Rosetta is not installed by default. What is installed by default is 3+GB of drivers, fonts and languages you won't use.

I vote reinstall again. This time click Customize. It goes by fast because the installer is only one page after the EULA before it starts installing. (And on previous installs, the Options button was on the HD select screen which gave options for install types, and the Customize button was on the next screen instead which was a confirmation screen before.)

did you see my posts after with the pictures of my Optional Installs page? everything says "Skip" and if i click on printer drivers it says it will install 1.24gigs, whereas if i click something like Safari it says Upgrade. if it had installed already wouldnt it give me an option to uninstall?

eh nvm, just going to do it again. Do i need to keep X11?

I'm pretty sure that you are getting the "Skip" option there because you have it installed already.

You can delete the Printer drivers from the Finder I think under /Library/Printers or something like that. Or just reinstall if you want to be sure.

HP printer drivers are pretty versatile. this could be completely unhelpful, but I had to search everywhere for printer drivers for my Samsung printer and wound up using HP drivers for it, as it was suggested all over the net. forums said to just guess and test.

Gunna try pullng 10.6 driver for HP 1022 off Snow Leopard disc.

Edit: Holy fuck 1.24 GB for printers....

Guys I am getting this error

The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/CDSDAudioCaptureSupport.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update.

WTF?

well that figure was from reinstalling SL and deselecting some options. so i think in this case it is accurate, isnt it?

232 old GB drive, 54GB free.

250 new GB, 70GB free.

I'm guessing the conversion in GB is < 10%.

16GB gain / 2^30 B= ~ 14.9 old GB. I did delete a bunch of junk in the conversion, but I think I got about 7-10GB out of it.

:D I went from 54 -70 GB.

Actually, I did it wrong.

Ok, I went from 54 ->70
Converting 54 (oldGB) into NEW= 58 GB.

SO I went from 58GB to 70GB during the install, so approximately 12 new GB gained. I ditched atleast 3-4GB of junk, but that still gives me about 8 new GB I gained from simply installing Leopard

Yes! How did they not realise if you wanted to Sleep Display, you were likely to leave the computer?!

Not my favourite, one of my of dozen or so tweaks that were long overdue and makes Snow Leopard well worth it.

...but I just got my first kernel panic in a looooong time when restarting after installing new Little Snitch :x

so wont this new "GB" system conflict with all the programs that use the old system? or will it automatically update? for example off the top of my head, most uhhh tv shows are 350mb, wont that be different now too? confusing

indeed it did! those files are now like 730mb, ahhh i liked the nice round 700. now how will i know if it fits onto a CD?

Nothing changes, really, just a definition. A "700 MiB" CD now holds 737 MB.

Edit: To clarify, according to wikipedia, a "700MB" CD-rom is can actually hold 847MB of non error corrected data, but 737 MB of corrected data, which is 700 "old" megabytes (or MiB).

It actually makes it easier. you know 4.7GB DVD-R? Well, they actually hold 4.7GB now. Before, you'd buy a 4.7 GB, and it would say "4.37GB available". But now it says "4.7GB available".

So while it doesn't actually store any more data, it's becoming a cleaner standard. I guess unnecessary if the hardware manufacturers didn't upset their numbers to begin with, but it's a good change.

There's a discrepancy with the numbers reported for a 700MB CD and a4.7GB DVD , and all sorts of other issues. A standardisation is welcomed. And metric makes sense.

I can't seem to have a steady connection with my modem/router wirelessly anymore ever since i installed SL. It can connect to it just fine, but more often than not, I can't access any page on the internet. For the meantime, I'm having to connect my old wireless router to my modem in order to get wireless internet.

Is this a common problem? I'm thinking about going out tomorrow to buy an Airport Extreme. Any suggestions for me?

I want to for the sake of consistency. This may be all well and good for the masses, but not for me.

Consistency with what exactly? This makes it more consistent with hardware manufacturer's numbers, more consistent with logic and science.

Eventually, I would say all the operating systems will use it too. Hopefully. What is Windows doing? Have they already moved?

I use CDs all the time. It ensures that older hardware I have lying around will be able to read the files.

Consistency with the fact that it's been firmly implanted in my brain. I am still not sure has to how this system works. Apparently 1000MB is now 1 GB, but is 1000KB 1MB and 1000 Bytes 1KB? What level does it start at, I am rather confused.

Yes. That is how metric works. There is no level at where it "starts" at.

Tera = 10^12
Giga = 10^9
Mega = 10^6
Kilo = 10^3
milli = 10^-3
micro = 10^-6
nano = 10^-9
fempto = 10^-12

be it metres, grams, bytes, Hz, pas, litres or whatever.

This is not hardware dependent. Nothing will change. When you write something to a disc, let's say it takes up 123,456,789 bytes. It will STILL take up 123,456,789 bytes, regardless of any system, right?

It's just that, for short hand purposes, a Mac will call it 123.4 MB, but older computers will call it, I dunno, whatever it is.

edit: 123,456,789 = 117.7 "old" MB (otherwise now called a MiB, or "mebibyte").

All computers will deal with the 123,456,789, but just report the shorthand version - so nothing has changed, just the naming.

I spoke to soon regarding consistency :lol

I just checked iTunes still uses the old system. See, THIS will be confusing. I have 12.40 GB of movies according to iTunes, but my actual movies folder is 13.1 GB, EXACTLY the conversion rate. And my iPhone is reported as a 14.6 GB device in iTunes (yes, I know operating system, but that's only about 350 MB.

Hopefully this will change.

I have no trouble with using "GiB" and "MiB" as long as I never ever have to actually say "gibibytes" and "mebibytes". Verbally I'm going to be using "giga" and "mega" whether they're 1000^n or 1024^n.

see this is seriously going to confuse me. im the type of person that likes to occasionally double check certain things. for example, i might look in my itunes and see how much space is being used on my iphone. if i think it looks weird ill go searching into the various folders and compare sizes. now its going to be much harder with the conversion.

ill probably get used to it, but i find it weird that apple suddenly decided to switch to metric and not even make it system wide.

I have no doubt they will change it. They have to.

To clarify overall, Apple are just adopting the correct standard. It doesn't make sense that Giga should mean one thing every where else, but something different in computing -hence the adoption of Gi(bi) for binary. They should either convert everything to GB, or start reporting everything and use the real unit GiB. I guess Apple chose the former.

But dammit, it's only going to get more confusing if they don't change it for all the apps too.

Haters gonna hate.

To see how much you recovered in space, go to Console -> Files -> /private/var/log -> install.log. And then type in ‘reap’ in the search filter.

Quicktime X hidden prefs!

Disable rounded corners: defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGCinematicWindowDebugForceNoRoundedCorners 1

Autoplay: defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGPlayMovieOnOpen 1

Wow, I reaped 10.5GB! I never realised it saved me that much space. Seemed like around 7GB or so. Or is the Reaper invoked after Installer has copied it's temporary files to the HDD?

Also, thanks for the autoplay! Hope it autoplays when you seek do a different part of the video with that set. I mean, why the fuck do I have to click play again after I seek? Sometimes it auto resumes play after seeking, arbitrarily.

Damn, it doesn't fix the seeking. But on further experimentation, it seems like if you were to click and drag the progress thing to another position, it will continue playing from that position.

But if you were to click on a position on the progress bar like I usually do, it'd move to that position and pause the video.

But then if you were to click on a position close to where the video is currently at, it skips there and continues playing.

WHAT THE FUCK.

man SL seems so much slower to me there must be something wrong. just a couple things, if anyone could compare to theirs that would be great

1. icon load time. if i open the Applications folder the icons are still on their default icon with the A and it beachballs when i try to scroll until they load. same for the icons for media files in the stacks folders. never had to see them load until SL

2. multitasking seems down. doesnt happen all the time but it seems like my programs definitely beach ball more than normal

3. for people with unibody macs, can you try 4finger swiping up and down really quick, like a split second. if i do this, it gets "stuck" at the "up" position, and if i swipe down, it doesnt go back to normal like it should. i have to swipe up again to fix it.

4. harddrive activity. i cant tell if its hotter or anything, but its making a lot more noise than before. its not loud noise, just that normal harddrive activity noise you hear all the time on PC desktops. for some reason i dont remember hearing it on my macbooks before, although i could be wrong about that.

and yea, i also have the quicktime seeking problem. its really weird. not to mention the fact that X doesnt mute the sound of background videos.

beta for Growl with Snow Leopard support/64bit profane

edit: meant pref*pane above, SL's auto text correction doesn't like that word apparently. Should maybe disable that feature for now..

Anyone try this out? I'm dying without the growlMail plugin, but if the beta is going to give me many issues,I'll just skip.

EDIT: So far, my MBP (from July 09) seems all around a bit faster, though I haven't touched video or photo editing yet. The finder is significantly quicker, which is good enough of an upgrade for me alone.

I saw some reviews say they totally recoded the finder. If they actually did that and it's not marketing speak, I kinda wish they would have changed up the UI a bit, even if just for a change of pace.

So, is there anyway to change the startup sound? I know it is a practical impossibility on past OSes (due to how it works), but I was wondering if there was any chance of changing it this time around.

I'm trying to configure Google Calendar and iCal to sync properly. I'm hoping a brilliant GAFer knows how to solve the unusual redundancy below.

akdbba.png

I've done what Google Calendar's help file has said to do. I went to

preferences > accounts tab > add account

and used the provided option to sync with google calendar after providing username and pw. I named the Account 'Google Calendar'. My primary calendar on Google Calendar is my 'Personal' one.

After that I added in the delegates page of the new account the 5 calendars. For some reason, 'Personal is shown under both Delegates and the Google Calendar account section. Also, within Delegates, there seems to be unnecessary sub categories. Is there any way to prevent this in setup? Or is there any way to change the aesthetics to not show the unnecessary items/categories? It seems a needless nuisance to classify items this way. FYI, I'm using Google Sync to sync between my iPhone and Google Calendar.

Also, are there any better alternatives to iCal? I'm quite fond of it, but if calendars are displayed this way, I might look for alternatives. Also, since Google Calendar cannot sync iCal tasks, are there any other recommended programs for handling task lists on Mac? Preferably one with its own 2-way sync to the web? Some iPhone support and iCal tie in would be preferable as well.

The icon loading seems mostly the same to me in Snow Leopard, if not faster. The Address Book displays the default App icon when the Applications folder is first opened for me too, but it seems faster after that.

I'm talking about the icon in Cover Flow here, because that's the default view mode I have.

I have noticed that the new Finder fucks up when trying trying to load the icon for IPSW iPhone/iPod touch firmware restore files. It seems to freeze on them for about 2-3 seconds per file before displaying the icon. Not sure what's going on there.

I can't vouch for your other issues, but I also have a problem where sometimes, when browsing folders on a USB drive (only had it occur on one drive), the entire system freezes apart from the mouse, for 2-3 min at a time. Including the menu bar, clock etc, which is pretty rare on OS X. No idea why, but that's the most annoying bug I've encountered.

Also, you know what QuickTime needs? An Always on Top feature. If anyone knows of a plist entry or any other method to make it happen, please let me know!

I haven't tried the built-in Google Calendar sync, but the way it worked when you had to configure it via Calaboration was pretty dumb and added unnecessary junk too. :/

I'm honestly not sure about these reports that Growl doesn't work or only partially work because I haven't experienced any part of it not working with the older version. I will try the new one since it has a 64-bit Preference Pane.

I haven't used GrowlMail ever since it made my Mail slow and crash 90% of the time on startup.
