On a scale of 1-10, how well would you rate yourself at driving?

Younger me? Verbal road-rager who drove too fast. Popped a tire going too fast in a corner and learnt my life lesson the lucky, easy and no one injured way within the first month of driving. Thank fuck.

5 out of 10 for being bit of a speeder.

Me now at 40? Deduct 1 point for accelerating fast sometimes but almost always sticking to the speed limit, always indicate, give way and generally a good driver. Deduct another 1 point as I can tailgate a bit without noticing but I have solid reaction times and great awareness, which makes me too relaxed about stopping distances I suppose.

So I give myself 8/10 as I can drive manual/auto/4x4, on/off road, tow trailers/caravans/boats, park just fine and handle vans/trucks well enough too.

I'd say 7. I'm a pretty solid driver though I haven't parallel parked in like 10 years (not really needed in my city) so I might not be able to do that anymore as quickly.

Been to one accident but that's wasn't on me, a moose ran in front of my car.

Ladies and Gentlemen you are about to witness Illusory Superiority in action

93% of US drivers can't be in the top 50% lol
Meaning there are a lot of deluded drivers out there!

well, to be fair, nobody said the OP's scale needs to be a bell curve with 50% having 5 or below, and 50% having 6-10.

I've been accident free for close to 10 years now - not even a dent. I can parallel park fine. I don't experience road rage. I know when to take a break. I drive at the required speeds on the freeway. I can drive stick and automatic. I have good perception with regards to the cars that surround me of the freeway.
So yeah, i'd say i'm at least an 8/10

Have no issues with parking, used to work at a Ford dealership where I had to park everything from tiny Focuses to huge duel rear wheel Super Duty trucks in tight spaces. I learned real quick how to park.

I drive a GTI which is small but I also drive my dad's expedition often. Back at my previous job I got to drive the delivery truck and I did well the few times I got to drive. There's definitely things I could do better though.

Dunno if I can apply a number to it, as I'm still relatively new, having just got my first car last year.

I think I'm alright, albeit I'm almost always over the speed limit, and I have no awareness of where the right side of my car is on the road, which sucks when driving through neighborhoods or on small roads whenever there's oncoming traffic.

I'd say pretty high but certainly not perfect because I get angry a lot when I'm in the car by myself:

- People staying in the left lane (can't overtake on the right here).
- People overtaking trucks only slightly faster than what the truck is actually driving.
- People not reacting (quickly enough) to a green light.
- Old people driving slowly on the highway.
- People texting or not calling handsfree while driving.

Edit: Oh and I need to turn down the radio when I'm getting closer to my destination. Especially when it's in Amsterdam.

I got my driving license just a month ago and my first car on Saturday. I would say I'm around 4 at this time or so.

If nabe considers himself an 8 then I am rating myself too high at a 7. Lol. I guess 6 as a high is more accurate.

I passed the driving test my first try. Both written and practical. It's not hard at all and way too simple imo. Only thing I did wrong was drive a bit over the speed limit in a 40mph zone. I was going 45.

Yeah, I was thinking more on a scale of 1 is you learned to drive yesterday and 10 is professional driver level. Which is why I'm no better than 8, probably more like 7. With everyone else's ratings though, I might move mine up to 14/10.

I love how many great drivers there are on GAF. Wonder where you are driving though... because a high percentage of drivers I meet every day on my way to work are 3 or 4's.

8/10 or so. Great defensive driver, use speed accordingly. Have 2 dumb tickets based of unawareness and I'll check my phone sometimes so I'll knock down two points for those.

Easily a 9. I'm a great driver. I'm confident in what I'm doing, I'm good at judging the appropriate actions in any given situation, I'm decisive when I need to be, I'm good at reading potential situations. I drive safely.

I've docked myself a point as occasionally my speed sneaks over the limit. Whether I can be driving 5mph over the limit and still be considered to be driving safely could be a point of contention though, the speed awareness courses I've been on (2) suggest not so maybe I ought to dock myself more points.

But then I'll add those points back on for being admirably self aware regarding my driving.

More of a safe driver on the road kind of score. Following rules, not being a dick/reckless driver, parking, etc.

I wanna say 6 or 7. I get angry real easily if you're hella slow (this also goes for changing lanes). I also tend to be a real aggressive driver. Parking can still use some work tho.

11/10

I drive like a fucking saint. I follow the law to the best of my ability; I'm the guy that actually sticks to the far left lane when turning left, followed by a signal, full check, and a shift to the furthest right lane one at a time.

100% signalage, even when nobody is around.

Always stick to the speed limit, even the ones for construction zones (with extra when there are actual workers nearby).

I give myself an 11 because in addition to leaving a generous gap in front, I slow down and flash high beams to let others turning left know they have time. I also leave lots of space when waiting at a light whenever I'm next to a parking lot exit, and wave people in in these scenarios all the time.

I love how many great drivers there are on GAF. Wonder where you are driving though... because a high percentage of drivers I meet every day on my way to work are 3 or 4's.

I also only drive once or twice a week. People who drive frequently cut a lot of corners and are also usually fucking miserable. I don't like to skimp on safety, though, as someone that walks, bikes, and busses frequently and often sees how awful driving makes for seriously unsafe streets.

I'm probably a 5. And I'm docking two points off of every post in this thread because everyone thinks they're far better at driving then they really are.

Tommorow on your way to work look at all of those idiots driving around and keep in mind that all of them would also rate themselves between a 7-10 as well.

I have known people that think they're good drivers because they can drive fast and pass people.

I've been driving for +10 years now and I'd probably say seven.

I've been in one accident, no other vehicles were involved. It was my fault, I was driving too fast for the current conditions. Only one ticket, 50 in a 35. Both those happened when I was younger since then I've been more cautious. I can still get somewhat aggressive at times, so I'm far from perfect, hence the seven. I have an hour drive to work, so I get a lot of practice!

3/10.
Been driving very little in past 20 years as I do not own a car, but I haven't had problems when I do drive. (Parallel parking etc is comfortable.)

Not perfect so I'm not a 10. Drive about 11,000 miles a month. Always get the company safety bonus. Driving is my livelihood so I protect my cdl. Can parallel park an 18 wheeler in either direction. Give myself a 9.

Oh yeah that's one of my faults as well. Although I've gotten better at it due to my gf's constant reminder that it's not a race track. Lol.
I'm not that aggressive but I do admit I will fuck with asshole drivers.

In my experience, everyone thinks they're a good driver, and everyone is wrong. You may think you never cut people off, but I guarantee we've all done it and not noticed, because most people don't seem to.

What defines a good driver to me is someone who can notice and admit they've made a mistake, and learn from it

Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?

Mind you, sometimes I'll arrive at my destination without being able to remember a thing about the entire preceeding journey. If that's not super powered 'so good my subconscious can drive entirely for me' 11/10 driving I don't know what is. Shifty eyes.

As true today as it ever was

Anyone who claims to never make a mistake behind the wheel is either a liar or a robot

Oh definitely, while I don't go around cutting people off on the daily I have done it a couple of times. Never on purpose though just that I failed to actually turn back and looked at my mirror and assumed there was no vehicle.

A healthy 7.8 out of 10

Must say it helped a great deal when i downgraded to having half the horses.
Having the ability to open up the POWER is a dangerous/tempting thing.

9/10.

I'm not perfect and I tend to lapse out, but I've only ran one stop sign and have never got into an accident. I consider myself an excellent driver.

Love this thread. OP is this a social experiment because it seems people are definitely falling into the 'I'm better than average' trap.

.5/10. I am an abysmal driver and I hate driving so much. Can't park for shit, get bad road rage, tail people without realizing, easily distracted, etc.

I try to drive as little as possible. Miraculously, I have never been in an accident. Hopefully it stays that way.

I honestly think I'm a 9. I am aware of my surroundings at all times and have excellent reflexes. I do usually speed, but I don't ever get pulled over for it.

Nobody is perfect, so I guess a 9/10.

For one, I am black. And 99% of my driving has been in the south. From Florida to Texas. I've also driven in Nevada and Arizona. I've never been pulled over, never got a ticket, and never have been in a wreck.

I don't do the left lane unless I am going around fucks going under the speed limit (as usual in Dallas).

I compete in a local rally - so I can handle the car better than most and know how to recover in certain situations.

But even then I'm fully aware of my faults as a driver

Probs a 7 - ish

I would give myself a 9.

I'm well aware of my surroundings, often look about 200 yards down the road to anticipate moves and can easily scan whats within my immediate vicinity. Speed wise, it depends on my mood, sometimes I'll give the car a good blast down the motorway, but within reason, theres a time and place etc. I can manoeuvre around quite well out of tricky situations and can pretty much jump into any vehicle and just drive and be comfortable.

I would say being comfortable within your vehicle and knowing your/your vehicle's limitations is half the battle. If you have that down, then you should be able to confidently handle anything else thrown at you.

I recently come out unscathed from a motorway (M6 - go figure...) incident involving a little red hatchback and a lorry carrying a dumpster. They were about 100 yards ahead of me and the little red car was being a bit of a twat, cutting people up, not letting people through etc.
We were coming to a junction which I was about to get off so I check my mirrors and gradually move over into the middle lane to come off the motorway. I immediately noticed that the red car cut up the lorry to come off at the same junction, the lorry emergency braked and tried to swerve out the way, it hit the central reservation and almost toppled over to the other side of the motorway, the driver of the lorry put on opposite lock to stop the lorry from toppling over. This happened right before my eyes and it seemed like slow-motion as I was watching the events unfold - weaving around the debris and slowly applying the brakes (I observed my mirrors beforehand and knew I had loads of space to manoeuvre the car out the way).
