Just wait until you fight the
Ancient Ghost Magician Fu. He's not too hard per say; but if you defeat either one of the two Reversed Souls he summons, the other one will use Sacrifice Self to not only completely heal Fu but also revive or completely heal the other Reversed Soul. If you kill enough Black Kelolons to gain enough levels and have the Attack and Magic Absorb and Ailment Resistance skills equipped on all your immortals, you'll be okay. This is also a great place to completely level up all the mortals and learn all their skills. Jansen's Double Cast helps a lot!
Well all my mortals and immortals are at least lvl 60, but I sure don't have
Attack resistance
. I have
ailment resistance and can absorb 3 of the 4 elements (they are all blocked whatever happens)
. Where can I get the stuff I'm missing?
Btw people, don't miss on doing the whole sidequest for Tolten, you'll get some *very* useful stuff.

Blim, what is your take on the story?

Too melodramatic? Deep / Shallow? Enough twists in it and did it keep you captivated in the world? :)
Story is a tad too forced on the sad/teary side, and Gongora is a very predictable villain so far, but the story is still enjoyable.
There are so many sidequests anyway that I keep forgetting that I have an actual story to finish.

finally bought the game, after Gamestop employee asked if I pre-order the game.

Geez, the game came out a week ago u still want me to pre-order it just to get it.
Luckly I called them before hand if they have some in-stock or I wouldn't have gotten one

They asked you that because they were wondering if you put five dollars down on it or not. In addition, if you pre-ordered it you received exclusive downloadable content.

i know about that.
Maybe I'm just being paranoid, because the 1st time i went there to trade-in for LO. I told him. I'm trading-in for LO. He then asked did u pre-order it. i said no. Oh sorry we r out of stock. (this is 1 week after LO came out FYI)
I called the following day and asked a different sales if they ran out of LO yesterday. He said no. They actually got the shipment yesterday. (also on their website they have 4+ available on my local GS)

I'm just wondering if GS sales r pushing this pre-order. He even said the Gamefly will not have any Brawl so pre-order now. Which is Bullshit.

The side quests don't give you any story goodness?

I've had this game for a while but I haven't had time to play it yet, but if the story is just "more of the same" I might skip playing the game as I don't usually play jRPG's for the gameplay mechanics as they usually aren't so fleshed out.

You can get
Absorb Attack
from the Amulet, and its pretty much a luck based skill (like
Absorb Magic
). If you've already learned
Royal Equipment
from Tolten and equipped his
Quad-Element Amulet
to learn
Nullify All Elements
, you don't have to worry about taking damage from any of the four elemental spells. It also helps if you've learned all of Cooke's and Mack's skills and teach both Ming and Sarah
Reduce Casting Time 2
and Seth and Kaim
3 Combo
.

Also, does anyone remember where the auction house is? I must be crazy because I've forgotten where it is!

Last night was all about DQS, but tonight I'll start up the OTHER RPG I picked up yesterday.
3 thoughts:
1) I've read the manual and am ready to begin. Do I need to worry myself over one-times or missables? Missing shit is quite literally a show stopper for me, and from what I heard about the game's speed (or lack thereof), I doubt I'd be inclined to start over. Yeah, OCD or whatever.

2) I redeemed my preorder code and presumably unlocked the extra content and rewards. Will accessing it be relatively obvious?

3) WTF at the strange way of storing 4 discs in this case. 3 discs in the case +1 in a paper sleeve? Haha!

So, Disc 2 started in pure awesomeness, and I got da SHIP! Man I love this game. I think I got most of the shit in the Crimson Forest including that Demon Ring and Sword, which come fucking helpful in the upcoming fight. Man, I love this game.

What the hell.

So just by PURE COINCIDENCE Seth and co find them?

What the fucking shit

Someone wasn't paying attention. :lol

Seth said she tracked the magic energy coming from the amulet she gave back to Ming

Agent Icebeezy

Welcome beautful toddler, Madison Elizabeth, to the horde!
Jensen
is like the best damn sidekick ever with all of his jokes and other shit. His lines crack me the fuck up damn near every cut scene. Whoever wrote this script is a genius.

I'll add my 2cents to this thread. I'm just about the end of Disc 2 having clocked in 24hrs so far.

Impressions:

1. Graphics: Top notch. The visuals are stunning, although if you look hard enough there are some inconsistencies. Particularly at the begging of the game, the elevator doors seemed completely out of place.

2. Music: Awe inspiring, jaw-dropping. Just absolutely fantastic. I usually play before I go to work and I end up humming either the boss battle song or the battle song on the way to work.

3. Game play: JRPG. Its Final Fantasy with some twists and turns here and there. The ring system is a nice touch, but its nothing revolutionary.

4. Story: So far so good. It does stretch itself a bit in the 2nd disc but the story telling has been extremely enjoyable.

6. Presentation: Absolutely Perfect. Everything from the cut scenes, to the dialog and the music it all comes together quiet nicely.

Final thoughts: Since I've been playing I've gotten this weird feeling of Dejavu. This game to me feels like a continuation to the Final Fantasies of old.(Before 8) Theres just something there that feels quiet familiar, but yet brand new. Its freaking awesome and I'm loving every minute of it.

Hopefully what I've been seeing in stores(sold out in many) converts into atleast 500k sales in Feb for NA, because this game deserves a sequel.

Dude. I'm still confused about some of the story and I'm on disc 4.
They just said that Gongora killed Lirum but Lirum clearly survived!
That makes no sense! :lol What exactly did he do?

Yes, someone clear that up for me too. Did
he just make her terminally ill
, or something?

That's my take on it.
Why else would she die so young?

And Himuro, that amulet is obviously special. :)

Just finished disc 3 as well... now, disc 4 for the weekend (sidequests!).

I have a few technical questions since I love knowing what my games do:

1) Does LO have some kind of AA? I think it has FSAA 2x, but of course, not sure.
2) Any kind of AF?
3) "true" 720P?

Yeah, I like knowing what my games do =P if anyone knows help!

GDC: Feelplus' Nakazato Details Lost Odyssey's Collaborative Process

Feelplus president Ray Nakazato was at the 2008 Game Developers Conference to discuss the collaboration between Final Fantasy producer Hironobu Sakaguchi's Mistwalker group and Feelplus to develop Lost Odyssey. It originally began as an in-house Microsoft project before Feelplus assumed a role, Nakazato explained, as he showed a trailer of the fantasy RPG.

A lot more at this link, haven't read it myself. Enjoy:

Anyone got any tips for the second boss? I got to its second phase before it killed me. :-(

Have Jansen focus on spamming the Worm with Aqua countless times while Kaim and Seth attack the little bugs and heal whenever necessary. It also helps if you have the Anti-Paralysis skill so when the Worm does use his super move, your entire party won't be paralyzed.

"In summary, Nakazato said, the project's weak point was the speedy growth of the team. "I think we were able to get really highly skilled people together, but it was a new team, a new platform and a new middleware. Because of this, I think it was quite a challenging project. I don't think that could have been resolved, but we've done it once -- so if we were to do it again, we could do it much more smoothly and be more productive."

I hope we get another game. I'm liking Feel+

So they faced problems with UE3 as well, which is obvious considering the framedrops and the long loading times, but then again most of the game blows everything out of the water so they did something good.

Also, I noticed the difference between cutscenes as explained there, but I took it like for scripted events it meant it was nothing too big, and that gameplay would quickly follow. I for one, love the cutscenes, they practically make LO the game it is.... and I am a cutscene lover so that helps.

Also, should I have better weapons by this point in the game? I haven't been seeing any.

From the Gamasutra article:

"Using the Unreal Engine is also a bad thing. In Japan, those who are used to JRPG engines have a different style. They have their own philosophy. But Unreal 3 Engine also has its own philosophy. Both are inconsistent and incompatible. If we knew that earlier, we could have a consensus that we should use Unreal 3's method and philosophy... but we just applied our old philosophy." Overall, he said, the integration did not go well.

"We feel like we are porting our product to a new platform," he said. "We expected it's going to be just a little update or version-up, and if UE3 has a new version, we can use it quickly. But every time, when we start using the new version when we integrated the new version into our engine, it took six weeks; it took a lot of time and effort, and everything evolved so quickly and rapidly so integration was very difficult. Now I hear UE3 is getting more stable, but at the time it evolved so quickly it was difficult to keep up with it."

I just finished the first disc and am loving the game so far, but the technical issues really bother me. Framerate drops during cutscenes and the first five to ten seconds of every battle . Also, save/load times are getting longer =/

Should be a standard spell on Jensen if I'm not mistaken.

Really? But he only has Flare, Wind as defaults. Then the usuals like Prism, Stone, Sleep, etc. Also, in the beginning of Disc 2, do not get out of the Crimson Forest, go all the way to the west and there'll be a small lift that will take you to a floating place where you can get the Demon Ring and the Demon Sword. They work VERY good.

Loving this game so far, I just made it to the Crimson forest and I already have as much achievements as my game of BD... on disc 4. Happy to see the achievements are so less stingy than BD was.

I hate that the reviewers really attacked this one, its not a 10/10 game but it certainly deserve more than a 7. The dreams are great (my fav so far is "Letters of the weak" and "little liar") and Jansen has become my favorite character with his oneliners.

It's been a long time, been a long time, been a long lonely lonely lonely lonely lonely time.
Man, all these great impressions are making me want to go out and pick this up. It sounds like just what I was expecting from Mistwalker :D
Too bad I'm in the middle of Oblivion at the moment and probably won't have time for any other games till I'm done with that. Oh well, this is definitely on my "to get" list once I have the time.

Thanks everyone for the impressions!

Game of the year so far, even though its only almost March. If this had been released in 2007 as planned, it still would have made it into my top 3 overall from last year.

I didn't know if I would enjoy it as much as I enjoyed Mass Effect, but at this point I would be hard pressed to decide between the two. There are so many battle customization options, and the moving storyline has never been done better than in Lost Odyssey.

While I like this game a lot, some of the drama attempted at in the story just isn't puled off. Specifically the
funeral
and the part where
Cooke and Mack sing to bring Kaim's wife out of her slump.
. So agonizing.

The part following it was fine, though.

I was very moved at both of those scenes, go figure. I am usually very cynical when it comes to gaming storylines, but LO has impressed me in almost every scene.

I really like Cooke and Mack, and Jansen makes me laugh. I can't remember the last time I felt as connected to video game characters.

Also, what is the deal with this inconsistent music? The song that plays at the Northern Cape is fucking beautiful as well as some of the other orchestrated themes, but at there are also some shitty synth tracks thrown into the mix.

Seriously! Who would have ever thought of diversity being a good thing?!

Someone who can put together a soundtrack with consistent music? Just because your music is diverse, doesn't mean it all works within the context of the game.

EDIT: And don't get the idea that I dislike the soundtrack. This game has earned at least a few spots on my top whatever list of favorite game music, but some of the tracks sound pretty bad.

Yea theres some missables. I think all of them (or at least that i know of) involve stealing. Most treasures on maps and what not can be acquired other ways.
