I think this is the side-effect of making the whole Make Poverty History campaign as much a fashion thing as anything else, with the stupid wristbands. This whole thing is coming across as more of a fashionable big event, rather than something that's going to change the world. And a lot of people don't even seem to be there for the music either, they just 'want to be there'. To me there just seems something a bit 'false' about the whole thing. And what's with the big Nokia signs, cheeky buggers!

Atleast Live Aid was raising money at the same time, which I think fired people up. I dunno, I see this whole thing as a bit of a wasted opportunity. Raising millions wouldn't solve the problem, but it would sure help. And you could do that while still sending the message to the G8.

Also, you could end up with the same effect as happened with the Tsunami disaster where the public donate so much money that it puts huge pressure on the Governments to up the amount of aid they give.

Not making it a charity event has also meant that the BBC can't show the little films explaining the problem, because as a public broadcaster they can't be seen to be endorsing just one political view. They keep cutting away to the crowd anytime a film, or a statement appears on the screen. What with the unenthusiastic crowd, it's a bit of a mess really.
These are good points. Fahsion these days is less about having "the" thing, and relating to one another in the experience of the trend, so I could see how it could possibly be undermining the whole thing. And people may be somewhat reluctant to give money, and it may not do much to reaching the goal, but something about getting people to put in their own money seals their attention and desire to know what it's about.

Also yeah I agree it is a political thing, so there's going to be trouble with that. I don't know if networks are stifling certain elements or what, but I've heard plenty in interviews about debt cancelation and increasing aid, yet absolutely nothing about trade reform. Funny coincidence, seeing as how the first two are things already being done on a small-scale.

Well...the thing is that even if the G8 drops the debt, doesn't mean shit is going to change. The first Live Aid made a ton of money, that went to the leaders of the 3rd world countries and only a fraction of the money went to where it was supposed to go. No one is talking about that, just thinking that by dropping the debt things will magically change. Hate to sound like a warmonger, but there needs to be regime change in alot of these countries.

Also, haven't the leaders of the G8 already decided to drop the debt? That was the last I heard. I know that the US and UK were trying to attach some governmental reforms to it as well, but that was the last I heard.

Why the FUCK is MTV interviewing Jimmy Fallon about how his day is going? MTV has no fucking clue. LOL! Then straight to a commercial break. MTV is playing about 2 songs, go to an interview with a celeb, let the VJs jack off to their own coolness, then a commercial break.

For anyone wondering about the timing of certain artists in London, the BBC are updating this as they go. For those waiting for "the Floyd", it seems they're not on until after 21.30 at the earliest, depending on if they get other artists to drop songs (as has been happening all afternoon long).

I agree, it's fantastic. I sure hope there are people out there recording all of these feeds, as there is no why in hell we'll be getting all the performances on the DVD.

Anybody have the rough appearance schedule for the Barrie concert? I wanna know when Deep Purple and the Bachman Cummings Band are coming on and what they'll be playing. Where's everybody getting the info from, I can't find it anywhere :(

If you look around one.org you see they have this kind of thing in mind. The idea is for the aid to be distributed through NGOs to make sure it helps the people instead of fattening corrupt leader's pockets, trade reform so that people can earn their own money though fair business (harder to steal when it's everyone making a little money to survive), movements for government reform and regulation on transitionals, etc. Of course, if most people think that simply showing up is effectively helping at all (like all who have been interviewed thus far) it's going to be hard to make any of it happen.

I will look at the site. Today is the first day I have been on the net outside of work for about 2 weeks. Glad they are addressing reality. Do you know what the stalling point has been in the debt forgiveness agreement? I know initially everyone agreed, then there was sticking point. I read something about some EU countries wanted it tied to a gold exchange which the US didn't want any part of. I really need to read up on this.

They were bleeped out though. This wasn't.

Most of the UK gets really angry about swearing...I don't understand why...so this is probably pretty serious for the BBC. Any show with swearing just seems to attract complaints. When South Park was first shown it got thousands of complaints because it's a cartoon with swearing. Never mind that it was shown at 11pm on a Friday night and has warnings and disclaimers :lol

When Jonny Rotten said cunt on live TV last year the hosts of the show apologised like 5-6 times and the channel still got hundreds of complaints and a huge fine!

Are you living in the UK... I am... and you're completely wrong. Except the Jonny Rotten thing though.

Yeah swearing isn't a big thing in the UK. There won't be that many complaints. Noone really gives a fuck! Bob Geldorf said "Give us your fucking money" on Live Aid and its wasn't that big a thing.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......

Well, that explains the quiet crowd. :lol Though I've always found it sad that people need alcohol to liven themselves up for an event.

A lil off-topic, but on CBS This Morning they were talking about how the only way real help and change will happen in Africa is regime change. I wonder how willing the world would support an invasion of poor countries to make those regime changes to make a real difference?

It's something I've been thinking about. These guys could raise a trillion dollars, and it isn't gonna change shit as long as those dictators are in charge of things. Could invasions be done to get rid of these despots in a quick and efficient manner? Would the world support such a thing, considering how opposed they were to the Iraqi invasion? Hell, it's one reason why I was against the Iraqi invasion...it means doing a legitimate invasion is going to be a lot tougher to justify and sell to the public now.

Well this is something I never thought I see: Snoop doing The Next Episode at 18.30 live on BBC1 without the swearing bleeped out. I can see the blue-rinse brigade dashing for their phones to ring the BBC Duty Office from here.

Ha ha, anyone hear Robbie Williams getting interviewed?

He sounded pissed out of his skull and started hitting on the interviewer Ferne Cotton.

FC: "How must it be like sharing a stage with the likes of The Who and Pink Floyd and on such an important occasion? (Words to that effect)

RW(Drunk): Yeah, great, I'm big fans, though we all know what we're here for, so let's talk about you.

FC: *shocked*

RW: You're blossoming as a women, I remember when I first saw you, you were this height *Lowers his hand to about his waist*.

He then went on some rant about he was an Aries, was single and so was she.

His performance could have some comic potential.

:lol
