The Republican Party has chosen "Fulfilling America's Promise by Building a Safer World and a More Hopeful America" as the overall theme of its 2004 national convention, which will take place Aug. 30-Sept. 2 in New York. MSNBC Cable will carry the convention live for eight hours each day, from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. ET. Each day also has its own theme. Here's a day-by-day look at the agenda:
Monday, Aug. 30
"A Nation of Courage:" New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will open the convention and welcome delegates. Featured speakers that evening will be former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who will talk about the courage of Americans and New Yorkers on Sept.11, 2001, and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who will speak on the bravery of Ameriucan servicemen and women. Other speakers: Rep. Heather Wilson, Bernie Kerik, Rob Khuzami, Zainab Al-Suwaij, Angie Harmon and Jason Sehorn, Sen. Lindsay Graham.

"People of Compassion:" Featured speakers are first lady Laura Bush and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Others: Sen. Elizabeth Dole, Rep. "A Land of Opportunity:" Sen. Zell Miller, a Democrat from Georgia, will deliver the convention's keynote address. The party says Miller "will speak about the land of opportunity created by President Bush's pro-growth, pro-American worker, pro-American entrepreneur agenda." Vice President Dick Cheney will be the featured speaker, addressing "the administration's record of creating opportunity for all Americans and the president's vision for spreading freedom around the world to ensure our safety at home." The party says he "will lay out his vision for the next four years — a vision that will help build a safer world and a more hopeful America. ... Drawing inspiration from the courage and compassion of all Americans, the president will talk about his plan for building a safer world by spreading freedom around the globe."
