Owlboy |OT| It's A Real Hoot!

Finished the game, slightly annoyingly missed the third of those disc things though and I'd left the easiest to reach altar to slot it into as well, ah well.

Solid 8.5/10 is my current gut reaction to this title, looks lovely, plays well with my only real control gripes being the messy grabbing situations that can occur at times.

That one hug scene man, cutting onions in here.

Finished it. This is my game of the year. Well, either this or Forza Horizon 3. Are there any side quests I may have missed? I got all the trinkets from the shop but didn't collect all the big coins/discs.

Started it last night and finished the first dungeon. The game is absolutely gorgeous, and I love its characters and characterisation. The presentation is just infinitely likeable. The dungeon itself was a little simple, but it felt like the designer understood what made a good dungeon. I can't wait to see where it scales up to, because I'm fully expecting well-integrated puzzles at this point. Moving around in the game feels good, and I can see the moveset can grow into some cool throwing, spinning, catching and shooting combos.

I've got one or two things though that I'm not sure about. The camera panning can be a little slow at times, and already made me fly into a flock of off-screen enemies once. I really hope that isn't going to be a thing I have to worry about. The other thing is the food and coins. I don't know what all the different types of food do, or if they even make a difference. Would have been nice to have gotten an in-game explanation for it. As for the coins, I notice I'm missing large quantities of them, in spite of having made an effort to seek them out. Not sure if I'm missing a type of coins-source, or if I'm just bad at finding them.

Thus far the game's closest comparison is to a nicer version of Aquaria, which is another game I enjoyed. Can't wait to dig into it further.

Food is simple: they just restore health and I think all in the same amount. You can eat more after your life bar is full, that gives you a little purple 'extra' bar. You also move/dash faster when at full health.

Coins can be hidden well sometimes, in fake walls even. You can get hidden chests by killing all enemies on screen too.

I use a software called 'borderless gaming' https://github.com/Codeusa/Borderless-Gaming

Works like a charm, very crisp on my 1080p monitor.
I got an e-mail from the developer yesterday after telling them about the problem. They just read about it on reddit and are working on a fix. They somehow chose to use linear filtering instead of nearest neighbour scaling.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try that, because I really want to start playing this game, non-blurry.

/edit: works when setting my display's resolution to 1920x1080 in Windows:

Glorious!

Ok, I've now beat the game and got all 3 golden disks (achievement didn't unlock but seemingly that's a common glitch).

What else is there to do apart from collecting all coins?
What do you get for beating the cannon mini game?
What is this I heard about a puzzle with drums?

As a pixel artist, it's kind of shocking how the game just continuously keeps surprising me with the art assets. They quality is incredibly high, and the size and animation of these assets seem like they didn't demand compromises. This is the first time I've seen an indie game that can stand tall next to the retro juggernauts of old in the eyes of a purist like me.

The food seems simple enough then, and I can work wall-hugging into my routine. Thanks!

Kind of wondering the same thing. I've given it like 20 tries, and it's become clear that I'll never be able to pull it off. My brain can't handle those controls, and I get PTSD flashes from Sonic 06's Mach Speed sections. It's perhaps an unfair comparison, since this isn't broken, but it just feels the same. At least it's seemingly optional.

There is a hidden room in the 3 disc-unlock area. Find it, it's... interesting.

Amazing game that I will surely replay in a few years. The love and care put into this game are mindblowing. Most likely the best looking long pixel art game ever.

Playthrough was about 11 hours with a bit of searching around.

i was so sure there was
an alternate ending after you explored that room. ;-;

Your thoughts on it?
I kinda feel that SBH doesn't know WHY this game was in development hell for 9 years, cuz to me it sure as heck wasn't to get the pixel art perfected.
Heck Freedom Planet was released in 2014 and it was in development for what 2-3 years?

One thing I'll say though is that the way the game is it really does feel like something that would've been released by 2010/2011. Maybe reception for the game would've been far different had it released then.

I pretty much agree with him, saying that as someone who enjoyed the game a whole lot, waited for it a while and got the physical edition. No regret for any of those of course.

But the game does feel that regardless of the excellent attention to detail and pixel art, there are some gaps in the design here and there which become only more glaring as you go through. Some I've pointed out myself earlier in this thread for instance with the way the shop is designed.

I think there's nothing inherently broken but hopefully they can refine their design strategy for their next big project. It might be only gripes when isolated but they add up pretty quickly so it would be a shame

I finished that and you get i believe 250 coins for hitting all the hoops. Which goes towards getting all of buccanary's coins. I spent 1hr 15min grinding it though. Took me awhile not my proudest evening.

I agree with most of it unfortunately.

Fair enough, to me though it seemed the team either intended for the game to be longer OR for there to be a sequel that explains some of the plot points.
It really does feel like it would've been a game fit for the 2010/2011 indie game scene era but nowadays it'd feel outdated.
Still I enjoy the game despite its issues and would go back to play it at any time.

I agree with the Super Bunny Hop review (it could be 5 minutes shorter and not lose anything though) -- the game is good, it's beautiful, it's great to listen to, the story is good, the characters are good, but it's just not quite there. The gameplay, the UI, and level design are surprisingly rough around the edges... and the XNA limitations with respect to just the Steam Overlay being generally iffy, the controller support being kinda weird, etc... It's just ho-hum. Like, shooting never quite seems satisfying, puzzles never really go the extra mile. The stealth doesn't quite work. World navigation is fine, but never great. The only time it really felt like a true joy to play was after getting the 100% cape, and by then the game is over.

This makes it sound like I didn't like the game. I did. I played it for 11 hours (8 hours game, 3 hours cannon minigame . . .) over two days and 100%ed it across the board. I'm glad to have played it. But there's an unmistakable feeling of it being so close but not quite.

The Boguins are spectacular.

Asking the usual question: how long is long when the engineer buddy tells me "you won't be able to come back for a long time"?

Edit: Okay, it was already the final boss. Too short!

As this screenshot shows, the blurryness is still not fixed in the latest non-beta build. It sould be fixed on the beta-build, but on my Surface Pro 4 it's not.

In this reddit topic, in which developer hernriksand takes part and is looking for solutions, it seems to me they're struggling to find a solution that works for everyone.

Maybe some bright minds from here can step in and help them out? To me it seems as simple as full screen letterboxing a properly, nearest neighbor multiplied (2x, 3x, 4x, etc.), 1280x720 image to whatever resolution a user is running.

The soundtrack in this is god-tier. Great characters, amazing art and animation, fun (if shallow) core mechanics.

Beautiful game, one of the best I've played this year.

edit: terrible idea to keep the
eternal sanctuary
as a post-game location, it reveals background story that would've fit in totally well with the main game.

True, could've worked this into the main storyline even before the final dungeon. But then,
why try to stop Solus when he tries to break the loop?

I'm stuck on this boss where I have to keep two torches lit. Is this a joke? Am I missing something? It's needlessly hard.

Edit: bit of googling gave me the answer, I think

Easier if you drop your ally and hit it with Otus' spin attack in the air. Goes farther and you dont have to worry about accuracy.

You need to pick the wrench up and fly around with it manually.

Same for me.
The Super Bunny Hop review mentions the game isn't doing anything new but the problems you mentionned are really what keeps this game from being a classic. You can argue Hyper Light Drifter didn't do anything new either, but it excels in everything it tries to accomplish.

Indiebox physical edition still hasn't shipped for me, and the page is now dead on their website.

Edit: Shipped a few hours after making this post. . . whoo

Just got this and played for a few hours, loving it. Had to configure a control setup that worked for me via Joytokey but I'm playin with a controller in one hand and mouse in the other and it's working fine.

I noticed that there was this blue and gold coin or gem in one of the first dungeons after getting the 2nd gunman. I'm assuming these are optional treasures?

Just finished this.

I'm pretty surprised how good the reviews are for this. Sure, the pixel art is fantastic looking, animations and soundtrack are god-tier and the characters are cute.

But... it was just so damn boring. All the "dungeons" were linear and very basic. The puzzles took zero thought and the combat is pretty annoying at times. There are very few upgrades you receive. Everything just felt so hollow...

The
pirate ship
area with the
poison gas
? What a tedious and annoying level. Why make the
pipes totally dark
? What does that really add other than frustration?

Also... the last area was so lazy.
I was expecting a big dungeon where you would have to use the abilities of all of your companions to succeed. But no, all the developer did was remove the owl's ability to fly and make you walk through a boring ass set of Sonic inspired elevators for 30 minutes and annoying platforming which would have been a lot better with flight. Why do this?!

ZzzzzzzZZZZZZzzzzzzzz

Got around to playing and finishing this game.

I found it to be an alright game, it definetely has it's moments of greatness, but falls shorts in many other aspects

Positive:

Amazing characters both in personality and design. Alphonse is best bro though.
The music score was fantastic.
The gameplay was also pleasant, felt like playing a twin stick shooter. Lot's of mobility and aiming.
Some nicely designed dungeons with some nice variety in gameplay every now and then (Stealth)

Negatives:

Story falls off second half
Final Boss too easy, pretty anticlimatic
Stiffy controls, nothing too bad but not as fluid as it could be
Otus felt too sluggish flying thus having to spam roll to get anywhere quick
Ending felt a bit rushed and unfinished

Final Thoughts

Definetely up there with Ori and the Blind Forest as one of the best metroidvaniaish type games of this generation. Absolutely gorgeous game held back by questionable design choices that makes sense seeing how this games development was troubled.
Kinda hope to see a sequel sometime in the future after you guys take a long break from Owlboy.

If I had to give it a score, a respectable 7.5/10

Okay, so I have recently started this game and got through the "Prologue" or first dungeon. When exactly does this game autosave? I'm not seeing any manual options, but I don't want to quit during exploring to return to an unsavory surprise.

Edit: Nevermind. I completed the game. Gorgeous visuals, but overall it was simply okay. The story and level design was "kinda there" rather than enjoyable throughout. The former especially attempts to evoke an intrigue that it never earns. In a way, a bit of a disappointment, but it's worth a deep sale price for the visuals alone in my book.

Question: Has anybody been getting malware warnings from launching the game?

When I launch the game, I get a warning from Zemana Antimalware and it quarantines the executable as a malware. It's the only game on Steam it does it for, and it only started doing it recently (I've been playing today and yesterday with no problems). It's probably nothing, just Zemana being overly cautious, but I wanted to make sure.

Hm, I never got anything from Malwarebytes or Windows Defender.

For a game so gorgeous and charming, I find this is constantly infuriating me and making me go "This isn't fun at all." It's like they couldn't nail down core mechanics that were consistently interesting, so they keep welding on new twists (which are often unintuitive and poorly signalled). In Inside, I'd call this wonderful bespoke design, but here it's generally just incredibly frustrating.
