Man, anyone know why my battery status would say this? I haven't really had any issues with my battery, so I'm kinda confused. I guess I haven't taken good care of it (185 cycles / ~2:45 battery life), but it seems alright...

ETA 1 hour till clean install. I needed to do some last-minute double checking, and I am in the process of backing up the last of my files. Serves me right for not doing a backup the last 2 months. :lol

Before I start, has anyone else on GAF done a clean install for OS X 10.6?

Yep. Everything went well. Just don't forget to install iLife 08 or whatever from the Leopard disk afterwards, since that's not on the Snow Leopard one.

My copy finally turned up this morning and I've just been playing with it. I got 11GB of hard drive space back and things seem much faster than Leopard. There is some oddness with Spotlight not finding things but I'm reindexing the drive now, so hopefully that will sort it.

The only thing I'm not too sure about so far is QuickTime X. It just looks odd, and while I don't have a problem with the disappearing controls - I control playback with the keyboard mostly anyway - I don't really like having no frame around the video. We'll see if it grows on me.

Arrived for me this morning and the install went well - I'm now using Snow Leopard. My machine runs a lot quicker now, I gained about 10gb of HDD space from the install and I'm generally pleased. Easily the best OS upgrade I've ever had to do.

The only thing I'm not happy with is the fact that Windows Live Sync doesn't work. I hope Microsoft gets onto that soon, as I don't think I can put up with manually moving my files between my PC and my MacBook for long...

Reindexing Spotlight fixed that issue I was having, so it's all good now.

I just ran Geekbench and it went from a previous high of 2858 to 2996, and that was on the 32-bit version. My most recent score (done on 10.5.5) was only 2779.

I just tested mine now with lots of apps running in the background, running decent speeds I think? Would had tried with the 64-bit if you didn't have to pay :|

Lol, anyone play around with the kanji character input?

It's pretty neat. Once on, your mouse pointer is off and you make strokes. The edges of the trackpad become touch buttons. I wonder if the touch buttons can be used in future?
How the fuck do I activate it?? CTRL+Shift+Space won't work...

Edit: Just noticed you can activate it only if you add chinese. Thought this go as well for japanese characters :(.

Install just finished, and 10.6 is awesome! I've forgotten how to make finder view preferences systemwide, as the icons are just too damn big, so I have to look it up. Runs quite nice, and I love it. Here are my only gripes.

1. The energy saver icon in system preferences is a fucking CFL. I do not like the idea of possible environmentalist propaganda being shoved down my throat! (I'm kidding of course. Honestly, I chuckled, but I still miss the old bulb. I'm gonna see if there is any way to replace the asset easily.)
2. Don't like the fact that the gamma's been upped. It doesn't look too good on my screen, so I will change it.

Other than that, I am in love. Now to vanilla the hell outta it! :D

Whoa, is it just me, or are external disks recognized much faster? It has to be at least 3 seconds, no way in hell this is a placebo effect, at least I don't think so. Anyone care to comment on this?

Hey dude since our macbooks are about the same age, how is your battery doing? I'm worrying right now as mine is doing a max of about 2.15 hours :O
My battery isn't in the best shape from all the constant use and cycling and leaving it on all the time.

I can get probably get 1.5 hours off the plug on a good day.

This is what I do most times and I think I need to stop. I have it charging for most of the time and rarely have it off the plug (as I am not home most of the time, I want to come back to a full battery)

I guess I should let the battery work a little bit!

*edit, weirdly now I am getting 4hrs indicated to me on my battery calculations

Also I don't think I should have jumped to upgrading so quickly. At the moment my 2 most used apps (MediaLink streamer to PS3 and iStat) aren't working in 10.6.

Time to get the external HDD out to connect to the PS3

*edit2: .gifs are still fucking up in Safari for me. Take a look at my av; I get terrible pixilation around the areas that MJ isn't dancing, then it suddenly disappears. I don't want to go back to FF :(

I've played games on this thing pretty heavily so I've put it through the paces for sure.

I'm almost positive I'm going to upgrade my mac for Diablo III, but that's going to be a 2011 title it sounds like, so hopefully they make some solid graphic improvements in the next year for MBPs.

Replacement battery for this laptop looks to be roughly $100 so I could always dish out the money for that in the meantime if I had to.

Safari still doesn't handle gifs perfectly, but they don't seem to be crashing the browser anymore.

Get this: http://ps3mediaserver.googlecode.com/files/pms-macosx-1.10.5.dmg
Works like a charm. But keep in mind, if you are using Parallels, you need to turn off the "Parallels Host-Only Networking Adapter" & "Parallels Shared Networking Adapter", otherwise the app won't find your PS3.

As for iStat, a 10.6.X Version is coming pretty soon. I need it too, but it's not such a big deal to wait a few days to be honest.

Doesn't work for me! Are you using it currently? It sys it can't find my PS3 even though MediaLink can find it, it just share files

Just installed, first things i've noticed, cant manually change app icons anymore, battery life seems slightly lower. Firefox fonts were initially messed up but somehow fixed themselves.

Quicktime X is sweet, movie and screen recording with itunes, youtube, mobileme sharing. You can open any video with quicktime and use the same share options too.

I have a few apps set to open on startup which load a lot quicker.

Not sure if this is a stupid question but does anyone know if there is a way in bootcamp to map things to the gestures like in OS X? It makes it really annoying to use windows.

Yeah, I've tested it some hours ago and it works just fine. You just shouldn't be connected to another network, thats why I mentioned Parallels before. Check your Network settings.

hmm, looks like the glims developers are actually working on a 10.6, 64-bit compatible version of glims for safari.

I can only assume it's no longer an input manager.

via ars technica forums, posted on glims dev facebook page

Also, great news on the Glims front (via their facebook):

Before the weekend, we thought it would be a great idea to update everyone on the status of Glims for Snow Leopard (including 64bit). After two long weeks, most of the issues are solved, it works nicefully, and our plan is to provide a dev build link to the fan page sometime next week.

I've always liked glims if only for the find-as-you-type support, undo close tab, session restore and Google search enhancements.

I've found it more stable and less shittastic than before Snow Leopard, personally. Don't know why.

first load of firefox was around 19 seconds (must've been looking for add-on updates) but now it loads up in less than 5.

overall speed is still quite good (faster than safari 4 loading some pages)

working on a 13" mbp, here.

Oh yes. Especially the shut downs are way faster than before. Woah, I'm setting up Time Machine now, so exciting:lol.

I've definitely noticed it with startup times. Leopard had been getting a bit sluggish in that respect, with a bit of beachballing and occasional delays on it loading in one of the menu bar, dock or desktop icons. Now there's no beachball and it all appears right away as soon as the desktop background loads in.

I got it yesterday but I am not installing because I doubt adobe CS2 will work as a ppc binary. This 30 dollar upgrade just got a whole lot more expensive :lol

For what it is worth I did the regular install on my MBP from Tiger and the installation went flawlessly. It took 50 minutes and another 40 minutes to install iLife 09 and every program I had except for Sherlock worked right when I turned it on.

It might not be a big difference going from Leopard but it is night and day going from Tiger.

I did that already. That then makes my keyboard functions unavailable. If I turn them off and then on again to just have the input command that goes away as well.

it still works but is not officially supported. SL still contains Rosetta for running PPC apps.

from the wikidot site

Adobe Creative Suite 2
http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/
OK
PPC Only Binary. Launches under Rosetta. Applications appear to work, but there may be some glitches.

cant you just set it to a mouse button in the menu thats next to F9..

you have to guess which it is (they are numbered mouse button up to 8 or something) but it works on my crappy logitech mouse without any drivers.

Another flawless installation here. No problems, noticeable speed improvements.

And I get to see the GIF threads with Safari now :lol

Yeah, like I said before without the Logitech drivers it will allow me to assign it, with the drivers it will not.

Make sure to add Rosetta in the Customize menu when installing. For some reason, the default has it off.

You don't have to install that or qt7 when u first setup snow leopard.

If an app requires rosetta it will launch software update to download it, same goes with QT7 if you try to view a mov that requires it.

Remove the F9 keyboard shortcut in expose prefs first. Assign F9 in LCC. Put F9 back in expose prefs.

I guess so. I activate all languages, as I gate those little squares.

In other news, What benefit do we get booting into 64-bit kernel. What should we be doing?
