I almost forgot to mention: I love Lauren Lapkus, and I was so psyched to see her in this.

Check her out on Comedy Bang Bang. She's awesome.

Oh she's adorable and hilarious.

It's also funny how both Laura Prepon and her "escaped" that terrible Chelsea Handler show to this one.

I have a bad feeling that Netflix is going to shove this into the comedy categories at next year's Emmys.

Which would be so wrong because this isn't even close to being a comedy.

Watched the first two episodes last night. I really enjoy it. Weird seeing Jason Biggs outside of an American Pie movie, though.

I consider this to be the best of the netflix original shows, but noticed in the internet that HoC looks to be more popular. What do people here think?

While HoC had a better main character, I think this one was overall a better season.

It's significantly better than House of Cards.

I just finished the season a few minutes ago. Really enjoyed it. Thank goodness
Pornstache didn't get fired. He's definitely my favorite character.
I also really like Pennatucky. I thought she was hilarious and for some reason I really like her lisp. I'm glad we get a season 2!

It's a black comedy, like Breaking Bad. A boob gets punched. There's an episode about a chicken. "Edging".

Breaking Bad is a black comedy? Seriously?

OITNB has some comedic elements, sure, but it is so clearly at the drama end of the spectrum that I would never consider it a comedy. Not even close.

I wouldn't call it a comedy, but I find myself smiling a lot. It's a dramedy with maybe a 80/20 balance towards drama. That's based on the 4 episodes I've seen anyway. I think it's a perfect blend. The comedy that exists is pretty subtle for the most part, which I really appreciate. Just started watching it and loving it so far.

It's as much a comedy as Walking Dead is.

I started watching House of Cards last weekend. It's pretty good, just not as engrossing as OITNB.

House of Cards does pretty much everything right, and I enjoyed it a lot.

But the characters simply aren't as interesting and richly developed as the ones in OITNB. Kohan & Co. did an incredible job at building a compelling ensemble.

As for the comedy/drama debate, I really don't mean to make this a big argument or anything. I just think Netflix will probably end up submitting it as a comedy in order to prevent it and House of Cards from stepping on each other's toes. And I think that's just kind of wrong, and a gross mischaracterization of what this show really is. Also, it could potentially shove out other excellent shows that are unquestionably comedies.

But TWD is hilariously bad so that doesn't make much sense. STUFF AND THANGS

Some of you all are being weird as hell. The show I watched was pretty clearly a 50/50 mix of comedy and drama. Comparing it to the end of the goddamn world and cooking meth and killing children is weird. It's definitely a pretty lighthearted show, inbetween the harder bouts of serious drama. I think the style used is actually pretty much exactly what Weeds was at first; it's just that Kohan has gotten better at it.

Oh, yes. Breaking Bad is certainly a Black Comedy. Or, at least it was when it began.

"Comedy and Drama are two muscles in the same arm."

It's all relative. Deadwood is the funniest show I've ever seen but I wouldn't call it even a dramedy.

No it's not. A genre isn't determined by your subjective opinion. It's not about what you think is funny, it's about the intention of the creators.

There are moments in which the writers intend to elicit a situational laugh in Orange. Just because you don't personally find certain moments funny does not make it completely dramatic.

Breaking Bad certainly has elements of black comedy, which Gilligan has acknowledged, but I don't think that really makes it a true black comedy. Comedy is an important element of BB, but I wouldn't call it a central element.

Really, the distinction between the two genres only matters come awards season. But that's why I started talking about it, so whatev.

If OITNB weren't created by Jenji Kohan, I don't think many people would be calling it a comedy.

I didn't expect much from this show, the trailers didn't impress me much, but I got hooked after the pilot.
Just finished the season, it was soooo good in so many ways.

Netflix isn't missing a beat with this original content push!

Just finished today. Great show so far, looking forward to the new season. I loved the cast of characters and the uniqueness of the setup, and had no idea it was based on an actual memoir until recently. The truth really is stranger than fiction.

EDIT: I fucking KNEW yoga jones sounded familiar.

Just finished season one, what a fantastic show.

Between this and House of Cards I am loving the Netflix model (not so much for Arrested Development)

Now to find a new series to watch

This just means you haven't watched Hemlock Grove yet.

OITNB is most definitely a comedy as much as it is a drama. I don't even see how this is even an argument. Even the facebook updates for the show consist of nothing but 'funny quotes'

I liked Hemlock Grove. Not near the level of this or Spacey's show, but a fun watch.

Did anyone else think that pie fucker's parents didn't like Piper? I think he purposely gets her sent to prison to split them up.

How crazy is it that two full seasons will have aired before this show even has its first crack at the Emmys?
I think it should win something. I think its a real portrayal of prison.

He is a very interesting character. He'll always be Nick Sabotka to me.

What I don't understand is... How did they managed to
keep him from knowing Daya charged him with rape?

Isn't it
rape no matter what? She technically can't consent as a prisoner, right?

I've been avoiding this thread, until I'd finished the whole season. And now that I have, I'm really, weirdly, excited to post here. I loved this show. I thought that it was at least as funny as it was dramatic and compelling. A lot of it was subtle humor, but it cracked me up: Piper, asking "when is he going to get his shit together" in reference to her brother living in the woods, while talking to Larry on a payphone in prison, cracked me up.

Similarly, when Piper fell on the wet floor that Crazy Eyes was mopping, and Crazy Eyes tells her "there use to be a sign that said 'CAUTION, Wet Floor,' it really told people what was going on," I laughed out loud.

Its little things, but it's exactly my sense of humor. I'm so glad there's going to be a second seasons. I NEED to know what's going to happen with
Pennsatucky
.

True, and they mention that. But
he wouldn't be so much in love with Daya if he knew she claimed he raped her.

Well, I don't think she claimed as much as
it's just that he raped her. She didn't have to say anything, right? They got caught in the act.

Yeah.
Initially, the plan was to claim forcible rape: Daya was going to have sex with him and then go to the CO's and get a rape kit done, which would show he'd had sex with her. When he used a condom, they had to change the plan: they set it up so he'd get caught in the act. This way, Daya didn't say, or have to say, anything to anyone.

So are we talking Spring 2014? Because that would be swell.

Yup. For Emmy eligibility, you need to air a specific amount of episodes during a certain amount of time, but you're only technically supposed to judge the series based off of the submitted episode.

My guess is that they swap when they air Hemlock Grove with Orange with Sense8 (what a stupid fucking dumb title) in the late fall. Maybe have Arrested Season 5 as a mid-to-late fall show, too, if they can get it going in time.

Just an aside:

I signed up for Netflix's free trial specifically to watch Orange is the New Black, but now that I've finished it, I decided to check out what else they have to stream...

...good LORD how does this service hold on to ANY subscribers??? Their streaming library is abysmal. I've tried about 6 - 7 different movies at this point and NONE of them are available.

Their anime/cartoon selection is surprisingly robust, but that's the only compliment I can really give.

I loved OitNB, and I would like to keep the service, but man...this selection ain't worth 8 bucks a month.

Don't use Netflix to say "I want to watch *insert movie*, let's see if they have it". Look at the library and choose. Their movie library has gotten pretty mad in the past few years.

Although, I think their TV library is stellar.

My Netflix viewing consists almost entirely of TV shows.
