Yeah, the dub is actually really good. I am especially impressed with Cooke and Mack, as I was prepared to hate them just by virtue of them being annoying spunky children, but the VA's really make them likable. This game is just an all around pleasant surprise.
The only major upgrades that early on come from turning in 20 seeds to a pipot jar for the adamantium(?) sword and ring. A really nice early upgrade. Even better, in Numara you can talk to some random NPC(I think he was in one of the art houses) that gives you the password to enter the weapon shop where some great upgrades are ready to be bought for all three party members at that point. Also in that shop is a ringsmith that can combine your rings to make pretty cool ones that carry multiple traits(like elemental+attack bonuses, or attack + crit, etc...).
No he's talking about on that road before the next area, there's a little dock along the way. I believe it's right across from the item shop. BTW, I liked all the little secrets there, like how to get the chests across the river and the hidden shop.

Yeah I was kinda annoyed at getting enough seeds to get the first reward AFTER finding the shop that sold a better weapon. Although the Adamantis ring is very nice.
Davedough: To get the chests:
Talk with the woman next to the first gondola(across from the museum), she'll mention meeting her date. Then you go find the other gondola, there's a guy talking about his girl meeting him there. Talk to him a second time and he'll realize he's in the wrong place, move the chest over to your side and leave. Then go back to the first woman, and they'll both be there. Talk again and they'll bring that chest over. Then the other one, you just climb up a ladder in that alleyway where the dog was, and climb down on the other side.
You have to talk to both gondola peeps mutliple times and they will get you the treasures on the other bank. Just talk to them at least twice when you see them both.

Thanks for the tips. I did get that sword and ring from the barrel-dwelling rabbit thingy. Does it give u more cool stuff if u feed it hp/mp items?
I had missed the weapon shop in numara.
I've just scored the boat,
i'll backtrack and check it out.
Small somewhat unrelated question/comment. At times, it feels a little bit as if there's no clear direction or motivation to go anywhere. I mean,
after being set loose in numara, i kinda wandered towards that ghost town place...
but that was pretty random. There wasn't a clear indication as to what i was supposed to do next, or where i was expected to go. I dont mind the freedom, yet at the same time, there doesnt seem to b much structure for a strory driven game. So, yeah,
after u get that boat,
same shit. I know my main emo-in-chief dude decided
he didnt like that gorgonzola guy and was gonna exact revenge. Also he wouldnt mind finding his ex.
But as to where to go to do what to achieve any of that, well... i guess it's up to the player to figure it out. And, again, freedom's fine, but the story is starting to feel pretty loose.
All of that, leading to the question: is there any clear indication of where i'm expected to go to at that point? Or do they just kinda throw u out there and u figure it out?
Yea, only seeds give you rewards from the pipot jars. I think every 20 or so rewards you with a unique item. HP/MP transfers are to upgrade the potency, and status items you give will trade up for different types(ie. antidotes turn into heal-blindness for example).
And yea, stealing sucks. Success rate is so low that I hate to bother. At least you can directly see the items you are trying to swipe with the right skill, and there aren't multiple percentage chances to get a crap item over a great one. Blue Dragon fucked that up, trying to steal awesome sword from boss form 2? Oh you got a healing herb instead! Reload, kill form 1 again, and pray it works! Still, LO has such a low success rate I've counted ten turns out before I stole an item from a dumb wasp early in disc 1.

Of course. Next time you run into one, you'll see the total count of seeds you've handed over already and the count keeps rising until you hit the reward thresholds.

I am really enjoying this game, just started disc 3.
My only gripes with it are that the game feels completely schizophrenic. Like it's Shadow hearts npc designs with Final Fantasy music and it retains SH's weird sense of humor while having a FF like script.
I get a very strange vibe from this game, and I also don't think Unreal Engine 3 was a good choice to go with.
It's very flawed and completely inconsistent but I can't stop playing it. And wtf at no boat music?
Uematsu's score is good but there isn't enough music there. When this game is at it's best though...HOLY SHIT!
You should have enough materials from the end of disc 2 to make a pickpocket ring. It has a higher chance to steal when you land a good or perfect attack.
Well I am about finished with disc one and so far I don't understand the scores this game has received. Unless it gets considerably worse from here on I'd say this is at least a solid 8.5 maybe even a 9.0 game. Tons of items, a cool skill learning system, great graphics and amazing music. Plus finally a traditional JRPG with a NO GIMMICK battle system. I really feel that if this game had a huge franchise name attached to it instead of Lost Odyssey it would of been received much better by the press. I mean XPlay gave it a 3/5... horrible crappy games get 3/5s from XPlay.
Some treasue chest help in the middle of disc 2 please...
Does anybody know how to get the threasure chest on top of the rock in the black cave? I guess, I have to fall through a hole in the floor above but I can't seem to find the right one.
Need help! I'm supposed to go explore the Sorceress' house, but I'm practically out of supplies. There's no store in Tosca and I can't get back to Numara or Uhra--is there anywhere I can go to buy some stuff??

Sounds like your underleveled. I just did that area and did not use a single item. Just make sure a few of your immortals have anti-stone skills. The boss there is also super easy.
Edit. Also after saves, exit out to title screen and reload to restore your mana.

Oh man just got to Numara last night, holy crap @ Jansen :lol
Ok this year for the VGA's we need a special category of "Pimp of the Year" I nominate Jansen
Ok also, when you first enter Numara there is that little girl looking for her dog, is there any way to actually find that? Because all I see every where are freaking cats lol
I'm having more fun with this game than I thought. BD had gotten pretty solid impressions, but it just couldnt get me to stick around. LO, on the other hand, is doing a good job with keeping me interested.
The English VA is better than I expected and the short stories are for the most part, superbly written. I figured I'd get annoyed with the 10 minute interruption each time a dream would occur, but I find myself reading them right away rather than saving them til later. The score is also fantastic. I have really missed Uematsu's musical footprint ever since he went solo from S-E (though I still think it would be great if he just did the compositions while somebody else orchestrated/produced it).
The rest of the game is pretty much similar to older RPGs. Battle system is fairly simple so far (only beaten the
Flying Wyrm
). The directing feels very much like FFX, which I feel is a bit of a step back from FFXII, where the acting was much more fluid. The characters during cutscenes feel either a bit too stiff or too exaggerated. It's certainly not game-breaking or anything (this is exactly how most non-Matsuno directed RPGs are). Similarly, while not gamebreaking I find the loading times a bit annoying (as I did with Mass Effect). It's been awhile since I played a PS2/PSOne era RPG though, so I may have simply not readjusted my expectations back to where they should be.
Looking forward to the game really picking up steam as many have said.
Yeah nothing happens at the Crimson Forest until you settle up everything at the Ghost Town.
I haven't liked a "FF-style" RPG this much in a long time. I was really expecting to hate it, since every FF from X onward just bored me to tears... but I keep coming back to this one.
Also, I really think this game doesn't get enough props for the localization and voice acting. Both seem way above the norm, especially the former.
The reviews for this one are generally too low, IMO.
Well I'm close to finishing disc 1 and I must say this is the best rpg I've played in a very long time (yes, besting Mass Effect, which I didn't think would happen so quick). However, it's also simultaneously the most depressing, heart-wrenching game I've ever played.
Can anyone think of a more depressing storyline for a game? I cannot.
The graphics, music, everything is just top notch. Everyone remotely a fan of rpg's should pick this one up.
So true... in fact, the first 4 or 5 hours seemed so "more of the same" to me, but now - about 30 hours in - I can't tear myself away, I went to bed at 4am last night after
that sweet, super-cinematic battle with Kaim and Sarah atop the train
. The story just keeps getting more and more interesting and the gameplay - with more and more skills to choose from - gets deeper and deeper.
It's not perfect, there are things to nitpick. But the complaints can be leveled against any "FF-style" JRPG. It's a solid game for people who enjoy the genre.
The game keeps growing on me. I had to save right at
the White Boa after playing "sneak past the eye things"
and so far Janson has been giving me a James Woods vibe. But damn if he doesn't have the goofiest outfit...how is that conducive to adventure battling?
I also don't think I explored every inch of the first town, the one with the silly hat brigade. I'm hoping I can get back at some point.
Ugh. I'm part way through disc 2 - and somehow I managed to miss picking up the Earth black magic spell. Is there any way to go back and get it? to buy it somewhere? where is it even?
5 Hours in, stopped only because my eyes started to hurt lol.
Amazing game, I loved Blue Dragon, but this just so much more fun, especially the battles.
I haven't died yet, beaten the first boss easily, though maybe I was lucky because he didn't pull any special move, he just did 100 damage to a character each turn, and sometimes with poisen.
I've got 4 dreams so far, all of them are fantastic reads, but "The Uppstreamers" was too damn good, I can't believe there are still 27 dreams to read.

How are the sales on this game...I have 4 friends on my list playing it...only 3 that had DMC when it came out...I am loving the game so far and would love for it to do well enough to warrant a sequel.

Towards the center of the map you'll find an open area with three pits that are very close to each other. You need to fall through the upper-left one. Your prize:
