference?

Looked like he was tearing up at the end of his speech/intro. I am thinking he cares. He seems to be a thoughtful person who looks at the big picture. Now the MTV VJs look like they don't give a damn at all. They are trying to get as much camera time as they can. Like right now, they are talking back and forth about what a good time they are having, lol. :lol

Geldof's on now :) lol I love this song he's singing, but I have no idea who sung it originally (I guess it's his band but I don't know for sure)

It was done by the Boomtown Rats (yes, his band) and was their biggest single at the time (Rat Trap was their second). Somehow I don't think he'll be playing with them, given that they've just started court action to get royalties out of him. :)

Yeah, that really upset me as well. They interviewed this girl after and she basically just repeated the short banner they have posted everywhere, she, like many, probably doesn't know anything about the steps required to achieve the goal.

The problem is that our culture is so wrapped up in the next cool experience, that's how anyone relates to anyone else anymore. So while people sort of understand the reality of what's being spoken, it's recieved with the attitude of another experience to talk about, not a tragic reality we have the power to change with our actions (not just our intellectual support).

Hopefully some of this will sink in with the masses, because world leaders aren't going to give a crap what the masses say in some event unless those masses continue to care enough to hold them accountable to following through on any promises they make.

I think this is the side-effect of making the whole Make Poverty History campaign as much a fashion thing as anything else, with the stupid wristbands. This whole thing is coming across as more of a fashionable big event, rather than something that's going to change the world. And a lot of people don't even seem to be there for the music either, they just 'want to be there'. To me there just seems something a bit 'false' about the whole thing. And what's with the big Nokia signs, cheeky buggers!

Atleast Live Aid was raising money at the same time, which I think fired people up. I dunno, I see this whole thing as a bit of a wasted opportunity. Raising millions wouldn't solve the problem, but it would sure help. And you could do that while still sending the message to the G8.

Also, you could end up with the same effect as happened with the Tsunami disaster where the public donate so much money that it puts huge pressure on the Governments to up the amount of aid they give, and look at the problem of debt.

Not making it a charity event has also meant that the BBC can't show the little films explaining the problem, because as a public broadcaster they can't be seen to be endorsing just one political view. They keep cutting away to the crowd anytime a film, or a statement appears on the screen. What with the unenthusiastic crowd, it's a bit of a mess really.

If I had to watch their faces plastered on my screen I would shoot someone...

...Thank god for the BBC (I cant believe I said that!)

Thanks, it's the Boomtown Rats I was trying to think of. That was probably one of the best songs of the show so far. They need more of that quality to keep the crowd interested

Our generation seems to lack the will to actually educate themselves on world issues and take action. I wish people would realize that they have to take responsibility, that it's the people that hold the power. The whole notion that this Live Aid is more of a 'cool, pop culture, fashion charged' experience is pissing me off. There are real issues to be talked about!

On a side note, anyone else having trouble getting the AOL stream to work? It keeps telling me there were errors on the page :(

Also, does anyone have the schedule for the Barrie concert? I want to know when Neil Young will be on ;)

The Who and Pink Floyd are performing towards the end of the London concert, right? CTV here in Canada better damn well show that feed :p
