I doubt Apple really is going to check for a 10.5 install on your hard disk if you're using the Upgrade/Up-to-date discs.

actually how come it says you need the box if you have tiger? is that only if you want to be able to upgrade? surely the $29 disc should be able to do a clean install from tiger, or anything, unless it really is only an upgrade?

Isn't that the version they want you to pay more for if you don't have Leopard? Thought they'd check or something...
Edit: Does family version come with 5 discs?

the 29$ is to go from Leopard to SL, the $10 is the one you need to be eligible for if you bought your computer after June 8, and the 169$ is the one you need if you have Tiger i believe. I think Apple assumes you know what to buy and lets you figure out if you should buy the 29 or 169

Mine says shipping in September. :(

The Up-to-Date version, right? I spoke with someone at Apple's customer service (1-800-MY-APPLE). They said that they're just waiting for the systems to update. Tons of orders going through now. She assured me that the Up-to-Date versions will ship alongside the other Snow Leopard versions (8/28)

maybe they just want you to pay more? didnt people say there most likely will be a hack to allow the regular 29$ discs to upgrade from Tiger?

those Up-to-date discs will be the same as the 29$ ones right?

But then if you had Tiger couldn't you just format and use the $29 one?

I'm just too used to software companies trying to screw me over. My experience with iTunes activations doesn't help =[

Might not be. I'm assuming they'll be like the discs you get with a new Mac--you can only use them on your Macintosh model.

is the tiger box thing so that you can upgrade to leopard, then upgrade that to SL? makes sense, sort of, except they ought to tell you that there is the option of just erasing first.

i suppose they dont want to confuse people though and dont trust them to be able to format in disk utility (which is probably a fair assumption).

EDIT: actually this is probably wrong, ignore me :lol

Awesome, thanks Liu Kang. I just have one more question though. If I close Safari and open it back up again, will it load the previous pages I was viewing (much like Camino)?

Because this is the only thing holding me toward Camino now.

get glims if you want that kind of functionality in safari

http://www.machangout.com/

it's like saft (if you're familiar with that at all) except it's free and better. they're pretty on the ball with updates.

I want to update first day, but I'm also scared it will break things.

I'm guessing SL has been out there for a while, so developers know what it's all about, but how long does it take for things like Fink package indexes and stuff to start getting 10.6 support? Is it needed? What is the process for installing Rosetta (I have one stubborn app that is still PPC -> the software for my Spyder 2.2 display profiler.).

What about Xcode?

£129 for the boxset man thats expensive. Grrr why are they forcing me to buy ilife and iwork.

Any chance that they will sell Snow Leopard by itself for a lower price later on

They aren't forcing you to do anything.

Snow Leopard: £25/$30 for Snow Leopard it's self. All else is extra (presuming you have Leopard already)

Other stores will have this day of right? No Apple store here in Alaska, and if I go to order now via Apple online, it says it will deliver on the 28th but I know it won't :| My Mini was supposed to be delivered on one date and showed up 3 days later

Apple doesn't bother with serial numbers since they got your money from the hardware purchase (well, not yours, Firestorm, but you get the idea)

Wow thanks!

glims will stop working in Snow Leopard. not sure how the devs will get it to work again, tbh.

it's an input manager hack and Apple has disabled all input managers for 64 bit apps. Safari in SL is 64 bit.

panda21

i think you can get them back by forcing 32bits mode in the get info finder menu for the app, but thats not really ideal.

this! i totally forgot to mention that it will no longer work in SL, which is a pretty big oversight, lol.

I couldn't use a Leopard iMac restore disc on a Macbook.
Yeah, there was a Leopard upgrade disc that came with Macs (which would come with Tiger installed, and with Tiger, in my case iMac, restore discs) when the OS came out, though. It works on anything and you can even trick it into letting you do a fresh install without installing Tiger first. It also didn't have any of the iLife applications on it.

hmmm

is it really that inputmanagers are completely disabled in 64bit apps, or just that glims/simbl are compiled as 32bit binaries, so naturally you can't load it into an app running as a 64 bit process, which is why it works when you force it to run 32bit?

The Leopard one isn't model specific.
You mean Snow Leopard? Leopard was. My cousin's restore discs were scratched to hell so I tried to use the one my brother's Macbook Pro got and it wouldn't work. Although that might also be because the Macbook's restore disc was 10.5.0 while the Macbook Pro's was 10.5.6.

It's not a restore disc; it's the equivalent of the up-to-date disc. Here's a photo of mine, excuse the quality:

Apple has been installing their hardware off disks since the inception of OSX.

My Feb '08 MBP's video capabilities sucked so I went to the Apple Store and bought the GPU Drop-In DVD to upgrade to the new 9400/9600 combo card system the unibodies use.

Totally worth the upgrade.

I guess worst case scenario is that we'll have to manually c/p out of the application :(

SIMBL works if you run Safari in 32-bit mode.

wow sounds like they really did block 64bit input managers. but i think 1password have a workaround anyway so safari can still run 64bit.

i never liked glims anyway because it does slightly shady things like messing with your URLs when you buy stuff on amazon to give them referrer money.

1Password 3

When it is officially released (soon-ish-y), 1Password 3 will be fully compatible with and supported on both Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and 10.5 Leopard. 1Password 3 will not support 10.4 Tiger.

The 1Password 3 beta is currently working on Snow Leopard; we have a lot of beta testers on Snow Leopard and we have been doing development exclusively on it for months now. With that said, remember that the final Snow Leopard release may be different then what we're testing, so don't be surprised if the final release causes turbulence.

Fortunately, private beta testing of 1Password 3 is winding down, so we are slowly starting to open up testing to more people. Snow Leopard users need 1Password 3 the most, so those using 1Password 2 on Snow Leopard will be asked if they would like to beta test 1Password 3. Beta testing for Leopard users will be available shortly.

To recap, 1Password 3 is still in beta so there may still be quirks or a few unpolished buttons, so please let us know if you run into problems. If testing and reporting issues is not your idea of fun, you should wait for the final 1Password 3 release. For those testing, be sure to report issues in the 1Password Early Access forum as everything is still under NDA.

booyah! It's safe!!

From what I've heard, SL Safari doesn't crash with animated GIFs, but still run at half-speed.

Fantastic news if true.

Enh, not that fantastic. I like Safari so I'll give it a test drive, but it's disappointing if they still haven't fully sorted that out. The gif thing has chased me back to Firefox recently. Too much time on gif intensive sites made it not worth the tradeoff.

30 dollars to double my Finder browsing speed (which I do alot of), giving me 7 gigs back

The footprint is 7 gigs smaller? Seriously? Now that is fantastic. I was going to wait until I upgraded my hard drive next month (I'm down to like 1 GB of space, Logic Studio is humongous), but if it's actually smaller I'll just take the plunge this week.

Yep. The word is 6-8 gigs. I almost wish SL had built-in PPC code removal from UBs, but I'll take what I can get.

Leopard is a full OS version update, Snow Leopard is really mostly just an under the hood refinement of Leopard, that's why.

You can probably just use XSlimmer. It removes the PPC code (and other languages) from UB apps. Been using it since 2006

Key word was automatic. :p

I mean SL knows for sure that you're running Intel, so it makes sense. Ah well.

That would be nice but, knowing Apple, that'll probably be one of the selling points of 10.7 :lol

Awesome! Glad that you got that straightened out. From what I've seen of SL (a friend of mine from college is a paying Apple Developer Connection member) it's gonna be a speed demon :D I'm getting pumped :D

you guys highly recommend 1password? recommend it over say, password wallet? i've been using PW since like 2001 and it hasn't done me wrong (loved that i could sync it with my palm ever since back in the day and now with iphone) and while i'm loyal to a good product if there are enough features to garner a switch i'd check it out upon a good recommendation.

Have never used PW, but 1password has been working quite nicely for me.

Having the iPhone app for me is nice so that way I can c/p the redonkulous passwords that it creates for me without having to know them.

If PW is doing everything you want it to, I wouldn't switch, though.

I know how you feel. I love the Safari interface but I've been so tempted to switch to FireFox every time I visit GAF. The last time I had to force quit Safari due to animated GIFs I wrote an angry five paragraph diatribe in the Apple Crash Reporter to let the Safari team know that their lack of animated GIF support is embarrassing.

I do this from time to time. :lol

Sometimes it's a simple "The lack of support for animated GIFs is unacceptable."

Other times I go into longer tirades, but I gotta keep fightin' the fight!

I can vaguely remember people posting in the other SL thread that the GIF issue was fixed in the developer seeds so ill be really annoyed if its not.

I was hoping this would be the end of the "Random pictures that make your browser die a slow death for no apparent reason" thread

Sweet, just placed my order.

I have a late 2006 iMac (last plastic model) with a 2.16 GHz C2D and 2 GB RAM. Unfortunately, the most RAM my model supports is 3 GB. Anyone know if the extra gig would be useful in SL?

LOL, I have that same iMac, and I ordered a 2 gig stick of Kingston off Newegg just today. This is pretty much the last hurrah for the old girl. Applecare runs out for me early next year, and when 10.7 drops, it's new iMac time.
