Anybody know how to change the default open folder icon (the ugly blue folder)?

I think I used CandyBar to change it in Leopard, but I don't see that option in SL.

Yes.

In Disk Utility, select the partition and click Options and change it to GUID partition scheme.

It's a known flaw but an easy fix after you rip all your hair out.

Nice, I like this one a lot better. It's still easy to tell which window is highlighted/selected but the shade of blue is much more appealing. I tried the black one and it doesn't work at all on darker desktops, and the glass one has too big of a border - this one is just right.

I hope that Apple changes it to something like this in 10.6.1 so I wont have to replace these files with every OS update.

Is there a conflict with flip4mac and the new quicktime? It tells me QuickTime Player must be installed unless I open the movie manually through Quicktime.

i'm guessing if theres a safari plugin it doesnt work on snowleopard

If it feels like you Mighty Mouse wheel is starting to die or gets stuck try this:

Put a little bit of water on the ball itself and role it around so that it gets covered on all sides. Don't use too much though.
Turn the mouse upside down and roll with the ball over a piece of paper for instance, but it can be anything as long as it has some good traction.
Roll in every direction and in circles as well so the dirt inside can get out.
You might have to do it 2 or 3 times.

I actually bought a second Mighty Mouse before I found out that the old one wasn't broken. :lol

i see no options button with GUID choices

only time i see "Options" is Security Options under Erase and Options under Raid

edit: ok do u mean clicking "Partition" under the main hdd? i do that and the Options button is grayed out..

Make sure you're opening the file with Quicktime 7 rather than Flip4Mac Player, which goes out looking where QT7 used to be instead of its new place.

Loving SL so far. I went the clean install route (ya ya I know! It's one of those Windows habits I'm so used to) and I'm continually impressed on how much easier it is to restore on Mac vs PC. So simple and takes no time at all compared to almost all day when I would do it on PC.

Man shutdown time was quick on Leopard but holy shit it takes like 1 second on SL. Haven't encountered any compalibility issues with apps so far. Great experience overall.

I thought that Quicktime X replaced 7? I did a spotlight search and both 7 and X come up...that is kind of weird...

You have both because Quicktime X has no preferences or Pro techniques other than trimming and exporting.

They did something similar with iMovie '08 where they kept iMovie '06 around just because they were very different and it wouldn't be a smooth transition for people that relied on certain options in the older application.

Scrolling with a mouse, but without the scrollwheel? You're kidding, right?

There were no scrollwheels on early mice, yet we could all still scroll ...

Gotcha. That's interesting. Okay, I can deal with it then until they sort it out.

i mean without having to move to the scroll bar, i dont like scroll bars! i'm pretty sure in firefox you can middle click and then just move the mouse.

also its a logitech trackball not a mighty mouse, i tried cleaning it but i cant get it working.

Although it's a keyboard solution and not a mouse, you can hold down space bar to scroll through webpages (in Safari at least).

Speaking of scrollbars...anyone think they'll come out with a new extras.rsrc file to fix those anytime soon?

I'm trying to download the iPhone 3.0 SDK for Snow Leopard from the iPhone dev centre site but the download keeps hanging after a few minutes. Any Suggestions? I've spent almost 1 GB of bandwidth trying to download a 400mb file. Having no problems downloading anything else in safari.

Ah, I see. Confused me for a bit :lol

People who want a ton of options are probably best to gravitate towards FireFox.

The new image capture is pretty sweet:

Now I know the iPhone has an f/2.8 aperture :loll

BUt yeah, it looks like you can specify what happens when you plug in each device much more easily.

yup, I talked about it a few pages back but I really like the new image capture especially for scanning. it does wireless scanning now and can identify multiple photos on the glass automatically, saving me steps when digitizing old photos. (no more cropping and "save as" multiple times)
Seriously I don't understand what is up. I went from 1mb downloads to 4.8kb downloads. It's very strange.
not here. my collection of linux distros are downloading at the same speed as before

The iLeopard guy says he will have it out as soon as the tools he needs are updated for Snow Leopard.

Has it cooled down or are you still noticing that it's generally warmer than it used to be? Anyone else experiencing this? My Macbook is definitely warmer than it used to be, even when I'm just browsing.

It's back to normal. It must have been doing something in the background for the first hour or two after the upgrade

I finally picked up an external DVD Drive today to install Snow Leopard, and everything went smoothly. It has a 30 day return policy, and I was originally just going to return the external once i used it, but I can actually see myself using it much more than the optical (if I were to get it fixed).

I hate when that happens!

Anyway, I'm really liking a lot of the tweaks in SL, including how fast it feels.

You don't have to install that or qt7 when u first setup snow leopard.

If an app requires rosetta it will launch software update to download it, same goes with QT7 if you try to view a mov that requires it.

oooh. did not know that. oh well. i have apps that needed it anyway.

Haha, that's so cool, I used the Chinese typing tool to translate the characters from an iPhone app I have called Bonsai. I always wondered what those words meant:

Too late if it's already installing.

Before you start the install there was a "Customize" button off to the left side of the window.

There was a customize button in the bottom left on the screen where you select which hard drive to install it on.

Not sure how it works if you do an upgrade or start it from the desktop (I restarted and booted off the CD by holding down C on the keyboard).

I'm pretty sure you can install what you'd want off the SL disk after the install is done if you missed something, btw.

don't quit the installer at this point. rosetta is installed by default and is only 2 MB. you can delete printer drivers on your own later on.

I think Rosetta is OFF by default. And The default printer driver setting is to install all visible printer drivers.

Then again, I could be mistaken.

Anyway to know if we have Rosetta installed? Other than running PPC apps, of course (I know I have it installed, because I can run PPC apps).

I just thought of an amazingly awesome idea for Expose. They should have it so when you hold option, a little 'X' appears like for widgets on DAshboard, so you can systematically kill certain open windows.

I'm pretty sure the default options were different between my MacMini and my two Macbooks, don't remember exactly what each were, but I guess it depends on what hardware it detects to decide what defaults it uses?

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure this was the case.

Speaking of printer drivers, I LOVE how they are handled in Snow Leopard.

Software Update pops up right after the install is done and offers you the drivers for whatever printer is plugged in. Not only is it a tiny download (~50mb) but it does all the installation and whatnot for you. I didn't even have to go to the Printers preference and add it there, it just works.

Ah ok. The printer drivers were my main thing.
Just insert the disc after you boot up the computer into Snow Leopard and then go to to the Optional Installs folder on the disc and click the Optional Installs package.

IIRC though, SL by default only installs the most popular printer drivers and drivers required by printers previously connected to the computer. Software Update has also been updated to download & install required drivers when you plug in a new printer.

The WiFi icon at the topbar is a nice little addition. Saw it mentioned before, but it now animates to show that it's attempting to connect, shows an exclamation mark when it's established connection and then goes to the normal signal strength indicator when it's all finalized.

So obvious it's crazy to think that wasn't there all along.

I think a new thing is to show signal strength of other signals too.

Googling around suggests this as a solution:

Also:
iStats menu doesn't work. All other iStats should be good to go.

Hey guys, so it seems that the kanji trackpad writing function in SL is unavailable for me? I'm not sure what I have wrong. I have simplified, traditional chinese and Japanese all listed as input methods, yet the option to turn on handwriting is still unavailable from the menu.

Is this an issue with all early 2008 macbook pros?
