I didn't even think of starting an official thread for this. My days at GAF must be numbered.

Looking forward to figuring out a way to obtain and install Snow Leopard on my family's 7 Macs before, during, and after my brother's wedding this weekend.

...

I should just go ahead and check myself in now.

*ahem* Phoenix != Flying_Phoenix

Phoenix is awesome.

Only thought about making this "official" thread because I'm stuck sick at home. Got nothing else to do. It was either this or go back to playing WoW. I chose GAF :lol Same amount of time sinking but, for free :lol

Hrm, maybe get 2 Family Packs? With that, you can (morally-speaking) install it on up to 10 computers

Just ordered one for a friend as a birthday present. Does anyone know if Snow Leopard will be in stores on the 28th?

I'd imagine. I called the 5th Ave Apple Store and they said they'll know for sure Wednesday. Then again I asked if they'll be selling it Thursday at midnight, so we'll see.

Damn, I'm debating to go to my local Apple Store just for the free T-Shirt :lol I mean, it's a 5 minute drive from my house but, I already have my Up-to-Date version ordered. Dammit. I guess I'm partly an Apple Fanboy :lol Don't hate me for being a somewhat Apple Fanboy. I've got Windows 7 Professional running in VMware as I type this (kinda actually like it). Thank you college's MSDNAA :D

Not sure if they'll have one this time though. Probably should call your local Apple Store & ask. When Leopard was released, each store had x amount of T-Shirts to give away (still have mine :D ) Generally has the Mac OS X logo & the same design that's on the Box/CD.

That's what I'm thinking. A white T-Shirt with the Snow Leopard design on the front :D

I already had ordered Leopard online, but I went to the store and waiting online just for the t-shirt :) It was worth it, good times just talking to people. Lots of people walking by expected another iPhone though

:lol, at first I didn't understand what you were talking about, then I remembered that I used a hack to modify my install's theme and iTunes-ify all the Aqua scrollbars and buttons on my install.

The problem is, none of the hacks work anymore, since the frameworks are different in SL. That means I have to put up with the ugly-as-sin scrollbars until new hacks are developed. I just find it inexcusable that they've left these stone-age remnants from 10.0. Its like they dont give a shit about the asthetics of the desktop OS anymore. Not that those scrollbars wouldnt have taken them 5 minutes to replace. Sorry, Im just completely dumbfounded, and yes, I know theyre just scrollars, and to many I must seem insane. I wouldnt give a shit about scrollbars either, if they werent so fucking ugly, and if it wasnt something many have been complaining about for the last couple OS releases. It just screams laziness. Say what you will about Microsoft (and I say alot), but at least theyve overhauled their OS visually since XP in Vista, and even further in 7. Apple has hardly changed the core look, except to add snazzy effects here and there, mixed in with the legacy elements, leading to a cluttered mess.

Did I say anything out of line? Aqua is gross, I was just IMing a friend/GAFer saying the same thing when it was posted that the iLife bar hack doesn't work in SL. I'm not looking forward to it at all.

But, like I said, he's posted back to back lengthy diatribes on it. All I said is relax.

I need a new internal HD for my Macbook. I only have 10 gigs lefts. 180 gigs goes by real fast. I would get SL day one, but I need to get a new HD first. Decision, decisions.

Do what I did, backup your mac using Time Machine, follow an ifixit.com guide to replace your HDD with a new one (I got a 320gig 7200rpm drive for cheap), pop in your Leopard disc to restore from the backup, then sit on your hands until Snow Leopard arrives!

Apple would have had no UI changes in Snow Leopard by design. Changing Aqua wouldn't be a 5 minute hack job, it would involve a whole lot of work and then a whole lot of testing.

Besides, if they did sort out Aqua, then people would be moaning about why they didn't do this, or why they didn't do that. They made it clear that SL is a core technology upgrade. 10.7 will most likely address design issues. I'm not trying to defend the decision, but I can understand why it was made.

I heard SL gives you space back! (In Soviet Russia).

Yeah, I always wondered why they kept those neon blue candycane scrollbars after every other part of the interface was pretty much replaced. The iTunes bars look wonderful, but these geniuses of design don't care about such an obvious oversight, just making those the default? Weird.

So when is the next Macbook Pro line upgrade due? December 2009?
I'd like a snappy new Mac, but I'd rather wait a few months more if it means more bang for my buck.

So, how do I figure if I can gain a bundle from increasing my RAM?

Right now I have the white flat iMac, with 2 gigs, 20", last time I checked I think I could upgrade to 4. But I don't really know if I need it.
I can try looking at the Activity Monitor or iStat Pro but I have barely any idea what all the numbers mean.

i'm with this guy. it looks ridiculously out of place because they have depth and specular highlights, while everything else in the UI has been changed to look flat with a gradient. the finder looks great, except for the 'glass' effect scroll bars and x_+ at the top that are left over from the old brushed metal style.

and btw if you havent seen the new dock menus yet you're going to explode... :lol who needs more consistency when you can have even less! 10.7 will have like a different style dock menu for each app or something.

Well according to this, the MacBook Pro line was recently upgraded (in June), so we probably won't see another upgrade until some time in 2010.

There will be some form of an update in the second half of September. Plus Apple will refresh their iPod range.

Edit: and I also pre-ordered the cheapo snowy leopard ugly box from Amazon. I hope they deliver this kind of item to inland Europe.

There's an Apple event in a couple of weeks, so hold out for that just in case. I doubt there will be new notebooks, but you can never be sure. No-one was expecting them at WWDC either.

They won't necessarily have "new" laptops but it will probably get another speed bump like they do during the year.

do you have another computer in the house? windows or Mac? use the remote install option over the network. there's software to enable disc sharing.

if you don't have another computer in the house then, yeah, DVD accessory.

1. get disc
2. use as coaster
3. download SL off the interweb (aye matey!)
4. transfer dmg to 8gb USB drive
5. install
6. make festive face mask out of SL box

Just put my order down for OS X 10.6! Did a clean install of Tiger last night (to get my iLife back) and then upgraded to Leopard to be ready for Snow Leopard!

I got one of those superdrive thingies when I bought my Air. I figured, even though I hardly ever use disc media, there will be times when I need it. Such as ripping a new album to iTunes.

UI is core technology. And the earlier rumors were that 10.6 would address the design issues and now, with no word from Apple, the apologists are already saying it'll be fixed next time. *shrug* Slurpy is right, this has been going on way too long. at least they didn't dump a translucent menu bar on us this time.

So the $29 version is an 'Upgrade Disc' ?

So if you have a blank HDD, would this disc refuse to install or would you have to validate with your Leopard disc, or can it only be used to upgrade an existing copy of Leopard ?
giga said:
Had a chat with an Apple Rep and she said that if you have a hard drive with no OS, you'll probably need to install 10.5 first before you can install 10.6 with the upgrade discs. Damn, let's see if it's the same for the up-to-date discs.
Can anyone confirm that SL won't install on a blank HDD? I just bought a new 500GB HDD. It'll get here tomorrow, so I'd like to know if I need to go ahead and put Leopard on it in anticipation for SL, or if I can just hold off until I get SL.

If you have Leopard to put on it, you might as well. It's a pretty quick install.
I wouldn't be surprised if people figure out how to fresh install with it, though. On the disc I was talking about earlier, you could tell it you wanted to Time Machine restore, hit cancel, then it would let you.

I was able to install onto a blank HDD from within 10.5.8

WHO DEY!?
Please no more discussion or asking this question: you can absolutely do an install on a blank hdd with the upgrade disc. There is nothing to figure out. LKbap answered this pages ago.

If MondoMouse is not working on SL, I seriously have to consider not upgrading. That thing is way too useful, considering that OSX doesn't let you scale windows from any side like you can do in Windows.

What do you mean scale windows from any size? You just just use the resizing arrows like windows...

It's just my 2 cents but I would think that that is a big enough deal where it wouldn't get done until a full revision.
