Holy crap at the Ars Technica review! I read all 23 pages. This guy knows his stuff and nobody else has mentioned just how much more there is going on under the surface. Puts other reviews to shame!

Safari 4 seems to be much faster than FF3.5 now. If it weren't for noscript and ABP, I might consider switching.
Fuck Adblock Plus, use Glimmer Blocker + Safari.

So yeah called Apple today and they said that my "Snow Leopard" order just shipped today.

In other news it turns out that I'm saying "fuck it" to Windows in general. I was trying to install XP Home Edition SP2 (via Bootcamp) but its just wasn't working out, and really don't see too much of a need for it. I'm just about to cancel my pre-order of Windows 7.

The GrApple Tangy theme is the one I found closest to Safari. (well, 3.0) quite nice.

yeah, I like the auto text correction stuff too much in safari to leave it but Firefox isn’t quite as shitty a Mac citizen as it once was :)

It’s startup time is still horrible, though
Sadly the Grapple themes don't play nice with my custom CSS for the UI I made. I'd have to play around with it to make it look right again. I like the buttons really since it makes better use of the space. My only problem is I don't know how to make the icons show up since the theme hides them. I hate that. I use the icons to tell what tab is what. I assume CSS could bring it back. But I don't know the structure of the XUL.

The Favicons in the tab bar?

I don't remember which specific line did the trick for me, but I'm sure you can figure it out. Here's my userChrome.css:

On the one hand yes, on the other hand he spends 20 pages talking about things most people don't know anything about, and don't care about.

Not that I'm complaining. I've always loved and been intrigued by what SL means for developers and, in the end, end user experience.

Thoroughly enjoying the Ars review. In several ways, it makes 10.6 seem like a much bigger release than 10.4/10.5 due to all the under hood transitions Apple has done. (or is continuing to do)

This is what I was thinking after reading some of that review. It is the whole "300 new features" approach, just to the developers.

After going through BootCamp and installing Windows:

Windows gets done installing than restarts. Than a black screen comes on and gray words say "Press any Key to Boot From CD" I press any key after putting in the CD than I get "Press any key to restart" then it freezes.

When I start if off with the CD in there it just reinstalls from square one.

I was thinking of how to fix it then I was like fuck it.

Yeah, the ones in the Tabs. I'm sure it's just a matter of overriding the code in the style that hides them in the first place. I'll look over your code and see if I can get them to show up. Because I like the Safari themes, just hate not having icons.

Boo! I want to upgrade, but my printer isn't supported by 10.6 and Samsung hasn't released the new driver yet. Grrr. Anyone else stuck waiting?

I'm stuck waiting for new scanner drivers. It's weird, the only time I have ever scanned slides (I don't expect many people to even know what these are) and now I can't finish them. Image Capture works with the scanner, but it can't automatically scan x4 35mm slides in one go and automatically save them out as jpegs. The scanner software was brilliant in this regard.

Canon did reply to my email almost immediately and say "2 to 3 weeks" though.

Hit the hotkeys. And if your mouse has many buttons, binding a couple to Exposé is pure workflow heaven.

how do I know if im even using snow leopard or not?

Top right, the Apple symbol, then About This Mac.

Or you can right click an item in the dock. If the menus are white, Leopard, if they're dark, Snow Leopard.

I was looking through some old folders and I found some screenshots of Sherlock. Man, that application is soooo ollld lol

did you try having the leopard dvd in and not the windows? i cant remember which one. i do know there shouldnt be an issue though, it really wasnt difficult to install

is there any way to override Safari's default of downloading to a single folder?

i like how firefox asks where to save particular files, i don't liek them going to the same one every time.

So been running SL for a few weeks now, and its probably the most polished and stable x.0 release Ive ever used. It seems more stable than 10.5.8, which is amazing in itself. Its also eliminated 90% of my major annoyances with Leopard, which is impressive. Still noticing small changes/tweaks/animations everyday.

Ashhong said:
your issue definitely seems like a bug. i say this because the white font inside of it is also messed up, so you know its not just a label issue. is it ONLY the firefox icon that has this problem? or is it all blue that looks purple?

All the highlight color tunerd purple, not just the Firefox icon...

I just had a weird hang. Safari became unresponsive, so I killed it. After that, I tried to restart my computer, but every time I did, it would simply close one open app and stop. Every instance of trying to restart would simply close an app. Until there were no more left, and it closed the finder, but still didn't shut down, so I was left with no menu bar and just the dock.

Luckily, clicking on the finder int eh dock booted the menubar again and I was able to finally restart.

Right click, "Download Linked File As…"

After having my MBP for a couple months i don't think i ever even saw the beach-ball in leopard but snow it pops up at random times, scrolling in Firefox/iphoto and videos keep locking up. I think this started with the EFI firmware upgrade i'd get a pause every 1/2 hr or so but the last video i tried was doing crazy jumping at one point then was fine for the rest of the time. I suppose that's something to do with the drivers like Mr.Wonderful mentioned.

Although i've only just done a restart since installing so i'll see if that helps any now.

Back in my day, Sherlock was for searching files on the computer.

Then they made it search the internet instead.

Then they finally killed the useless bastard.

With the rising popularity of web browsers and sites like Google Maps, Amazon, Wikipedia, etc, Sherlock became a useless tool that duplicated the stuff you could do in your browser anyway.

I liked it better when it searched files on the computer.

But now we have the superior and indispensable Spotlight. Don't know how I ever got along without it.... until I am forced to use a Windows machine for a few minutes. Then it all comes rushing back to me.

Spotlight is fast enough these days I sometimes use it as an app launcher like many other people do. I have DragThing, and I have my Applications folder in the Dock, but the third option of Command+Space then type the first couple letters is just heaven.

Just noticed an interesting new problem - Skype no longer recognizes my iSight video camera since installing Snow Leopard. I know the camera still works because I tested it in Photo Booth but when I start up Skype it says "no video camera connected." Anyone else have this problem?

EDIT: Re-installing Skype fixed the problem.

Seriously, I think one of the biggest moments of making something awesome and then screwing it up that Apple has done in recent memory was making that style of search results and then killing them. I understand why the way those results were given to the user was broken, but fine - build that shit into the Finder. Search results now are nowhere near as useful or organized as they were in 10.4.

yeah, I liked that mystery meat window. it was different, yes, but useful. if only they had kept it along for 10.5 and 10.6 with the blazing spotlight speed increases we got.

I wouldn't fret about it. Aside from the expose and dock changes, it's going to be a bit before we see the areas in which OS X was really tightened up.

But oh man those dock changes rock.

Well, the problem in 10.4 was that the Spotlight results window... kind of didn't officially exist. It wasn't an app, it wasn't a window owned by any app, it just sort of was there once open. You could, at times, completely lose the window and not be able to find it again since it had no owner.

But, it would be a super-simple fix; have it work the way it works now (as part of the Finder) but give the detailed search results that it gave. And, hell, at the same time, build that interface into the Finder period. The ability to use those filters and separations on the fly in any folder I'm in in the Finder would be so, so nice.

I really liked that. Spotlight in the finder in 10.5 was considerably less useful.

Fortunately, just using spotlight int eh menubar is sufficient for 95% of searches. I only wish there were a "right-click -> Go to folder".

I should buy a Canon printer.

10.5 didn't even support my HP one. It's a 1020. Instead I have to use hacked 1022 drivers that work fine. I hope that still works in 10.6.

you know about the CMD-click to open in the folder, right? I assume you'd just prefer to not have to use the keyboard and mouse for that functionality.

Running my 1020 in Snow Leopard now. When you get it set up, follow these instructions:

http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/INSTALL.osx

It takes a bit of effort to work, and is not as seamless as in 10.5. But I paid 70 dollars for the thing, and I still haven't run out of toner so I am fine with the added difficulty. I am looking to replace this one with a color laser printer once the ink runs out.

Hmm. I'm all kinds of retarded, but I guess it goes to shows there's something new to learn about OSX every day :loll (<-also funny how auto correcting makes it loll).

I often just want to know the path - and I did at least know highlighting the file eventually pops up a path, but I hated waiting for that. Thanks!

Bam! There ya go! :lol

I gotta admit, i was hesitant to bring that up.

Nah, no one should be shy about asking for stuff like that. It's why I like to peruse these threads to begin with. So many neat little things to discover, and these threads is where I find everything.

To be honest, I don't no why I never tried that, I just assumed it if was missing in a contextual menu, it didn't exist.

agreed. I think the general spotlight search is unusable now. too many results, even after I spend time limiting them

Okay, these wifi problems I'm having are driving me nuts. Think I can archive and install back down to Leopard?

yeah, you can do an archive and install with 10.5. but you won’t have the option to preserve user folder and network settings so you’ll have to restore that manually from the rev system folder.

there are instructions at the apple support site to do that properly.
