is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Great game so far, been playing for ~20 hours and just made it into the mansion. Very Shadow Hearts-esque area, that is. My biggest complaint aside from the load times (and they aren't really TOO bad, thankfully the encounter rate is very manageable) is that you spend so much time in villages/story cinemas, and that it seems like I haven't even scratched the surface of the gameplay portions of the game. Can't believe disk 1 ended so suddenly. About how long is the game? Can I expect 50 or so hours after doing most of the subquests?

i'm sorry, I have to disagree with you as I had a gleeful grin across my face the entire time I played BD

the game has alotta heart
That's exactly how I played Blue Dragon. This game had an amazing sense of wonder/discovery, not mentioning of course the antics of Toriyama's characters.

So anyone know if I can just go back to the Ice Canyon and get that crown? I don't even think there was a playable moment after that win. Didn't it just go right into the cutscene? Was it loot and I just didn't get it?

If you have just entered Gohtza, you should be able to exit from the beginning and go back to the Ice Canyon.

To everyone who enjoyed BD: I do envy you, and there were things I really liked about it, but did it not feel utterly sparse to any of you? I hated all the characters, too. It felt like Skies of Arcadia but without any likability.

Edit: Oh god MaruMaro, fucking shoot me. Though I imagine I should have played with the Japanese VA.

Which reminds me, I love the VA for LO. I think Jansen is incredible, I've heard the actors don't get to hear what the other characters are saying in any given situation and yet he still nails all the jokes.

Put me on the list of those finding this game difficult. Haven't played an RPG in ages but I did play a lot back in the day.

Also holy shit at Dirty Disc Error.
I've only had one so far and it was about a minute from a save point. I've had some boss battles and cutscenes that take me to well over an hour since the last save point. If I ever got a DDE after that time period I might just snap.

1. Run after the penguin as soon as it slides down the ice, tough it and you'll get an item (i forgot the item)

2. Simply push the corresponding letters in the order they appear under the score.

ex: ccbr deer cgre bebe

You would need a formation of 4 characters and you would just play the letters in that order.

Yeah, silly but so funny. Like everything Toriyama did before DB fucking Z.

I also really enjoyed BD. Blim, I am curious how oyu feel about press accusing BD and LO to be made specifically to be DQ and FF clones. I personally disagree. I get much more a sense espesially from LO that "Guch" took an opportunity to makes games that really matched his vision and that Mistwalker provides opportunity for him to do things with his games he otherwise would not have been able to do.

One is a JRPG that is geared towards all ages, the other is a JRPG geared towards adults. Personally, I think saying BD is a DQ clone is way off. They are both pretty standard fare for what they were trying to do I would say.

Obviously you already beat it so this doesn't help now, but for that fight, I did the following:

Had Ming equipped with Spirit Magic in addition to white/black and composite
Mack casted Powera on himself, Ming casted Speeda on Mack, Jansen casted All Shield, and Cooke used Casting Support on Ming.

Next turn.

Mack attacked, Ming healed, Jansen casted All Barricade.

From there on out, I had three people healing for the whole fight and was able to finish with close to full HP on everyone.

This is where I got stuck the other day. I don't think I have many ground bombs left, so this might be my ticket out of that damn cave.

I don't think they should be considered as clones, but they are definitely aimed at the same markets as their would be "originals".
Sakaguchi himself said that Lost Odyssey would have been what FFXI (or XII, whatever) would have been had he still worked on the series, that as much a confirmation as we'll ever get. LO is really a lot like FFX in many senses.
Besides Toriyama's (obviously) art and lighthearted universe, I wouldn't say that BD and DQ are that close (didn't play much DQs though, only a few hours of DQ8) though.

I finished the second CD last night and I gotta say, I love this game. Some of the overarching plot elements are a little weird and vague, but the majority of characters are really entertaining and the dialogue is a lot of fun. I haven't died yet, but the combat does keep you on your toes and I love setting up my immortals with tons of skills. Right now it seems like the front row is just a meat shield for the mages, who do an excessive amount of damage compared to the fighters. The plot also moves at a seemingly brisk pace, which is nice too. I'm really glad I didn't pass on this one like I originally intended.

I just finished the second disc as well. I'm loving it so far. Best total experience I've had on the 360 since Crackdown (still my fav. 360 game.) The end of the first disc was so good.

I'm loving the translation/voice acting. The personalities that come through are very well done.

I was starting to think the combat system was a little uninspired, and while I still think that to a slight degree, but progressing through the second disc, it's really grown on me.

This is a really good game, and anybody who likes RPGs and has a 360 should give it a shot. I'm digging this a lot more than Mass Effect, personally, and I've had a tendency to get pretty tired of JRPGs of late.

Really enjoying the game. I liked BD but I like LO better. I enjoy the more dramatic aspects of LO. Any sales number yet? I really hope there is a sequel.

Didn't get the memo regarding the 14th Amendment
Man, I'm loving this gen. Lost Odyssey is absolutely awesome. It's definitely in my top 10 favorite games, maybe even top 5, so far and I'm just at the end of disk 1.

Now for some spoilers:

I'm about to go into the Crimson Forest, but I want to get 20 seeds for that pipet, I already gave 20 to the Grand Staff Construction Base for that nifty sword and bracelet and now I gotta find 20 for this one.

Anyway, seeing Lirum's funeral was definitely one of the best emotional experiences in gaming that I have seen. This story, to which I thought was impossible, matches, and maybe even surpasses, Metal Gear Solid's. The Dreams have a lot to do with that, but the story so far, even without the dreams, just makes you want to keep on playing. I never knew I'd have so much fun with this - it even beats Mass Effect, something I thought was impossible as I prefer WRPGs to JRPGs.

Cooke and Mack are also awesome. What game allows you to play with your grandkids, and potentially your wife as well?

Sakaguchi is the man!

First Blue Dragon, and now this. I think I'm going to get ASH: Archaic Sealed Heat, if it goes stateside. Consider me a Mistwalker fan.

I'm taking it pretty slow I guess, 11? hours in I think and just finished the
funeral
. I'm really close to labeling this my favorite rpg. I'm certainly enjoying it more than any other in well over a decade. It reminds me *SO* much of FFVI, in all sorts of ways. Oh and the VA work is terrific, Jansen started off kinda annoying but holy shit he's redeemed himself fifty times over since the
White Boa escape
. Doesn't hurt that I'm a huge fan of Crispin Freeman either.

Also so far these kids have been one of the most sincere and honest depictions of children in a videogame... uh... ever. Maybe the rest of the game has snuckered me in, but they are just incredibly believable. The funeral stuff was also incredibly serene, the whole "I wanna do something too" just got to me.

I'm just really freaking impressed by this game, considering my usual aversion to jrpgs.

Oh and holy crap at the short stories. They are just disgustingly well done. I think I'm batting about a .500 on whether or not I bawl like a little girl while reading em. Question though, they seem to be in order of when you find them, but I've got some undiscovered ones. Are those gone for good or can I get em sometime later?

Around 40 hours of gameplay so far, somewhere on CD4. I'm doing sidequests mostly right now, and having some fun. Jansen has grown out on me, and I actually appreciate him now...

Definitely the best jRPG to hit the Xbox brand, but overall I'd rank it outside of my top 5 (I just love FF too much). Can't wait for more projects for MistWalker, as they've redeemed themselves as far as I'm concerned after the disappointing BD.

Not a Jellyfish

but I am a sheep
For people who have finished the game.
I noticed on the fourth disk so far there has been a lot of downtime. Now when you complete the game can you continue on to do side quest or do I have to go ahead and do them now. Also just had that fight at Numarra palace and Jansen and The queen kissed. After that no real direction on what to do next it is kinda stopping me from finishing the game. Where to after Numarra.

I also really like how they have done the kids as well, though
I'm getting pretty fucking tired of Mack whining 'bu-bu-but I wanna see Mom! Let's go put ourselves in danger again!'. It's probably a very real representation of how kids are, and follows the reasoning of the story - Lirum reviving them and all- but I just find it annoying. The same goes with Seth doing stupid shit every time she hears the name Sed. Thank god Sed is fucking badass
. Aside from a few stiff characters (I'm looking at you Tolten), the acting has really gotten a lot better from the beginning of the game.

I died in the
Ice Cave looking for Kaim and Sarah
. First time I've died since early 2nd disc. The mostly magic team just gets hammered without a decent tank. By the time my team is lining up their spells, the enemies have murdered Mack/Jansen or whoever is in the front row. I didn't have this much trouble with the team of
Seth, Sed and Tolten
. That team was beastly, often times coming out of battles without getting touched once.

Beat the game this morning and I really liked it overall. Hopefully it sells well so MS can greenlight LO2.

I think there is plenty more story left over that needs to be shown.

I like the game but damn the battle system is achingly slow. Long loads before battle is bad enough but did they have to make 5 seconds of nothing between the end of one animation and the start of another? And I enjoy the ring system but why can't the ring timing happen during the attack animation instead of being a separate 4 second animation before the actual attack? I seriously hope whoever designed this crap never works on another RPG combat system again. Otherwise the game is pretty well designed though it doesn't really do much that FF9 didn't already do. It does have a better difficulty than FF9 though.

Am I the only one here unimpressed with the graphics?

Sure, the game looks nice, but in comparison to Blue Dragon, the game is a visual failure. Yes, I actually said that. Unreal Engine 3 is to blame.

I just got to Numara and even Numara looks bland and dead. The only place that I remember admiring the visuals at all was when I made it to the Ipsilon Mountains. The game looked nice up there, but outside of that, Blue Dragon takes Lost Odyssey, beats it down, and kicks sand in its face in terms of technology.

Totally disagree. Lost Odyssey frequently looks amazing.

I think I'm about to give up on this game. I'm in the ruins on the 4th disc, and kind of feel like I'm forcing myself to finish it. It's combination of my growing bored with the battles, not wanting to do this party split platform puzzle, monkeys stealing all my good accessories, and the storyline gradually going from inventive & interesting to generic clichetown.
Ming's "Oh wait now I remember everything" just seemed like the complete wrong way to handle exposition, and overall the story seems to lack the deep emotional overtones that it had for the first 2 discs.

I'm gonna sit on it for a few days and see if I want to go back to it, but, unlike last weekend when I invested a good 20 hours into it, this weekend I just wanted to play N+ & CoD4 instead, and that's kind of how I feel right now.

I am in the same boat; near the end of disc 3, getting destroyed by the Burning Cave Ice Boss, and hating it. This grows increasingly tedious...

keep playing, you will find better looking places than the "fashion disaster" that is Numara.

So what's with playing Lost Odyssey on old CRT TV's?? I recently bought this game and it's damn blurry to play. I'm a little pissed off that this game is as blurry as it is. The game should've have big bold letters stating that it was meant to be played on HDTV. I'm having to squint on my 26" CRT..I'm loving the graphics, but it's a pain trying to read the blurry text in battle.

I felt similarly for the early parts of the game. I liked party character detail and thought the lighting was nice, but the environments were very blah. And to me, Numara looked way too much like parts of Enchanted Arms. : \

But I'm on disc 4 now and think it looks great. It really turns around, and looks better and better as it goes.

Actually the battle mechanics themselves are good enough. It's just the presentation of the battles that is god awful, mainly because of the super sluggish speed. Was Higuchi responsible for coding the battles or did he just design the system? I thought feelplus may have been to blame at first.

It's just a shame because the rest of the game is executed so nicely.

I had that problem on my 19" TV... But, then again, I had that problem with all of my 360 games, especially Mass Effect. It sucks because I really want to play the games, but not being able to read the text is a killer.

He said that after Katsuhisa Higuchi joined the staff on LO, he helped add a ton of depth into the game's battles. Everything from the enemy AI routines, to the balance of the skills and rings, to boss battles and battle depth was improved or contributed by his experience.

the speed feels like classic psx rpgs, i don't think he is to blame, perhaps the engine is to blame or feel plus.

I don't know, the psx ffs may have been this slow(though I doubt it was quite as slow), but at least with the ATB system they allowed the player's strategic input every few seconds. I think a system like Lost Odyssey's where all commands are input at the beginning of the turn demands a much faster battle engine than this.

My main problem with game right now is save system. To much in-between save points. Add in the effect of of my 360 having disc read errors/me working, it's hard to get stuff done.

That's my main problem and im really getting tired of it. I've run through the temple of enlightenment 3 times now and I can't motivate myself to do it again. I'd do anything for a save anywhere deal. DRE's getting old.
