Official Virtua Fighter 5 Thread

Holy shit.

As I stated before I missed out on EVO(but not EVO) so I never played the quest mode.

And...

DAAAAAAMN!

It's so freaking slick!! I'm loving everything about it. This might be the best single player experience I've seen with a fighting game. It really does the best it can to bring the arcade experience home(although playing AI will never match playing real life people)

I WAS having so much fun until I decided to go into a tournament with low battery life on my controller. In the middle of the first match the controller died I couldn't find the usb cable(which apparently my brother had... ugh) and I lost the match. First thing that came to my mind was... DON'T LET THAT SHIT SAVE. Unplugged the shit lol.

Does it automatically save after the match or did I save my record and chance to win that tourny?

Thanks, guys. I'm starting to go the advanced arcades and doing fights against the people with stars next to their profiles (for loot).
As I understand it, the guys with the stars next to their name are people you've already beaten in a match. If you want to complete Quest mode, I was thinking you had to fight the people without stars.

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, taking advantage of the difference in responsiveness between the sticks would most likely require a fairly high level of play.

.oO( No, I'm not even sure myself what that means...lemme try again)

If you're not a VF Tourney player, there's technically no reason to pay twice the price and import a Sanwa stick. Hit up EB and score a perfectly fine Hori FS3.

If you are a VF Tourney player, or seriously want to devote the time needed to get very, very good at VF, or are a stickler for those kinds of things and have the cash to spare, then you should probably spring for the more expensive stick.

Those looking for authenticity should also stack crumpled cigarette packs near the buttons at all times, and put a few cigarette burns into the plastic for good measure...if you're not willing to go the entire way, it's not an authentic experience and you're just frontin' :D

Sorry if this has already been asked in here, but would it be better for my 1080p Sony LCoS to scale VF5, or to have the PS3 actually output at 1080p (with video settings set exclusively to 1080p)?

Pros
+Great graphics.
+Best music in a VF game so far.
+Quest mode is great and even better than Evo's.
+AMAZING presentation. I'm glad they ditched the XTREME, TOTALLY XBOX attitude from VF4. VF is all about class, and this game's presentation is beautiful and very classy.
+Gameplay/fighting engine is perfected.
+Character customization is superb and varied.
+Eileen and El Blaze are the best new characters ever.

Cons
-Sound effects sound pretty bad.
-Gimped training mode. I want the CPU to demonstrate any move for me. It's also missing the basic VF tutorial from Evo.
-Character speech is cheesier than ever (Lion, I am looking straight at you). The winning poses make up for it I guess.
-No challenges in Quest mode (eg. win without falling down)?
-VF.TV option feels useless and tacked on. It should've had some sort of online implementation.
-Why I can't I choose my routes in Arcade mode? I loved doing that in Evo.
-Money is too hard to get in Quest mode.

Overall, amazing game. I'd give it a 9.0/10. It probably would've been an easy 10 if AM2 had more time with this port.

Edit: Grammar.

Okay last question.

I got the Fighting Stick 3.

How do I set it up so that the buttons are exactly like they are in the arcade, or is this the default? I couldn't find a picture of the VF5 cabinet arcade stick layout so I can't tell!

The button layout in the arcade is like this

Code:
   P K
G

K is actually a little higher, but basically map the left most 3 buttons.

Gotta echo the praise for this game. Class act all the way!

This is perhaps the first time I've realized a fighting game can be elegant. I've played VF4:Evo, but never really "got it" until tonight. And though I've but scratched the surface, already I'm playing this fighter in completely different fashion than any before.

I'm using Sarah and love the way she flits around the stage, waiting for her opponent to strike... thin air... and then moving in to deliver a flurry of blows. Again. Again. Victory! Hehehe.

Presentation is amazing. Music, impeccable. OK, the graphics are great, but I still expect PS3 and 360 to destroy this game graphically in a few years. The character models are beautiful, but the backgrounds ARE a little flat and some of the textures look pretty fake.

My big problem is the overscan. I'd read someone's post about unchecking all but 1080p in system settings, and I did so, but the overscan persists. I've got a Sammy HLS-6187 1080p set if anyone has any suggestions...

Bottom line after my first night of play - this game is great. I can't remember the last time I felt so satisfied with the single-player experience in a fighting game.

Good job, Sega.

I have overscan as well. Isn't it a fault of the TV though, and not really the game? I mean, if you have overscan, you'll have it for everything right? I think that many developers realize this, and purposefully move HUD items and such in towards the screen more, so you don't notice it in other games. Or maybe I'm wrong.

I've been a Tekken fan all my life. It was one of the first games I played for Playstation. It's just not really that fun for me anymore, though.

I've never played a Virtua Fighter before. From what I'm hearing, it seems to have a lot more to it than other fighting games. So, I was at Wal-Mart the other day and picked up VF4: Evolution for $15 to see if I like the series. I'm not sure if I want to drop $60 on a fighting game since I've kind of got burnt out on them. No doubt, thanks to Tekkenitis. So, for you VF afficianados, was that a good choice? Is Evolution the next best one?

Been having a lot of fun with this, but I have one retard question:

What in the **** does "____ WINS GOING AWAY!" mean? The commentator says this after nearly every match.

Also, I'm convinced that they should've gotten Jason Bateman to return to his role as Pepper Brooks from Dodgeball and have him instead of the obnoxious second commentator, who I can only describe as Madden-esqe.

"This next round...is the LAST round."

Thanks, asshole.

Yes. The game hasn't aged well in terms of graphics though.

Which would be better for my TV? Running VF5 in 720p or 1080i? Note that i have a CRT HDTV capable of 720p, but doesn't natively support it.

I'd assumed it was the case since I had like 3 item matches in a row, but yeah, I realized it was just an assumption after a while.

Does choosing hard in the quest mode net you more money and items?

As for graphics, I'd put this right next to Gears of War and the Motorstorm demo as being "holy ****ing god" tier.

Personally I couldn't notice the difference between 720p and 1080i on my 1080i set. I set it to 1080i just to make sure there would be zero lag introduced by the tv, but I don't get any lag when playing it on 720p either. Just try it both ways. But if you have a good scaler in your set you shouldn't notice any difference.

Yep. To me this is only behind Gears visually and it's 60fps running on a Gefore 6800.

Goes to show that art >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> tech.

Started playing Akira two days ago. I tried him out in the arcades, but I didn't want to pick up a new character in the arcades and waste my cash learning him, even if there are other noobs playing against me. I got a lot of combos down with him, and I want to take some movies of them because some of them are just flat out fun to do :lol The AI in Quest mode is totally stupid, so I can pull off Yoho, P, 1f Knee, Double Palm just about every match. Totally not applicable in a real match unless your opponent makes a serious mistake, but man it's fun to do!:lol :lol

I went on a VF5 marathon tonight, nearly 4 hours straight, you just can't stop playing this game. I decided to just use Lau so I can get far in quest mode. I made it to 6th dan and my record is 93-7. The game does seem to be easier, I am beating up 9-10 dans pretty easily. Overall the quest mode in VF4 Evo was better, as I stated before this version is missing the missions you can do. Also prizes come way to rarely, same with tournaments. Oh and whats with not making any money, the loser of the fight gets the money, what is that. You need to wait forever for a tournament to open to make anything.

Also I remember VF4 giving you a breakdown of every aspect of your character, how well you do agaisnt certain players, the percentages of hit accuracy and all sorts of stats. None of that is in this game. I hate to sound negative but its sad that features are leaving rather than being added.

But the customization has been taken to a new level, wow some of the changes are major. Some characters don't even look like themselves anymore, its really cool. Anyway over the weekend I will pick a new character to focus on, its time to retire Lau.

It's been said like three times already, you earn your money once you actually lose a match. Basically the longer your streak is, the more money you'll get when you lose. think of it as "cashing out" when you drop a match.

Dural makes me want to obliterate my ps3. I had full life and one more hit till I killed the shemale and what does Dural do? Tosses me twenty feet in the air and performs a 10 hit juggle which knocks me out of the ring!!!!

TBH, I've only killed Dural once ever since I started playing the first VF. XD Bastard always gets me with some random 18 hit string...

And that's how you make money? Dammit! =/ I guess I better add more Ls to my 208 - 9 score. Most of those came from 2p also. >_<

I know demotion happens at Master Rank, but does it happen at Veteran as well? I'd hate to get a good winning streak going on then happen to get demoted on some random loss all for the sake of making money.

I rigged Arcade mode and finally beat Dural, ONCE. Very easy, 300% hp vs 160% hp and 15 second battle :D I hit and runnnn....ruuuuunnnnn as far away as possible till the clock is down to zero.

I feel like, on average, I barely touch G and that's why I'm such a noob.

Me too! I'm still getting used to the gameplay, but I think it'll "click" later today.

And whoever earlier said that the graphics aren't that impressive is a damn liar. They're stunning, but you can't really stop and appreciate it when you're playing.

Hey

New to the boards--possible refuge from 1up, looking for a more mature board. Anyway, I just read a review of VF5 that complained about the relatively dumb AI, and I was curious as to people's experiences here. I realize that vs. is where it's at, but I don't really know anyone who is into fighting games, and if I got this I'd basically be playing by myself. Is it worth it for single player only?

To the Pros...

How does Brad ranked on the "ease of use scale"?? I'm pretty new to the series with this game, and he's the character I started playing with. Did I pick a hard character to learn or what?

There isn't a fix for this.

If you are using a CRT or a rear projection set, there will be some overscan.

Flat panel displays should all be perfect, however. There are no problems on my plasma, for instance. They really do bring elements of the screen right out to the edge, though.

What happens if you never lose, if you just want to leave that arcade and go to another one, or a tournament starts up, you get nothing. Its so stupid, its almost as if the devs screwed up who was supposed to earn the money in the fights.

That's the system because it's how the arcade game works, they simply ported it over from that. In real arcades you wouldn't just quit the game. You'd have to lose, that's why you get no money from exiting a game to participate in a tournament.

Do any of the characters have endings when you beat arcade mode? I've beat it on very easy, easy and normal with no success.

There is actually a tiny tiny bit of overscan on the LG plasma I'm playing on... But it's nothing compared to what I would have on my Samsung Slimfit HDTV which has HORRIBLE geometry issues.

ah well.

And to answer, no there isn't leehom. If there even is a story out there for VF it's probably just fanmade.

Wow, that's rather interesting.

VF5 pushes the borders SO CLOSE to the edge of the screen that I'd imagine anything with the slightest bit of overscan will suffer. I wonder why they do not allow HUD adjustments?

They don't? I was going to lookin into that today when I play..

ah well.

I'm getting a lot of overscan on my LCD HDTV in 720p. In 1080i it's a lot better, I'm losing only 1/2 an inch. But my LCD has poor scanning issues with 720p altogether, so I prefer to play my games in 1080i.

I was hoping they would have little movies at the end of the game like Tekken :( It feels empty finishing the game with no ending.

I get a little over scan too. On the top where it says insert coin/push start whatever it's cut in half. Other than that....it's almost perfect. This is on a Sammy LNS-3252D @ 720p.

I'm all about Eileen, and Lei Fei.

First fighting game in a long time I actually watch all my replays. It's so pretty.

Dumb question. How do you turn on the commentary?

Play quest mode if you're looking for a awarding single player experience from the game

Man, this game is so ****ing amazing. I swear, I've been brought back to the good ol' SF2 days. The combat system is nearly flawless and the animations are probably the best I've seen in a fighting game. Played it for like 4 hours with a friend last night. Lei Fei, Jacky, and Pai are BAD ASSES! And for the first time in a long time, I actually want to learn how to use each character! A rarity for me, nowadays!

With this game and fl0w, PS3 is finally starting to be worth something more to me than a Blu-ray player. w00t, w00t!

it`s not in audio options, it`s in main game options , but trust me you dont wanna hear the commentary.

Eileen and Lei Fei are cool for their Kung Fu-ness.

Im a Shun player and his new Sou and bt Sou stances got me stumped because they require more time to get a hang of because of the timing of entering the stance, because he automaticly drinks if you are too slow when enterting a Sou stance
