It's made a lot more effective by the fact that anyone who tries anything tricky like trying to walk through the middle of the offensive line can get a pressure or sack.

He was never going to have the year he had last year, but nor was he going to be this bad with adequate protection.

Roethlisberger was on the run for the majority of last year's season and arguably had his best season yet. I didn't watch all of last weeks game versus the Bills but sacks didn't seem to be all that big of a problem last week.

KC @ ATL- Both these teams suck...I just think Atlanta sucks less.
OAK @ BUF-I think Buffalo is a really good team...
TB @ CHI-Half of me wants to pick Chicago here (defense, special teams) but I refuse! Come on Griese!
CAR @ MIN-Steve Smith is going to dominate in this game
MIA @ NE-Efficient leading by Cassell will lead NE to 3-0
CIN @ NYG-Giants should destroy the Bengals here
HOU @ TEN-This one could go either way, but I'm going with Collins!
ARI @ WAS-Another toughie; now Arizona starts to face real competition
DET @ SF-Wow, what a shitty game :lol. Another hard one
STL @ SEA- However bad Seattle is playing right now....they are not worse than the Rams.
NO @ DEN- I think Denver wins their division this year, riding on the arm of Cutler, and the genitals of the officials
PITT @ PHI- Philly looked great last night (would have been if not for that damned fumble)--look for Philly to bounce back here
JAC @ IND-Man the Jags offense line is so bad right now...totally killing their chances
CLE @ BAL- Browns get their first win over a division opponent
DAL @ GB-I am not too optimistic about this game...but we shall see. Should be a close one (Favre isn't playing this time)!
NYJ @ SD- Chargers are fucking pissed. They are going to eat Favre alive and Kermit is gonna speak in tongues.

CIN @ NYG - Yawn. Must be nice to have such a cupcake schedule to start the season.

Glad you admitted your team is a cupcake :D

I think the biggest problem is that they can't run the ball. Even when you can't protect the qb, you can still score some points with play action if you can run the ball.

Ben was pretty effective in the last 2 years even without the greatest pass protection because the run game forced defenses to be honest.

What the Jags really need is a bye to regroup and figure out what they have at o-line.

Very true, but Ben also had a running game until Parker got hurt. Once Parker got hurt the Steelers offense started to suck because they couldn't give Ben the protection he needed.

You didn't see that any time it was listed as "Fred Taylor for no gain or Fred Taylor for 2 yards" it was because he had to break 3 or 4 tackles as he was hit immediately.:lol

The Steelers also forced the run, you can't simply give up after a dozen failed attempts and turn yourself into a one-dimensional team.

I hope Pittsburgh beats the shit out of the eagles, but i don't think that's going to happen.

I think Philly wins by a FG

Witten is such a warrior. He had a separated shoulder in the 1st half, took some painkillers at halftime, and then was good to go.

I think you're giving the running game to much credit, sure, Willie Parker had 1300 yards last season... but he also had ~340 rushing attempts. Running game or not, you've gotta keep your offense balanced. As for Roethlisberger, having a solid running didn't change the fact that he's been sacked over a 100 times in the last two seasons. A pretty significant portion of his plays were made with his athletic ability and his athletic ability only.

They actually did give up on the run once Parker went out because the other bums couldn't rush worth a damn.

Your hatred for the Jags is admirable, they didn't deserve to be the on the same field as the Messiah last year let alone beat him twice, but the truth is we won't know how good Garrard is for a few more weeks once the team is able to adjust to all of their injuries.

A GAF poster is saying that I don't give big Ben enough credit? :lol

Remember I gave him the nickname the Messiah and predicted after he beat Dallas as a rookie that he would lead the Steelers to their 5th SB.

The run game wasn't dominant, but it keeps a defense honest and gave Big Ben a chance to succeed. Right now the Jags are still reeling from their injuries and need to regroup. Only then will we see how good Garrard actually is or if he benefited from being on a monster team last year (i.e. V. Young effect).

KC @ ATL - This one is hard. KC has lost their last 10 games, and Atlanta sucks.

How dare a 49er fan say we suck especially when both teams have the same record. I wish we played you guys again this season. Then we will have another guaranteed win for this season.

Hey, I never said the niners don't suck.

Whew, did much better in my predictions last week. Except for the game closest to my heart... /sobs.

KC @ ATL
OAK @ BUF
TB @ CHI
CAR @ MIN
MIA @ NE
CIN @ NYG
HOU @ TEN
ARI @ WAS Tough pick, but someones got to represent NFCW while the Seahawks regroup
DET @ SF Gonna surprise some people this season if Martz and JTO keep dicing zones.
STL @ SEA The run back into the light starts here... again.
NO @ DEN
PITT @ PHI Hope they dislocate Bens shoulders for real this time
JAC @ IND first win at the Luke
CLE @ BAL
DAL @ GB
NYJ @ SD Angry team takes it out on the slinger

Home domination this week.

The NFC seems noticeably better than the AFC this year. :D

Which means the Seahawks have to win the division to get back to the playoffs and send Holmgren out right as the wildcard is going to be insane.

It could happen!

one day later and im still depressed.

there is no way we beat the steelers. reid historically has been terrible against good tough minded AFC teams.

our best bet is to be 2-2 by the bye week and then beat up on some of the bad teams.

Man, I think the Patriots will still have a really good season without our savior but Christians eventually had to move on after Jesus died so I suppose it is sort of like that. Oh yes, and then the 2nd coming that will be next year will be wondefully delightful.

Even left handed I don't know if a team has been invented that could beat the Steelers this year. Even a tropical depression could not slow down the Messiah's brilliant spirals. Unlike limp wristed Anderson, Big Ben just cut throw the wind like Moses and the Red Sea.

It is just one game. No shame in losing to a good team on the road. You didn't really expect them to go 16-0 did you?

The key is to beat up on the cream puffs. The San Franciscos, the St. Loius', the Seatles, the ... see a pattern here. ;)

Pretty much. That is what frustrates me most about last nights game. A divisional win on the road is HUGE. Even if they do by some chance beat the Steelers, it won't carry as much importance when it comes down to deciding who will make it to the playoffs at the end of the year.

Way to keep the faith brother. I will admit that since the fall of our Lord and Savior on the hill at Foxborough I have had my doubts. I forget that our Lord has given his ministry to St. Cassel who has been instructed to look after his Church until his inevitable return.

KC @ ATL - Ryan bounces back, I feel bad for KC fans. :(
OAK @ BUF - Raiders looked good against KC (lol) but the Bills are much better.
TB @ CHI - Griese explodes on his Ex team. BTW why is Garcia benched?
CAR @ MIN - I still think the Vikes have to wait for their first victory.
MIA @ NE - As much as I hate to do it...
CIN @ NYG - Palmer is going to be even more broken after this game.
HOU @ TEN - Chris Johnson, money.
ARI @ WAS - Please beat the Cards, please.
DET @ SF - Martz unloads on his former team, score 50-17 :lol
STL @ SEA - I've seen teams suck before, but they were the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked.
NO @ DEN - Denver to me has always been a darkhorse in the AFC, its Cutlers year.
PITT @ PHI - Ben rebounds from a bad game against the Browns. Game will be close though.
JAC @ IND - Garrad forgot what color his team wears now. Fred Taylor forgot what an Endzone is.
CLE @ BAL - Tough game to call, Anderson hasn't proved anything so far. Though Baltimore is coming off a bye...
DAL @ GB - Fuck Tony Romo
NYJ @ SD - As much as I don't like the Chargers, I don't like Brett Favre more.

But then a new force rode down from the sky on the wings of an Eagle and slew the Colossus of Hubris at the very gates of his previous atrocities. The great McNabb, a latter day David, imbued with the vengeance of years of neglect and propelled by the destiny of the long suffering citizens of brotherly love beat the living shit out of the Steelers.

Or something like that.

Indeed, and your team also needs to focus on the weaker parts of your schedule like the Bengals, the Ravens, the Browns... oh wait...

I will admit that the AFC North is pretty atrocious aside from the Steelers. And that is the way I like it. I would rather my team plays in a shit division (ala New England, Seattle) then having to slug it out 6 times a year with evenly matched teams (NFC East).

The last time the Steelers played the Eagles they were 8-0 and we clipped their wings in a 28-0 massacre. Of course that was in Pittsburgh, but McNabb didn't kill us then even with TO.

the entire AFC North is bad. 2 weeks into the season, the Steelers look like another overrated one and done team just like they were last year. They might manage to come away with the best record in the AFC and still get upset by some other team.

Wow, most people are picking Philly.

I kind of agree with Livewire that the Eagles probably want it more. Lose and they go to 1-2. And I am not sure if the Steelers have ever won in Philly.

Well, first time for everything. :D

Last Steelers win in the city of Philly dates back to the 60s. Exactly the kind of record Big Ben likes to shatter. Should be a good game.

By the way, here's news on Ben's shoulder and on NBC's amazing reporting:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/football/nfl/09/16/steelers.ap/index.html

The Steelers said last week that their quarterback was nursing a sore shoulder, but a TV commentator on Sunday night termed the injury a shoulder separation.

During his weekly news conference Tuesday, Tomlin appeared agitated by the latter description.

"I have no idea where that report came from," Tomlin said. "It didn't come from me or my medical staff. If anybody in here has got any information about where that report came from, send them to me."

Tomlin said Roethlisberger sprained his AC joint, an injury to the ligaments that attach the collarbone to the shoulder blade.

Asked if Roethlisberger was the source of the disputed information, Tomlin said, "Not to my knowledge."
.
.
.
"He said it feels better than it did a week ago, which is good," Tomlin said.

The Dark Lord won't come back 100% next year. It will take him until the year after that and by then you will have to be wondering if his best years (though worst for the rest of the NFL and humanity) will be behind him.

I want to laugh at Brady's misfortune, but I of all people shouldn't laugh because Big Ben takes so many big hits that sometimes I wonder if even a direct relative to God Almighty can have a long and productive career while taking that kind of beating week in and week out.

Your hatred is strong but not pure.

I can guarantee that the Steelers will be one of the elite teams by the end of the season if they can stay healthy. Watch how much better their offense looks in week 3 when they aren't playing in the leftovers of a hurricane.
