Official NFL 2011 Offseason Thread of OUR LONG NATIONAL NIGHTMARE IS OVER

I know sabermetrics folks like to make predictions by looking at anomalous stats from the previous year and anticipating a return to the mean. Here's one that may or may not be troubling for the Packers: penalties.

From ESPN, the total number of team penalties & yards for Green Bay in the Mike McCarthy era:
(format is #penalties (league rank)--yds)
  • 2010: 78 (#5)--617
  • 2009: 118 (#32)--1017
  • 2008: 110 (#30)--984
  • 2007: 113 (#29)--1006
  • 2006: 90 (#13)--689

The Packers' penalty totals were in fact their lowest in something like 15 years last year. And that's skewed further by the 18-penalty mess in Chicago.

It'll be interesting to watch if their penalties are up this year. Hopefully the offense can take the parking brake off and compensate for any additional yards lost.

Some rumblings from Giants camp that the closing of the trade window could mean Osi is getting an extension of some type with the Giants. Very early rumors at best right now though...

I'm gonna miss Deon Grant, but TT at that third S position sounds epic. He's a great tackler and has excellent ball skills. The problem for me is that he's a good #2, so if Prince isn't up to par come week 1, who starts at #2 CB? I guess it's Aaron Ross, which I definitely do not mind, but moving TT is like asking a gold glove short stop to play third base.

....

....

:p

But is he being asked to move for one of the worst defensive short stops of all time?

Speaking of Mike Bell, what happened to him? He was pretty solid in the one year he played for the Saints.

He wasnt even that solid. 3.8 YPC with the Saints

Probably about the same if he got #22. Love West and will never forget the punt return before Miracle #2:

But you have to let it go. 2003 to 2010. See you in 2017 Gints fans.

Somebody tell me about that guard the Eagles picked up. Evan Mathis.

He liked to hit people. That's what I liked about him. He wasn't starting material but he was a solid roleplayer who moved the chains when asked.

His 1.8 YPC with us would say otherwise.

His limited success was because everyone was scared of Brees throwing it over the top of them. I believe that was the year he had 5000 yards passing?

If he ends up on a roster this year id be surprised.

Paper towel dispensers in the greater Seattle area had better watch out.

After losing Olindo Mare to Carolina, Seattle reached agreement today with former Steelers kicker Jeff Reed on a one-year deal.

Stupid Bucs.

Guaranteed contracts bring cost certainty, letting the major league club know what exactly it can spend on a midfielder

edit: Ninja Scooter is banned? What happened? Are we out of Redskins fans now?

Has the Bucs made any moves? I know they had alot of money to spend but havent heard any signings..My buddy is furious they didnt get Nhamdi

To be honest, I think they're just as good if not better. Not that sad to see Franklin, Lawson and especially Spikes go.

I have little to no hesitation with how Sopoaga will do at nose, and I still expect the run defense to be stifling, as that's Willis' and Smith's wheelhouse. McDonald, who will likely line up on the left in replace of Sopoaga, is the obvious weak side, but that's easily compensated with...

The replacements for Manny and Takeo. I think Brooks and Smith are going to handily replace Lawson and give Haralson a ride (though I think it's Haralson and Brooks opening day), and I have no issues with Bowman filling Spikes' role. It'll be a more classic version of the TLB.

The biggest difference will be the improved pass rush with Brooks and McDonald (and maybe even Smith) starting.

Yeah but your team puts even less emphasis on the rungame than mine does.

So glad football is back. There should be bans given out for mentioning baseball from now on.

Edit: Fewell is still using his 3 safety scheme that worked so well last year? LOL

I wish we played them again. This time it'd be 70-0
Uh what? 1) You should be thanking the Giants for showing the league how to stop Vick and the Eagles. 2) The only reason the game against GB turned out the way it did is that it's clear that after the previous week the Giants players didn't even care enough to play. If I was owner I wouldn't even pay anyone for that game.

Diehard fan failure not knowing your schedule, we play week 13...

Preseason hasnt even been played yet. I get some grace period. Been just looking at home games since Im planning a trip.

Looks like I'll go to that game too. Anyone in Giants GAF wants to take me down, that's your opportunity. You'll need someone to take your frustration out on.

I just hope Welli brings his laptop or something else. I can only take so much

As of Tuesday, 7 teams are over the cap:

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/08/03/as-of-tuesday-seven-teams-were-over-the-cap/

Per a source with knowledge of the cap numbers, here are the seven teams that were in the red: Raiders ($17.3 million), Steelers ($11.5 million), Texans ($8.5 million), Vikings ($5.6 million), Lions ($5 million), Cowboys ($3.7 million), and Panthers ($939,000).

Giants worked out DE Andre Carter, yesterday, according to two sources as well.

After watching that game, I think Giants fans had a similar feeling of what us Patriot fans felt like after 2007.
Not really. I still get a deep pain in the pit of my stomach at it. I feel downright sick just watching it. It hurt more because the Giants had totally dominated them for 52 minutes and suddenly checked out when it counted the most. In the end it cost us the entire season and a playoff spot (not that I think we would have made any noise in the playoffs anyway). Still, it is what it is - a regular season game - not some meaningful playoff game or Super Bowl loss.

Wat...

Franklin was overrated. Spikes cant cover. Lawson cant rush the passer. We needed a change. Ice will be fine at nt as we are playing 1 gap. Mcdonald has already proven to be a good pass rusher. Aldon smith cant possibly be worse than manlaw at blitzing the qb and bowman was a beast late last year.

Carlos rogers is also an upgrade over clements.

Ps. Malcom floyd may sign with us today!

Not to mention how horrible we've been against screen passes in general (although early indications have been that Smith is pretty bad in coverage so getting burned on screens is probably not going to stop anytime soon). What about Ricky Jean Francois? I'm surprised there's no mention of him filling in for Franklin..Last year there was quite a bit of talk about him taking over the NT...

I think they should guarantee all the first round rookie contracts. I'm glad they cut the price down but the players have crappy contracts compared to baseball and basketball. There has to be a middle ground. Not all guaranteed but some of them. Especially since football careers last the least amount of time.

Wow, looking at a site: D Jack is getting paid less than Avant, Maclin, Moss and Johhnie Lee Higgens? No. Stop. Seriously? GTFO

I watch the game about once ever month or two, so it doesn't bother me as much now. Like you said, the biggest problem is just how much they flat out dominated the game and then handed it over. It's moreso that the Giants lost that game than the Eagles won it. At the very least it makes me really optimistic going into this season.

And thats is why MLB and the NBA are in the mess they are in now.

That game features Joe Buck's best call ever.

I lose it every time I see Coughlin chewing out Dodge as Buck yells "No time left - Eagles win!" Gets me every time.

I agree, that's why I think there should be a in between. I hated how Chris Webber kept sucking up money from the Sixers for years. Every baseball team has guys who are getting paychecks but not playing. However, the managers/owners give them the contracts, so how can anybody fault the players? I don't know. I like the shift in income to NFL veterans and I think it's okay for 1st rounders to have a lot in guarantees.

With a cap on rookie wages the April draft will be more entertaining than it ever has been. 1sr round picks will be at a PREMIUM since owners will basically know what it will cost them. No more of the 80 million dollar contracts.

I still would prefer, even with the rookie cap, that these players show some service before they get any guarantees.

Yeah couldn't they give him something less worthy?

Of course I was still holding out hope they would bring him back. I am sure Westbrook can carry the ball 2 times a game. That is about how much Ronnie Brown will get the ball.

A source close to Osi Umenyiora predicts the disgruntled pass rusher may claim he's not healthy enough to practice after being denied a trade.
As we suspected, this saga isn't over yet. Though Umenyiora has yet to practice, coach Tom Coughlin confirmed it has nothing to do with the 29-year-old's offseason hip surgery. The Giants are expected to challenge Umenyiora if he sits out, and the NFLPA is "watching this mess closely" to ensure that there's no punishment.

The players never come ahead in the NFL once they go against their team.

Once you are labeled disgruntled it seems like all of the good teams blackball you and you are only left with the worst teams in the league or the Raiders as your option (and even then you won't get the money you wanted in the first place).

That throwing stick stunt of yours has boomeranged on us.

Penalties were miraculously low after that 1st Chicago game. Seemingly all the stupid penalties that have always plagued us just disappeared. False starts, defensive holding/PI, ridiculous special teams penalties. Not sure what happened and I do expect penalties to increase a bit this year but maybe McCarthy has finally figured that shit out.

Semi related...I wonder if refs will call the first few games a bit more leniently if play is sloppy and teams are out of sync.
