Just got done with a 5hr session. First off, the loading is nowhere near as big of a deal that most reviews made it out to be. So far though, the game is absolutely awesome. 1000 year dream sequences are very well written and extremely intriguing--I can't wait to unlock more(currently have 6). English VO is surprisingly well done, and the main characters I've come across so far are all pretty cool.

Beat the first major boss on my first try, surprised because I heard it was a bitch to beat. I just taught Kaim and Seth every available skill I had at that point. Although teaching the immortals skills is going to kill me because of my completest nature.

Anyway, I'm very happy with the game so far, and I can't wait to really get into over the weekend.

Im just happy that even though you can learn all the other mortals skills, you only can set a few, and certain characters have better inherent stats in some categories than others. So it kinda makes you assign classes. One thing I didnt like in Blue Dragon is that you could basically make everyone's stats the same if you wanted.

Also is it strange that I only have 2 dreams (the first one, and I think the fifth or sixth
its called Little Liar
) and I just arrived at the
Mountain Hut to take a break
? Dont really want to go by a guide yet (usually save that kinda stuff for endgame tying up of loose ends). So without spoiling anything, how'd I miss the dreams in between when I ran all over Uhra just to make sure I didnt miss any items?

Yeah definitely agree, although I'm going to teach each one every skill for the achievements.

Looks like you missed a bunch form the Tavern in Uhra. I think there are 3 you can get from there. You just need to run in and out after each one.

Oh well that explains it. Wait you mean the inn?

Nope the Tavern is on the left hand side of the street before the weapon shop and Inn.

Huh...lol cant believe I never noticed that. No wonder I missed so much. So much for me double checking, thanks.:lol

Can someone time the battle loading, from the second the purple stuff appears to when the first battle command menu appears? I believe the average was around 14 seconds for the Japanese release.

I wonder if it was actually optimized since the Japanese release? I though the complaints about the loading times were quite justified (certainly not a deal breaker, though). If they actually shaved a few seconds off just for North America, you guys can all stop complaining about your crappy packaging.

No way it takes 14 seconds to load the battles. I have the asian version which is the same as the japanese and it usually takes 3-5 seconds maybe.

What it may have taken about 12 seconds was loading new long cutscenes located in a completely different setting and characters.

edit: ok, i didnt pay attention to your complete question, sorry. Like Zefah says, it takes 3-5 for the characters to introduce the battle and maybe 3-5 more to really start giving commands.

It probably is around 14 seconds, but only about 3-5 of those seconds have the player staring at a black loading screen. The remaining 10ish seconds shows the player characters and the enemies "preparing for battle". Once the graphics have loaded up it really doesn't feel like you are waiting for a loading screen, at least not for me. I personally never had a problem with the wait-time that exists before being able to input commands in battle because I am used to most JRPGs having some sort of "introduction sequence" before you are able to control your characters. I really didn't even notice the loading sequences in this game that much and I think they have been blown way out of proportion.

My preview build had a timer showing at each battle loading (from purple to command input), and except right after starting the game where it took between 20 and 30 seconds, it would always take 14-15 seconds to load with a full party of characters and enemies.
And it definitely felt exactly as long with the Japanese and Asian versions.

Your ability to sense the passage of time astounds me. If i sent you a clock, could you sign it and send it back?

Nowhere here has it yet, apparently a snowstorm delayed shipments. I probably won't be able to put any time into this until march(ish), so now i am sad.

I'm surprised the mostly RPG vets that are buying this thing would be struggling with the first boss, it isn't as retarded as other RPG's, but it isn't difficult either, unless you get some unlucky AOE spam that devastates your GC and knocks Jansen on his ass, perhaps.

Just needs proper party management. Leave damage to Jansen, and put the defensive charm on him, keep shields up, keep poison off. Everyone should have Lvl. 1 white magic by now, I filled out every ability and capped my levels without doing a single extra battle.

The fact that the game is making you use it's damn sub systems and abilities is already making the gameplay multiple times better than most fare.

Just beat
Persona this morning, after an hour of SP grinding for status immunities and magic resistance skills.
Yes, this is the first boss I've had to grind for, but it's an optional one tied to achievements, so I don't feel too put out. The reward was a bit naff though -
a rifle for Sed that was 11 calibur below what he already had, and a fire absorb amulet that I guess might come in handy later on.

I've found the
enchanted forest to be a great place for SP grinding, with Sed's SP double skill.

Speaking of skills, I've come across some really useful ones from Jansen and
Sed. Jansen's Double Accessory skill and Sed's Triple Accessory make learning skills through accessories super quick. I also bought a fucking awesome Skill Slot +3 accessory from the auction house, which gives you 2 extra skill slots for free for every immortal, once learned. Anyone know if there's a bigger and better version of that?

3 hrs in and I am already addicted. This is what a next-gen RPG should be. The only problem is that I think my X360 is dying. Whenever there's a graphic rendering with black background, I see what looks to be a lot of static, ie dream. If it's colorful, nothing wrong. Is that how the rendering is or my X360?

Since I had already gone through the
basement of Gongora's mansion
and grinded a bit there all my characters were lvl 49 when I reached that boss. I didn't do anything special to be it except make sure not to attack it when I thought it's use Reverse. I had to use quite a bit of health potions and that's about it.

Is the
Gongora's Mansion boss
tied to any achievements? I might do that one later on. I was trying to XP grind in the Numara Atoll, but 2/3rds of all fights were with those fucking Silver Kelololololons and they just run away. Ended up with most people around Lv45 for the fight with
Persona.

Fought the
Blue Dragon
yet? I'm hoping that one has some pretty decent loot, what with the... obvious reference.

The fights there are quite easy, always the same enemies (5 of the same sort), and as long as you have anti petrification it's a piece of cake even with lvl 43 characters.

Is everyone playing the game with english audio or did they switch to the Japanese track? I'm deciding how to play it before I pick it up after work.

I usually dislike playing with English audio when there is Japanese available, but in LO's case I've used the English voices since the beginning and they fit really nicely.

Btw (don't read unless you are at disc 4)
Was anyone attacked by golden Kelolons when you were in Uhra with Seth and Tolten?

I love the map music, it's freaking awesome. The rest of the music so far though has been pretty meh (i'm only just past the first boss though and I assume it gets a ton better).

Oh, and nothing beats Blue Dragon boss fight music!

Nope, he is definitely not a bitch like Squall. Kaim is more like a very mature man who is tired of living. If anything, he is like Solid Snake in the body of a 25 years old.

I can handle that. As long as there's solid development, and he does more in the game than grunt at everyone he meets/sulk in the corner.

Seriously on the fence about this. I want to job on it because, yay, first real 360 rpg! I'm hesitant because, boo, archaic game design and another moody protagonist :(

I'll watch and listen as you all gush and whine alternately, when has the GAF collective ever steered anyone wrong? (don't answer that)

Don't worry about that, he's on the taciturn side most of the time, but he also opens up from time to time.

I play with the Japanese track and there are a few problems with that:
- At times, the animation doesn't fit the speech at all -- I can only assume it shows the one made for the English version.
- Often the English subtitles are significantly different from what is being said in Japanese (of course this only affects you if you can understand it)

I'm now near the end of disc 3 and I have to again stress how exceedingly beautiful the environments and most of the enemy designs are. It's too bad that the character model and animations are not as great.

In general, LO was lipsynched for the dub. Sakaguchi did this to reward the american crowd apparently. So even in the JP version, the synch is well "messed" up.

My theory on this is, that people (anime related or game) would rather play the JA voice overs compared to the ENG because of the quality. While it goes visa versa. Japan loves ENG voice acting more :D Who knows. Either way, this is one game that has well done and pleasent ENG voice overs to where I don't cringe all the time at the characters.

Looks like I will be picking this game up this weekend due to all the positive impressions. I was a bit hesitant because of the turn-based battle system and the random encounters. However, since the game has a low encounter rate and the fights are supposedly strategic and fun, those shouldn't be a big problem for me. Everything else sounds awesome.

I'll play it in english due to hearing how awesome Jensen is.

Some of his lines are great!

"Hey it's pretty cold up here.", to Seth - "Why don't you turn around?"

Classic Jensen. :lol

I suck at getting perfects on the attack ring. I just started it last night and was up much later then I should've been. I'm addicted to level up and will probably get to level 20 before moving on to the next area. I am right next to the first save spot with a party of 3 on the first mission.

No you won't, the areas have a level cap. Unless you like fighting 100 battles per level that is.

FWIW, I really like the idea of level capping in fairly linear JRPGs. It should theoretically allow them to tune the difficulty of encounters and bosses far more accurately.

I picked this up yesterday and aside from the awful packaging, color me very impressed.

The 1000 Years of Dreams short stories are some of the best writing I've ever seen in a game. It's very moving stuff.

Yup, reading them with the background imagery and while Uematsu music washes over you can be as much as a misuse of the medium as it wants.

It's very immersive and I hope there are a lot of these in the game. I just unlocked the one regarding The Upstreamers, and it seems like they keep getting better and better.

my preorder should arrive tomorrow.

i had an argument with my coworker concerning the load times. he's gonna avoid it just because it has some load times. what bullshit. i checked the load times video on the 1up show and it's not that bad. considering all the positive reviews, i'll deal with some load times. Mass Effect had ridiculous load times but it was still a great game...

i'm glad people here are enjoying the game. it's making me really excited about it.

Once you get the "Ultra" versions of some of the rings you'll have a much easier time getting perfects. Those versions expand the area you need to hit to get perfects.

Just wanted to let everybody know that you can download the weapon guard 2 skill from a Japanese Xbox live account for free and it will work just fine with your version. Not too sure if it also includes the bonus thousand year dream or not. Hope this helps

Are they releasing the 1000 years book outside of Japan? I loved the stories I've encountered so far, reading it on my screen while I was playing a game annoyed the hell out of me. If not, I'll probably skip reading them until I have a bunch unlocked.

I didn't even know about level caps in this game. I've got no problem with them though as it will make me play this differently than most JRPGs.

Like I said..I'm only about an hour into the game but Is there any chance this will become Mistwalkers Final Fantasy series.

You have to make it, I think. I had two of em, one for Kaim and one for Seth. I was only at level 10 though when facing the first boss so it was a challenge.
