Jets have put an offer in to Cromartie. Now the waiting the game...

I still think they are going to give him 10Mil a yr.

I'm not sold on Cromartie yet. He can be good, but he is so damn soft. Also last year he played for a big pay day. Will he be as good as he was last year?

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Quick hits from Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio’s news conference with reporters:

Marcus Cannon update.
“I think he’s still kind of going through his process. He looks great. He’s done everything he’s been asked to do to this point. I think we’re all optimistic. I don’t think we’re going to rush into anything. I think we’re going to kind of let that timetable run its course. He’s here. He’ll be here. I think there are a few more steps along the way that he’ll have to take care of. Marcus has been great, he’s doing great, he’s in good spirits. We’re optimistic. … The most important thing is for him to be healthy. Whenever we get to that point, when he’s ready to go, then we’ll begin working with him. It’s good to have him here, it’s good to have him around the team. He’s moving in the right direction. Things look promising to this point, but I don’t want to jump ahead too far.”

Good news on Cannon so far.

Newbie question alert:

Hi guys, I started to follow NFL last season & I can't wait for the 2011 Season to finally start!
In the UK it's pretty had to keep up to date with weekly games so I was wondering if in the States there's a weekly round-up show with highlights from every game?
I would have to download it via torrent as there isn;t anything shown on british TV.
Any help would be great!

Easiest thing to do is go to www.NFL.com/videos on Mondays. They will have highlights to all the games on the website, plus further analyst type shows throughout the week.

It is a good signing but why not bring back Edwards? Cancer in the locker room?

Plax staying in NYC will create a great media circus.

Lombardi on Twitter indicated Braylon is asking for way more than he can reasonably expect. With signings coming fast and furious, can't wait for him to figure that out

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage

I doubt the Lions will get Barnett with signing Tulloch, now. Not that we'd need him, since we already had Levy and now Durant. And he seemed interested in quite a few teams.

Unless we sign Barnett and trade him for Asante.

Hmm.

Good thing Levy is such a trooper and will play any LB position.

Barnett canceled his trip to Detroit, for obvious reasons. Probably ends up in Chicago or Buffalo.

If they trade for Asante I would do backflips.

Said Bengals coach Marvin Lewis of CB Nate Clements, “He wanted to make sure he wasn’t — as he termed it — going to play some place that was rebuilding. He wanted to be a piece that could push everything over the top.”

I would LOVE for a real #2 after Dre here. All our picks are signed except one, first rounder JJ Watts. I have this feeling about Harris from the U though. Guy has been working out woth Dre the past two years and I think that may give him an adavantage.

At that price Tulloch was a steal. MM have done a good job this FA. Address the needs without Going into killer contracts

BAAAALLLINNN'
Lance linked to this Eagles article on the blueprint for this offseason: http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/eagles/20110731_How_the_Eagles_were_able_to_get_Asomugha.html

Terrific read.

When Joe Banner reflected on signing Nnamdi Asomugha, he thought back to another big deal he made a decade ago.

In 2000, back in old Veterans Stadium, Banner waited for Jon Runyan.

The tackle had arrived in Philadelphia to sign with the Eagles in one of the first major deals of the Andy Reid era. Banner's phone rang, and his heart sank: Runyan's agent, Ben Dogra, had an emergency.

He told the Eagles to put Runyan in a private room and get him on the phone. Runyan's team, the Tennessee Titans, had upped their offer. They were ready to give him more money than the Eagles would match.

Banner could feel the key addition slipping away.

But Dogra saved the deal.

"We gave our word, we're keeping our word," the agent said, according to Banner. "From that experience, I had a strong trust in Ben."

That trust and longtime relationship would prove critical to the Eagles' stunning signing Friday of another Dogra client, Asomugha, as the team hijacked the top prize in free agency while everyone was looking the other way.

........................

Dogra, Banner said, helped keep the Eagles' involvement quiet. He even left some of his top aides in the dark.

But the numbers still didn't match up on Thursday. Shortly after midnight Friday morning, Roseman texted Dogra to let him know: Thanks for your consideration, but we can't do it.

At the same moment, Dogra was texting back: I'd really like to make this work. The agent took the simultaneous messaging as a sign, and called Roseman to revive the deal.

"It was hard for us to put everything together with the plan we had with obviously the money that [Asomugha] was going to get," Roseman said. "His commitment to come to Philadelphia was really something that showed through."

Roseman got Reid and Banner on the phone. They woke up Lurie. The chase was back on.

Big deal

For Lurie, the rest of Friday was torturous. He knew the Eagles were involved, but he also saw reports that the Jets and Cowboys were strong contenders. From his Main Line home, he kept one eye on his television and another on his iPad, scouring websites for any news. There he was: watching and reading.

Finally, around 3 p.m., Roseman called. From his dorm room, he had made the deal.

Key points.

So no one else really even had a shot at that price range.

I feel this is relevant.

Our D line's starting four ages are: 25, 24, 23, 32

Our linebacker's ages are: 24, 25, 26

Got dang we've got a fairly young front seven.

I think it would be humorous if James Jones is forced to sign for essentially league minimum. What a shitty week for that guy.

He's going to end up back on the Packers. Buckethead and Arod will be pleased.

Meh. At this point it's worth it cause he's not going to be getting much

Texans were smart to back down and get a starting CB and Safety for the same price and now Rex has to overpay Cromartie. A-W-E-S-O-M-E AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!

Absolutely. I would be THRILLED to get him, I just wonder if their cap situation at this point would allow for it.

i can guarantee you the total value of cros contract is nowhere near joseph's.

it will be more per year, but less years.

Oh, absolutely. The way the signing period has worked out, I'll be happy with Jones resigning. It's not like I don't think he is fantastic, I just don't think he is worth a huge contract. Now that the huge contract is incredibly unlikely and there is no guys left to bring back, may as well sign him as an insurance piece.

Although....I don't really know that he has a place on this team. He isn't as reliable as Nelson, isn't as good a route runner as Driver, isn't in the same league as Jennings. Obviously they love Cobb so.....um, I don't know how useful Jones really is at this point.

Here's another plus, which I was thinking about earlier:
John Clayton

Give the Lions some credit. They predicted good players would be signing one-year deals by the weekend and they were right.

Detroit is committed to building the team through the draft and not ending up with dead money on the roster like Millen did. Short-term deals give the team the opportunity to extend the contract or let them go and look elsewhere.

Ill admit I didnt know much about Joseph but scouts love him, has tremendous upside and is still young. Cromartie is a "know what you get" guy. A secondary starting Joseph, Jackson/Harris, Manning and Quinn? All young and athletic in Wades attacking scheme?

Yes please.

He's definitely better than Cromartie.

Free agent C Olin Kreutz asked for $4.5M from the #Bears. They maxed their final proposal at $4M flat in a take it or leave it-type offer.

Bears FO really IS clueless. Arguing over 500K when your line is already terrible.

He has lost several steps, seems to always have nagging injury stuff, and is a little undersized, but he really seems to have a knack for positioning players as well as a very high football IQ.

I will miss him if the reports turn out to be true. This year just seems all over the place for the Seahawks I do like that we have gotten much younger, the team had so many holes after the Tim Ruskell era it will take a bit to get a honestly competitive team again. I wish we would have asked Trufant to take a cut before Tatupu as his play has taken a bigger dive, then again even with Marcus our cb situation is pretty horrid.

I wonder if they give the horribly over drafted Curry a shot at ml or go with Hawthorne who has filled in decently in the past.

The Seahawks have named TJack their starter this year. That trade for Whitehurst is not looking good in hindsight.

Hindsight? They gave up a third-round pick for a third-string QB. That was dumb at the time.

That sounds like something the Bengals would do. I am very surprised they would lose a guy that has been so good for them over 500k when they are so far under the cap.

The Detroit Lions will finish ahead of the Bears. Book it.

I don't know if I'd guarantee that yet. A couple key injuries and this team finishes 4-12.

This would have been a bold statement 2 years ago.

I think I said something like this last year and it would have proven true if the NFL didn't rob Calvin in the first game. Season plays out differently for both teams if the refs didnt fuck up.

Lions having injuries. IMPOSSIBLE!

37 minutes ago - by Larry Holder - Payton stops practice for a bit of levity
In a funny note, coach Sean Payton huddled up the team midway through Sunday's practice and presented the veteran free-agent signees who can't practice yet umbrella drinks to help with their "vacation." Saints RapidReports

Thats awesome.

Also I think it helped out lions when nnamdi sited with Philly. They were big after tulloch. We had no shot at nnamdi. Win- win for both

I think he will be as good this year. Don't think he will be better obviously. But there is no way Rex Ryan is going to allow any slouchers on his defense. If Cromartie tries to slack you better damn well believe Rex Ryan will order Bart Scott to do some serious hazing on him till he gets a clue.

Do I think he's worth 10Mil, Hell no! But at this point the Jets showed their cards with the Aso debacle and Cromartie is going to benefit from it.

Surprised he had no market.

A one year deal @ that price is risky for him, you're always one play away from injury.

Jets plan, according to source: By committing "only" $3mil for No. 2 WR pos, they have more to spend on No. 2 CB -- i.e. Cromartie.

Cromartie is going to have a hell of a pay day.

Boy, you take two days off and everything happens! Great to hear that the Colts signed Peyton to a reasonable deal and quickly got Addai back. Young, beefed up O line with all the other requisite parts in place, while dropping Hayden's massive contract...good stuff.
