It's back to normal. It must have been doing something in the background for the first hour or two after the upgrade
Thanks for the response. Mine is still noticeably warmer. The fans aren't going full speed like when I use Photoshop or something, but I am getting a lot of warmth from the left side near the esc key when I'm just browsing the web. Wasn't like this before SL, so I'll have keep an eye on it.

yea thanks i found the location of it, i was just wondering why i got that prompt. i have never used this CCC or w/e that is either.

not sure what you mean by other iStats should be good to go. all i use is iStat Menus so dont even know what "other" things there are

oh and just to put my experience in here, my Multiclutch works fine. i think some people were having problems with theirs?

iStat Server (for linking with iPhone) is ok, although I may need a new sensors module.
iStat Pro, the dashboard widget, works fine.
iStat Nano, the min widget supposedly works fine.

I don't use iStat Menus, but it's on the Snow Leopard Incompatibility list.

Who knows, it just seems to have lost the system events. Hopefully it's not a recurring thing.

finally installing SL. quick question though, i didnt see the option for the printer drivers and Rosetta and all that jazz, where do i set all that? its currently installing with 40 minutes to go

Needed to hit the "Customize" button. I'm sure you can install those extra things by using the "Optional Installs" installer file.

Oh & since everyone was doing it, I might as well join in too

oh wow, iStat Pro sounds much better to me since i dont always need to be looking at my stats. thanks!

and i just tested out running a WMV file. first off there was no more "importing wmv file" box, it just said loading. then after i closed the video the "importing wmv file" box came up twice. weird.

After using SL for about ~36 hours, I'm also getting increased fan activity from simple tasks such as browsing. It got so bad on FF that I'm currently using Safari right now. Hope this "issue" (is it even an a real issue?) will get patched in the next update.

But other than that, I'm loving the refinements. Stacks is finally usable to me! :lol

Hey guys, so it seems that the kanji trackpad writing function in SL is unavailable for me? I'm not sure what I have wrong. I have simplified, traditional chinese and Japanese all listed as input methods, yet the option to turn on handwriting is still unavailable from the menu.

Is this an issue with all early 2008 macbook pros?

I have an early 2008 MacBook Pro and I can use the Kanji trackpad. And you can see it works fine for me:

20r9t9j.png

Do you have it flagged on here:

(System Preferences)
30rm9lg.png

and in a selector should show in your menu bar:

2qw1l69.png

Also check that the key combination is not set to something else.

Ashhong, yup I like iStats pro much more, and it doesn't need any module installed to work.

I think my hard drive is dying. Disk Utility always reporting some errors every few weeks. God damn SSD prices need to fall quicker.

Yeah, the option isn't available in Languages and Text for me. I have a MBP from just before the multi touch gestures (like rotating photos) were added.

so went into optional install on the SL and this is what it looks like...keep in mind that i used a SL dmg that i put onto an external HDD and that I didnt do any custom install

is that saying that i dont currently have printer drivers installed? is it also saying i didnt install the latest apps like Safari?

It will still work with 32 bit apps. it's not allowed (by Apple) to work with 64 bit apps.

so, it's OK with Firefox or Camino. But it won't work in Mail, Safari, Address book, iCal, etc unless you set them to run in 32 bit mode.

if you happen to have a core duo machine (32 bit chip) then Multiclutch will "just work" with all apps since they'll default to 32 bit mode.

Oh, my mistake then, the early-2008 MacBook Pro normally refers to the one with multi-touch gestures. If you bought it before you may be out of luck:

Innovative Chinese character input.

Until Snow Leopard, if you wanted to enter Chinese characters on a computer, you had to type in the phonetic spelling of Chinese words and the computer would convert them into proper Chinese characters. Snow Leopard offers a breakthrough new way to enter characters: You draw them right on the Multi-Touch trackpad in your Mac notebook. They’ll appear on the screen in a new input window, which recommends characters based on what you drew and lets you choose the right one. The input window even offers suggestions for subsequent characters based on what you chose.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/refinements/

Sounds like you need a multi-touch trackpad. It doesn't really use more than one finger input, however, so it might be a hackable feature, unless it's really using a hardware feature of the multitouch pad.

Ashhong: that looks odd to me. It's like you have connected to every single Printer known to Snow Leopard.

Whne I had my optional install it looked more like:

Printers on this Mac => 0 bytes (I already had drivers installed by software update prior to SL).
Nearby Printers and Popular Printers => 600MB
All Printers => XXGB.

Hurm, I guess I must have been mistaken then.

What you say makes sense. The number on the right is how much it will install - I must've been remembering the numbers as I checked them.

I checked Only printers for this mac, and it was 0 (even though I have several printers).

so then the printer drivers didnt install? like it shows above, when i check mark "All" it says it will install 1.24GB, is that how much everyone else's was? isnt it strange that it didnt install it automatically?

also why does it still say it can upgrade Safari? i think im running 64bit here...weird stuff man

If you are going back into the custom install, it showing you can install it doesn't necessarily mean you don't have it installed, I think. Could be wrong. Check the other app sin the Applications area.

NOT installing printer drivers automatically is the default I believe - part of the streamlining.

I did an upgrade, and by not installing, it actually went and deleted all my existing drivers that I didn't use.

i just figured this out as well. i assume you mean you want to replace the files? right click the dock.app and press "Show Package Contents" and then navigate into the folder that shows up. you should see the files u need to replace

SL messed up my colors...everything seems less vibrant. not sure if thats good or bad because it used to be too vibrant...but yea...check it out, the picture on the right is my desktop a week ago, and the left is a portion of it now..

edit: looks a little darker when looking at it in my firefox than it should...but you can see the difference.

Ok, sorry for the stretch, but has anyone encountered THIS:

35hlrbl.png

When I scroll, colours start changing, sometimes quite smoothly, actually. But the font rendering is messed up too.

I know at least TWO things are at fault.

Safari - it only happens in safari, and it changes as you scroll. I used to get horizontal tearing in Safari, but never this. I know Safari breaks a few things to render quickly, sun as disabling V-sync or something.

Color profile - so I use a custom profile, and other profiles seem to fine. Custom made from a SPyder2, but using PPC softer on SL (my other profiles were made on Leopard).

I could switch between colour profiles, and none of the other profiles did this (in my limited testing). I've since closed safari and reopened, and now can't replicate it.

I believe it's a bit of both Safari, but also how Snow Leopard handles colour profiles - I just think there's something wonky.

My main concern is could this be a graphics card issue? I have an Nvidia graphics card that Apple will say will cover out of warranty. I just wanted to get an idea if a failing graphics card gives such symptoms, but even if not, just thought I'd throw this out there.

i remember people were having this exact issue with the aluminum macbooks. issues when scrolling down a page such as screen tearing or color changing fonts. i really cant remember the circumstances of the issue though, sorry.

yikes! all i know is that colours are different in SL, default gamma is lower or higher or something, I think maybe it has more options as well? could it be that the profiles somehow aren't compatible? i guess you can't easily just redo it though

Caught between two image posts.

Well, not much to be honest. While a very important 'behind the scenes' OS update (increasing efficiency, laying groundwork for future efficiency), it offers very little to an average end user who just wants to browse the web.

A lot of little bugs are fixed, many things run a lot more smoothly, and things operate a lot more quickly (shutdown and start up are markedly improved).

In terms of visible features, a few graphical changes and general UI changes, but nothing earth shattering.

The main thing you'd get is being up to date and set for future applications.

Cheers,

Well I found the folder and swapped the files but I am still getting the horrid phat blue line around expose. I guess I need to do more searching.

I don't think the other guy came back with any info for me for tweaking OSX via the terminal, so I think I'm going to do a 3 in the morning google run, whilst watching The Wire

Yup, I know there were issues with tearing in Safari, as I stated. I wonder if this is the new version of that :p.

Something is DEFINITELY up with the way Snow Leopard handles display profiles. I'm not convinced it's an incompatibility per se, as the Apple documents say that old profiles will continue to work. The new profiles have more entries added in, and I can't prove this, but I SWEAR that the default profile is more accurate at rending pictures (it used to be too green). The profile isn't the end of the story, because my 10.5 profile (I saved it before upgrading - see I told you I'm obsessed with this) acts like the new one (except gamma 1.8).

I'm sure there will be more revealed in the weeks to come as more users find out what's going on.

After changing any system stuff, it always helps to repair permissions (Disk Utility), and then do a reboot. A lot of stuff like graphical elements and even UI extensions are stored in cache.

Will do! I thought so, but just started streaming The Wire and didn't want it to stop!

All you have to do is relaunch the Dock and you should see the changes.

Just go to Activity Monitor (under Apps > Utilities) and click Dock and then Quit Process in the toolbar menu. It'll quit and relaunch the Dock immediately (without a reboot or anything) and you should see your changes.

bah, does anybodys gmail not work??? when i load it in firefox i get a "could not load everything" error message, then if i try to type a reply email it says "rich text editor couldnt be loaded"

edit: ok weird, it only gives me error messages if i load Gmail through my "Webmail Notifier" addon

edit2: also when i try to open system pref panes like Multiclutch it says it needs to restart Sys Preferences...anybody else?

System Preferences is now 64bit. 64bit System Preferences has to reboot and launch in 32bit when you try to open a 32bit preference pane.

bahhhhh of course, such a simple answer :lol

one more thing (for now) is that i notice a lot more uh, i guess its harddrive activity? i can hear it working a lot more than i used to, which is weird.

and regarding the colors, i think Apple actually fixed a part of it. thinking back, i remember that my Sunshine background looked darker on my desktop than it did in preview. Now it looks the same.

i even went through making another profile using SuperCal and it looks about the same as before...with a little less green push.

oh..and overall my computer seems slower. from the icons loading in stacks and the applications folder to my dashboard widgets, everything takes longer i think. thought SL was supposed to be quicker?

Still didn't work with this method or the kill all one. I think I'll restart in a bit

I guess yours is the 667mhz instead of the 800? If it is than that would be fine, if yours is the 800 though I would get the 6400. It's what it recommends anyhow depending on what you select.

Ya, there aren't really any options except what speed if you're sticking with crucial. The only real difference would be if you switched brands for some odd reason.

Crucial is a decent brand but you can get that amount for cheaper. If you dont mind rebates I got 4gb Corsair (which i think is better) for under 40. Just gotta be on the lookout for sales

does the 800mhz work in 667 slots? if so, heres a cheaper one with just a quick newegg search, im sure better can be found

don't quit the installer at this point. rosetta is installed by default and is only 2 MB. you can delete printer drivers on your own later on.
Rosetta is not installed by default. What is installed by default is 3+GB of drivers, fonts and languages you won't use.

I vote reinstall again. This time click Customize. It goes by fast because the installer is only one page after the EULA before it starts installing. (And on previous installs, the Options button was on the HD select screen which gave options for install types, and the Customize button was on the next screen instead which was a confirmation screen before.)

Has anyone updated their bootcamp drivers to v3.0? (off the 10.6 disc). I did (I run W7 x64 RC) and after a restart I could access my Mac HD, as advertised, but when I navigated to my user folder, all I see is a file named "Account," of an unrecognized type and appearing as 0kb. Has anyone else encountered this and aware if its done on purpose? I'm hoping to access my music and things in the default user/music and user/music etc. All of the other folders, including applications, user/guest etc. show their complete contents. I do not have filevault enabled. Any ideas?

If all you need to do is install Rosetta, you don't have to reinstall again. I forgot to install Rosetta and Quicktime 7 when I first installed SL. There's actually an install package on the disc called Optional Installs where you can install stuff like printer drivers, rosetta, quicktime 7 and a few other things.

My favorite thing about Snow Leopard is how it will finally ask for a password after coming out of Sleep Display. No more black screensaver for me :D

Thinks he should have been the one to kill Batman's parents.
No issues with Snow Leopard so far. Wasn't expecting any based on the compatibility list, either. I appreciate what Apple did with this update: consolidate gains, tweak, lay groundwork for the future, and keep it cheap. Give me a consistent interface in 10.7 and we'll really be cool, Apple. For now, Snow Leopard is a real nice bunch of miscellany.
