Anyone else experiencing constant or near constant crashing from:

Handbrake
MPEG Streamclip
iMovie
Garageband

I used Garageband yesterday to edit a podcast - not a single crash. In fact it behaved a lot better than normal! I'm used to getting a lot of spinning beach balls that just hang forever, and when that happened yesterday they didn't last as long and didn't give me a "track couldn't be played, the disk is too slow" error.

Can anyone else not access iPhoto images when trying to pick a Desktop image via System Preferences?

I get this poorly worded error in the console:

30/08/09 8:34:52 PM System Preferences[354] **** DesktopPref error: DSKiPhotoRootSource -loadData TIME OUT!!! There something wrong with iLife Media Browser

You'd think Apple would use a grammar checker or something ;)

There is definately an issue with Airport in Snow Leopard, my girlfriend almost killed me for upgrading her Mac when the Airport stopped working.. it wouldnt stick to our home network.

A bike ride and two hours later and it seemed to have fixed itself.. it was definately not router related.

Man, after reading these last few pages, I'm kinda glad I was too busy to upgrade my machines this weekend. Think I might sit back and wait for 10.6.1.

This has always been the case with OS upgrades. Even for minor OS updates, people tend to get things that break.

snow leopard and windows7 are the only times i have ever installed an OS on release.. never again. i haven't had any major issues, but the small quirks really annoy me. i'm going back to waiting for x.1 and sp1.

Maybe I’ve just been lucky but I installed 10.4.0, 10.5.0 and 10.6.0 with no major issues.

I feel for you guys out there dealing with the headaches of the update. hopefully 10.6.1 hits before the end of september

I've been through 10.3.0 10.4.0 10.5.0 (no SL since my mac is a PPC)
never had a problem, but generally waiting for the x.x.1 is a GOOD idea since the x.x.0 is like a massive beta testing

Yeah, same here. I've also got a weird rendering bug on desktop image in the first half an hour of use of SL - something that hasn't happened in months of use of Leopard. It painted some pixelated portion of desktop image in black, and the problem didn't go away until I logged off, and back in. But my biggest complaint is that not everything is quicker. In fact, the things I care about the least (startup/shutdown speed) have gotten the biggest speed bump, while things I use constantly have become slower: expose/desktop and video playback in QT.

I'm having good luck here with pretty much everything. I had the AirPort problems with 10.5 but everything's smooth sailing and I'm not even having the problems connecting to peers in 64-bit Transmission.

Any clue when we'll get a 64-bit iTunes? It's really the only Apple process I'm running that's still 32-bit.

Apple's Media Event is on the 9th. iTunes 9 is rumored to be released at the event.

I am hoping for a complete 64 bit rewrite of iTunes to be shown at next week’s iPod music event. (sept 9, 10 AM PST) but there’s been no rumors out there saying this is likely.

browsing music in list mode is fine, but it gets so slow when I’m looking through my apps or using grid view for artists and stuff. It needs to speed up

If something isn't actually a bug, I've discovered, for me, a lot of the small quirks are preferences that I got used to, so I find the differences odd, rather than bad.

For example, the new purple borders on highlighted expose windows? I hated them, but given a couple days, I don't even care any more.

I think it's a little bit hasty to be the kind to update on release then spend the next week trying to configure settings to make it behave like it used to.

I've decided to give some of the new features a chance.

Sigh... my wife and I do a lot of printing, and we weren't able to print after upgrading to 10.6. No driver to automatically download from Apple, and no driver to manually download from HP. We're just shit outta luck, for now.

Sounds like dozens of HP printer models don't have 10.6 drivers yet, and that some lines that aren't even that old are being phased out and won't be getting drivers:

64 bit would be great but really a 32 bit full rewrite would be fine - it's just that it's still got way too much ancient legacy code from SoundJam.

I just figure that if it’s being re-written in Cocoa, the capability of 64 bit-ness comes along for the ride.

of course, there’ no guarantees. I think it would be a little embarrassing if Apple didn’t have an iTunes rewrite available for this week but, frankly, I don’t expect too many people to care outside of tech circles.

Did it stay fixed though? I have the same problem and it does correct itself once in a while on my end but that only lasts maybe ten minutes tops before it starts dropping me from my wifi connection again.

Blah. I must be retarded cause I can't get Gmail to work properly on Mail (although oddly enough my exchange email works like a charm).

Is there a setup guide somewhere I can consult? It literally just sits there trying to connect and load up my mail (but it can verify my account information just fine when I'm readding my gmail account). I also can't seem to send email. The loading icon spins continuously and a few minutes later tells me that the email cannot be sent.

Anyone have any advice?

I've noticed Airport wonkiness, as well as Bluetooth.

When I wake my iMac in the morning, it would be nice to know what series of things I need to do to connect to my Bluetooth mouse (not a shitty Apple mouse).

Dammit. I was hoping it was an error for everyone. If I'm the only person who has it, it must be something on my end, and it may never get fixed. Maybe 80,000 photos has something to do with it?

I finally found a copy of Snow Leopard in my city today... I've been seeking around every shop selling electronics goods to find it since friday... Gosh, I hate how isolate my city is.

Anyway, the installation went well on my Mac Mini (it took an hour or so) and I used for the first time ever my Remote Disk application on my MBA to install it. It took 3 hours but how awesome is it, to install an OS remotely, wirelessy.

I like how the Finder is filled with little but really good improvements. But there's still some little problem, as the adress book, not localized in French (not a big deal, but funny to see that Apple forgot/didn't see it before release).

Waiting for FireFox 64bits now to compare with Safari, and definetly anticipating all new 64bits apps (iTunes 9, iWork'10... and Adobe CS5 in a greater future)

I had this issue in 10.5.8. As soon as I upgraded to SL it fixed it. Are you running istat menus?

Just iStat Pro widget.

I actually have a big problem with the look of QT X and the new Dock contextual menus. Or, rather, it's the fact that they clash so much with Aqua - they look great on their own. I just hate having the "empty trash" dialog from the Dock pop up a window that looks like it's from a completely different OS. Hopefully Apple standardizes the look of the operating system (finally) in OS 10.7 if they're spending 10.6 modernizing and trimming the code.

Sorry Rubx, I don't have that issue.

For the record, I play around with System bits and piece very RARELY. I do it sometimes (for example, I edited the 10.5 keyboard extensions to give me four finger gestures), but when I upgrade, I tend to reverse the edits before updating. I don't add crazy extensions, so for me, most things work, if there's ever a bug, chances are more people experience it.

That said I'm getting to the bottom of my iPhoto/System Preferences issues. It must be to do with the number of images. I have around 80,000. Furthermore, there is something inherently different between the Desktop pane and the ScreenSavers pane, as ScreenSavers EVENTUALLY loads it when the Desktop pane does not.

A workaround at the moment is to close System Preferences on the ScreenSavers pane, so when you open it again, it defaults to ScreenSavers, preventing the Desktop pane trying to load it. Once the photos have loaded in ScreenSavers, then switch over to Desktop, and they were all there for me.

Give it a few days, you'll probably get over it (like I stated above), and maybe even grow to like it. A lot of initial negativity (bugs aside) for anything new that you use extensively is often just "it's not like how it was" vibe.

Sometimes I like the slight differences in UI. It makes for easier distinction between the parts. The contextual menu on the dock is different so that it's distinct from the rest of the operating system. If you use the dock (as I do) on the left/right side of the screen, the contextual menus actually match it more and are more suited to the style.

Of course the age old argument of why Apple doesn't give users the option crops up.

I had to do some ninjitsu to get my printer to work. It's absolutely ridiculous to think that my five year old printer can't have driver support on HP or Apple. What is this world coming to? We have to upgrade our printers every six months now?! It's not like this model type has been discontinued.

Here is where I'm the opposite. My Logitech bluetooth mouse connects much much faster after sleep. In fact, half the time, under Leopard, I would be able to open up everything I needed using the trackpad of my Macbook before the stupid mouse kicked in and let me actually select things. Now it's about 3 to 5 seconds and I'm ready to go.

I have a pretty new HP Photosmart printer that is supposed to be compatible with Snow Leopard but since I upgraded I have lost some functionality. I can still print just fine but I can no longer scan directly from the printer (using the printer's own buttons and LCD screen) directly to the computer. I hope they fix this soon but I doubt they will as HP's driver support has always been totally shit. And of course there's no online tech support for Mac customers.

Interesting. I lost the ability to print double-sided on our networked HP printer.

Interestingly, prior to upgrading, about a week or two ago, I was having issues printing anyway, and downloaded official HP drivers and installed them. A few days later, Apple Software Update downloaded drivers again. I thought it was a mistake at first, since I still had the issue (Why would HP have out of date drivers?). And I thought it was odd that printer drivers were coming from Apple. Then, when I upgraded to Snow Leopard, I clicked to install drivers for all my printers and it said none to install, and kept my HP one - maybe they were testing the new driver delivery?

Still, all I know is that I lost functionality on the HP printer.

it was mentioned earlier in this thread, I think, that the app rivet was broken for sharing media to the PS3 and 360. well, I downloaded it to giver it a shot (v 2.2.1) and it works A-OK for me.

Having some temperature issues again..

I had VMWare fusion running for a little while and when I quit, my temps didn't drop. It's been about 30-40 minutes and the cpu is still sitting at 65C. Activity monitor doesn't show anything using the cpu, so I'm not sure what's going on. This happened once before two days ago, but I can't remember if I had been using fusion.

Anyone with VMWare fusion seen this?

were you simply using VMWare or were you doing like the initial setup? when i was doing the initial setup for Parallels, my computer got crazy hot. the AC adapter was the hottest it had ever been and it actually stopped charging my computer. not sure if its the same issue, but yea
