Millen could leave with $50 million

Now that the Detroit Lions have fired Matt Millen as president, an interesting detail surfaced about his regime.

It had been widely reported that Millen made $3 million per season during his first five-year contract and then got a bump to $5 million per season for his five-year extension. According to a source close to the situation, Millen's pay has been $5 million per season from the first year he was hired (2001). Millen has already pocketed more than $35 million in his first seven-plus years and is scheduled to make $50 million for the entire 10-year term.

Because he was fired, Millen is due the total sum of that money; he would've forfeited the rest of his salary if he had resigned. What isn't known is whether Millen and owner William Clay Ford came to some kind of buyout agreement for the final two-plus years of his contract.

Man, the Seahawks game is probably the only real challenge the Giants have in the entire first half of the season. Having to do it without Plax kind of sucks. But there are certainly enough guys to pick up the slack.

The offense this season still hasn't been quite on the level of what it was during the playoff run last year, though, and this certainly doesn't help things.

All gm's must be incredibly jealous of him. Guy did nothing but fail but ends up with more money then any current gm will probably ever see. Hell I am jealous too.

The bengals should seriously trade chad johnson and/or levi jones for (receiver) roy williams now that millen is gone.

instead, they'll probably hire some washed-up veterans to a big deal.

Isn't there a rule somewhere stating each team is only allowed one Roy Williams each?

there's an exception if only one of them can catch

anyone else think the lions job seems tailor made for Bill Cowher if they throw a bunch of money at him to coach/gm?

I like him as a coach, but he's never really been a GM before, I want someone more experienced than that there, we've seen what a lack of practical experience at the position can do.

Lions statement on Millen:

According to a team statement, owner William Clay Ford has announced today that Matt Millen "has been relieved of his duties as President and CEO effective immediately.''

Detroit Lions chief operating officer Tom Lewand will now report directly to Mr. Ford on all business, organizational and NFL matters. Martin Mayhew will assume the role of general manager and report directly to Mr. Ford on all football matters. Also, Cedric Saunders has been named the Vice President of Football Operations.

"I have relieved Matt Millen of his duties effective immediately,'' Ford said in the statement. "I bleieve that this decision is in the best interest of this organization. I appreciate Matt's efoorts. Matt worked tirelessly during his tenure to win, and he would be the first one to tell you that you have to win in this league. It just didn't work out.

"The support of our fans continues to be incredible and they deserve a winner. Every decision we make must focus on that goal, and I believe this decision today will allow this team to move forward in a positive manner.

"I am very disappointed with where we are as a team after our start this season. Our sole focus now is preparing for our next game against Chicago. The entire organization must work together and do whatever we can to make this a successful season. Despite our record, it is still early and there is time to turn this sesaon around.

"These decisions are for the duration of the 2008 season. Once the season is over, we will undergo a thorough and comprehensive evaluation of our entire football operation and put together a plan that we believe will transform this team into a winner.''

Sources are saying that Millen actually told the team to "keep their money."

Which is what he said he'd do about 5 years ago if this happened. Still, it's not like he's going to give back the 35 million+ he already took.

I love how JTO & Mad Mike were the ones to vanquish the Millen era into the firery abyss. Says everything that needs to be said about his Lions tenure that two guys who he fired earlier this year come back to snap the final straw.

TAMPA, Fla. -- The infant son of Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker Matt Bryant died Wednesday morning, coach Jon Gruden said.

Matthew Tryson Bryant apparently died in his sleep, Gruden said. The coach said he did not know any further details. The child was born June 16.

"We're shocked and very saddened by this," Gruden said.

Gruden said he was unsure if Bryant will play in Sunday's game against Green Bay, and that the situation would be addressed later in the week.

I am kind of happy so many people are picking Baltimore.

Makes me start to believe that the Steelers are going to bounce back in a big way on Monday Night.

EDIT: Sorry about the delay getting the prediction results posted. I had a baby last week so I've been pretty busy (the Eagles are undefeated when my son watches the game with me!). I will have the standings posted soon.

congrats on the baby!

raise him right...raise him a eagles fan!

Sucks about that Bucs kicker's kid too. Damn....

football is a violent game. you either live with the risk-reward (potential long term issues vs. earning more money in a year than a lot of people will earn in their lifetime) or don't play the game.

i feel bad for people like ted johnson but i also feel like he should have known the risk. doesn't mean i WANT him to have brain problems, but you honestly can't be surprised that getting hit by 330 pound guys isn't good for your physical or mental health.

I dont think he wants people to feel bad for him, or that he's saying that people shouldnt play football.

I took from the article that there are people that dont believe he is fucked up because of his concussions from playing football. And the article confirms it at the end with the line "there is still debate etc."

Re: Burress' suspension vs. Seattle

Eli says:

“It is what it is,” added Eli Manning. “Obviously the coaches and upper management had to make a decision. The players move on. We’ll be fine.”

Domenik Hixon, step on up!

Odd same deal for me (10-6, in the pickem confidence, and must not have posted in the thread). 7-11, 10-6, 12-4, currently 7th in the confidence one.

Seattle are tough in Seattle, but are a different away team.

Still, I wouldn't overlook them.

Rome is a douche either way.
