Less than a year until season 2, so it seems. Gotta get that Emmy love.

Should I watch this with my wife? Or will it be too much for her language and sex wise?

Is it similar to Spartacus on Starz or Boardwalk Empire on HBO when it comes to sex and language?

I haven't seen those shows, but I only remember about 3 short lesbian sex scenes.

Language I don't notice because what te fuck ain't nothing wrong with saying fuck

more boardwalk than spartacus

Okay.....hmmmm she loves watching prison shows on MSNBC and she loves watching shows with women leads, so I'm going to check it out and probably watch it with her. And I was just about to cut my Netflix account off this month lol

Did they ever make it clear what Red was convicted of? Obviously, they gave numerous hints and suggested enough, but I don't believe they explicitly revealed what her crime was.

I don't think they did, iirc. Last we saw of her on the outside was when she was drinking with the Russian mob guys and made her husband go in the kitchen to get them something to eat, right?

I think they're building to it, but I'm betting her "associates" end up having her take the fall got something and her jealous husband rats her out.

Maybe that's too predictable but yeah, that's where I'm betting it goes too.

The guy who drives the produce truck was one of the Russians wasn't he? My guess is Red did something to get herself in so that she could act as the insider for the Russian's smuggling business. It was her who told them they needed a bigger, steadier operation, like a school, hospital or prison.

But the thing is Red's not really smuggling in much of worth; just a few specialty ingredients and items for her girls (electric toothbrushes, etc.). Her conflict with Pornstache stems from her insistence on not smuggling in any of the kinds of things the Russian mob might actually be interested in (namely, drugs).

Ultimately, I think the revelation with Red's backstory will be less about "the thing" she did to land herself in prison and more about how she went from being the meek housewife in the flashbacks to the hardcore prison madam that she is when we meet her. In fact, I think that's where the real worth for a lot of the ladies' backstories are, really digging deep into these characters and understanding their motivations.

I don't think so, because in one of her flashbacks, she was surprised that it was the same company delivering to the prison.

How did Little Boo get there? Do prisons have like anti-anxiety dogs and assign it to a good in-mate to take care of? Was this explained and I missed it?

Also, the season finale... Yiiiiiiiiiikes, in a way of course she needed to protect herself but they are not putting Piper into a good light the last couple episodes. I always dislike when I can't relate to a main character.

I can't see how the ending to Season 1 can possibly make you think less of Piper. What the hell else was she supposed to do in that situation?

Inmates training service dogs is pretty common.

I think it's more or less that
she was engaged, then started fucking around with the girl that helped get her in that situation in the first place... if I were Levenstein I'd never speak to her again, that's just one of the fucking shittiest things to ever to do someone... not to say that Jim didn't fuck up a few times like with the radio shit, but still

More so that towards the end I side with Larry and Alex's opinion of Piper more than understand Pipers feelings.

The fight thing is whatever really, but I do feel that they want me as the viewer to feel like Piper has lost it and was not only just defending herself anymore.

It probably doesn't help that I had the same gut wrenching feeling when Piper admitted to Larry about her cheating that I had when I found out an ex was cheating on me. To this day I can't relate to my ex let alone Piper :p

The post I was responding to was obviously referencing the
actual final scene where Piper beats the crap out of Pennsatucky since the poster referenced her needing to defend herself
. So I'm a bit surprised anyone can think badly of her for that.

The relationship stuff is another matter obviously, but the show really goes out of its way to make everyone in her life that's on the outside seem oblivious - not only to her but just to life in general.

They're trying to express that it's more than defending herself, in my opinion. Those last few puches are supposed to represent her frustration with everything going on around her and inability to keep her relationships in control.

Or she's just punchin' a bitch, whatever

Oh yeah I agree, that's what she should have did in that situation. Totally.

You called Larry, Jim, which is fucking hilarious. Might as well just call him the pie fucker because that's his legacy.

He's the shows weak link and I don't mean the character. Hopefully he's out for next season. His parents were great though.

Hahaha, I was calling him Jim too because the night before I started watching OitNB, I had watched American Wedding.

Man, Piefucker decided before anything went down with Alex that it was going to be bad. He couldn't handle her experiences. He's a selfish fucking douchebag and I hate him more than almost any other character on the show.

This may already have been covered, but how much of the show is based on reality? For the first couple of episodes I thought it was supposed to be relatively true to life, but the second half of the season is making me think otherwise.

nahhhhhhhhhhhhh...he was cold as ice when he dropped the truthfact on Piper about Alex. Larry might have been childish using her situation to further his career, but Piper betrayed him

From what I've heard, the set up and characters are mostly drawn from the memoir, but the plotting diverges considerably.

Yep
he loved her and was hoping all that shit was behind them

- NY Mag: OITNB’s Lea DeLaria on the ‘Bulldyke’ Debate, Onscreen Masturbation, and Hitting on Natasha Lyonne
Twenty years ago, Lea Delaria made history when she boldly declared on Arsenio Hall’s late-night prime-time talk show, “I’m a biiiiigggg dyke!” She’s been steadily working since then, her biggest mainstream successes mostly onstage, but she’s enjoying a new level of fame now that she’s playing Big Boo, the butchest inmate at Litchfield on Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black: Now the triple-threat talent (actress, stand-up comic, and Broadway singer) is getting recognized on the street daily by young girls, begging for photos and autographs. Vulture met up with Delaria at the Metropolitan bar in Williamsburg for a beer, to discuss being called a “bulldyke” in the pages of The New Yorker, her out-there masturbation scene, and hitting on Natasha Lyonne.

Just finished it.

Awesome stuff. So much better than Weeds in every conceivable way. Nice work, Jenji.

Natasha Lyonne really stands out to me, probably more than anyone else in the cast. I think her life experiences really add a level of depth to her performance.

There's a special gravitas there, for sure.

Holy shit this show is great.

I can't believe how it ended -- I hope
Chapman didn't kill that crazy fundamentalist loon, but she deserved a good beating for sure. Tucky should have stayed in Psych, holy fuck.

When is the next season?? I can't believe they ended things that way...

Finished it today, thought it was consistently great. There are a lot of characters that I love, but the relationship between Taystee and Poussey is definitely my favorite, every scene with them is beautiful.

The show really excels in having layered characters, everyone has pros and cons to them. Except the woman in charge, I absolutely despise her.

Next season spoilers:
It appears that Pennsatucky is still alive. She was bumped up to a regular cast member for the second season.

Just finished it. What a fantastic show. Wonder what they will do with Miss Claudette's character for Season 2. For some reason I really enjoyed her back story.

Me too. I loved her. It was obvious her story would end in tragedy, but I want to see more of her.

Oh GOOD. Not that I have sympathy for people like her but I was afraid Champan accidentally killed her thus ruining her life

I dunno, I liked this almost as much as I liked House of Cards.

Slightly OT but it's Netflix related -- is Lilyhammer getting another season?

All I wanted was to eat the chicken that is smarter than the other chickens and to absorb its power.

Such an amazing show. Such an amazing cast. So many laughs amidst so much pain. Give it all the awards. I apologize for everything I ever said about you, Jenji.
