Last year's playoffs were also entertaining, but probably more for the fact that the games were dramatic. I still and will always hate playoff refereeing. Letting the action go starts off well, but it always ends up in blatant and disgusting rule-breaking in the latter stages of tight games.

I didn't really enjoy last year's playoffs aside fromt he Philly/Tampa series.

The worst series was the Sharks/Flames snooze-fest. Actually, all of the Flames playoff games were horrible to watch, but the people here in Calgary were too drunk to notice.

Whoa, hating the Flames is one thing, but anyone who thinks the Canucks/Flames was anything other than one of the most exciting 7 game series in decades is just crazy. Now I know not to bother arguing with you! :lol *fond memories of game 6, when a 4-0 Canucks lead was almost wasted single-handedly when bishoptl angered Hockey Jesus with his blasphemous christmas-tree photoshop*

The Sharks series was pretty dull, but the Wings was good too. Other than the game 5 blowout (which was still hilarious) the Leafs and Flyers was a pretty entertaining series too.

Senators exercise Hasek's option

OTTAWA (CP) - As expected, the Ottawa Senators are hanging on to Dominik Hasek.

General manager John Muckler announced Wednesday that the NHL team has exercised its one-year option on the 40-year-old goaltender. Hasek is due to make $2.28 million US this season.

Hasek did not play during the lockout, other than skating with the Binghamton Senators, Ottawa's AHL farm team, during training camp.

Ottawa signed the six-time Vezina Trophy winner in July 2004.

Honestly, Hasek at 50 couldn't be any worse then Lalime in crunch time. That game 7 debacle was one of the great playoff meltdowns in recent memory. And I like the guy too (like most of those Sens players actually, it's the dumb shit fans that I detest), so I really felt bad for him. Which isn't to say I didn't laugh out loud about it. :lol

The Leafs not playing the Wings and Hawks at all is baffling in one sense, though not new...but on the other I know they've always scheduled the Leafs to do that Western Canada swing, since it's the only time the Alberta buildings sell out. :lol Seriously though, I imagine that'll be the one analomy in the schedule that goes on for years. Otherwise the interconference games will get cycled evenly with the other clubs.

:lol Yeah, that'll probably be exactly how it goes. Except you forgot the part where he jets off to the Czech Republic in January for a few months to "rehab" at some special clinic (read: resort). Then the sens move on and fix their goalie problem, Prusek plays well so Hasek feels unloved and starts floating rumours about being 100% ready for the playoffs.

I don't know any Sens fans (I do know several mild enthusiasts of the team) but I'd like to think that none of them are happy about Hasek. Sure, the Ottawa media is dumb as a bag of pucks and practically handcuffed Lalime the whole season but I sure hope they realize Hasek is a mind-boggling mistake. God knows I was against it from the start. :lol

BOSTON -- The Boston Bruins are making a concerted effort to retain the core of their team.

The Bruins on Tuesday made contract offers to five of their free agents, including captain Joe Thornton and defenseman Sergei Gonchar.

Also receiving offers were restricted free agent left wings Sergei Samsonov and P.J. Axelsson and right wing Martin Lapointe, who is unrestricted. Teams exclusively can negotiate with their free agents through July 31.

"These players have made valuable contributions to our team," Bruins general manager Mike O'Connell said. "We hope these offers make clear to them how much we want them to be a part of building a championship team in Boston."

A restricted free agent, Thornton was offered a five-year contract. The 26-year-old made $5.5 million in 2003-04 and was awarded a one-year, $6.75 million deal after winning his arbitration case last summer. An All-Star each of the last three seasons, Thornton was selected first overall by the Bruins in 1997. He was named team captain prior to the 2002-03 season, a campaign in which he collected a career-high 101 points.

Gonchar, who is an unrestricted free agent, was given a four-year offer. Acquired from Washington in March 2004, the Russian blue-liner also won an arbitration case last summer, receiving a one-year, $5.5 million contract after making $3.65 million in 2003-04.

The 14th overall pick by the Capitals in 1992, Gonchar recorded a career-high 67 points in 2002-03, one season after netting 26 goals, also a career best. The 31-year-old has appeared in three All-Star Games.

Samsonov, Axelsson and Lapointe each received three-year contract offers.
