Owners of both consoles: Does Xbone OS makes you prefer it over PS4?

Yep, I've always preferred Xbox's OS over Playstation, this gen hasn't changed that preference so far. Microsoft has done some dumbfounding things but the way they update the dashboard every month is superb.

I originally bought an X1 expecting the X1 UI to blow me away. In fact, I was kind of on the fence about even getting an X1, but the videos and articles about the UI made it look incredible. And..eh. There are things about the UI that I do find innovative and really interesting. But on the whole, I actually find the UI to be clunky and too busy (it has more cases of lag and slow down too). And install times are much worse than PS4. I also feel like there are little things that are annoying to navigate to.

PS4 on the other hand is quick and efficient and easy to navigate. It's a much smoother experience and does what I need it to do (and while you could argue it's kind of vanilla and boring, I actually like the sleek look. I just wish they offered wallpaper or different background colors). So I'm actually surprised that I ended up preferring PS4's UI over it. But I do. I'm just not a fan of the Windows 8 tiles either. I will give MS major props though, as I think they have been fixing a lot of the mistakes of the UI. They seem to be more active with changing the UI and overall experience.

And thing is, MS has always been much better at evolving their UI. So I actually think in a year or two, the X1 UI is going to be insanely impressive. But I'm not a big fan of it in its current form.

Curious, how is it unstable?

I never noticed instability, just slowness or lag. Never experienced a crash. That may be a combination of the OS and being the "weaker hardware".

Also, stability patches of the PS4 may be needed after all, so Sony might not just be whistling into the wind. It crashed on me once while playing Ghosts (which according to Google, it's not that uncommon.) I think it's more of the apps running in the background while gaming, I close every app now.

None of my games crashed actually, at least not that I can remember right now. But got some problems like:

-Turn on the console and get a problem connecting with friends, that I could only solve after rebooting it. (happened just once)

-Turn on the console that was in standby, and then I could not load any app, neither the one that was on the suspend/resume mode - that was guacamelee. Could only solve after turning the system off at energy saving mode and turn it on again. (happened 2 times if I remember correctly).

-After suspending a game and trying to do something else on the mean time, the system pratically frozed... like, I could still move the "cursor" over the apps but could not access anything for like 4 minutes, till it came back working properly again. (happened a few times, but its not extremely frequent)

Other then that the system is amazing!

I dusted off my XB1 after months and was swarmed with "XBOX ONE PREVIEW!" and like 10 surveys about the UI. They even made silly quests/missions about testing out UI elements that are still in beta.

Haven't seen anything like that from Sony.

It's the "M$". Don't use "M$" ever. It'll get you killed.

I don't really like either actually, mainly because of their layouts and lack of user customisation. At least they are faster than last generation.

X1 took a backstep with their store front though. The tiles don't show enough and all I ever see is TITANFALL, COD, XBOX MUSIC, SPORTS and I need to browse a bit to find anything I care about.
PSN Store is pretty much the same, only lightning fast.

I liked the PS4 OS initially, but as I've downloaded more and more games for it, I find it a bit of a mess. I can only see that getting worse too unless Sony make some changes.

The One OS is much more attractive, not just to me, but to most of the people who come over and play on my consoles. It also has a much better feature set at present.

If I had to pick one over the other, it'd def be the One.

How do you know when your xbone is in suspend resume mode ?

I feel like when I turn my xbone and ps4 in standyby they boot up about the same time.

Its not a mode. As soon as you don't quit a game but "leave" it, its suspended automatically.

Unless you start another game, its stays suspended until you resume it. Even if you turn the console off.

Assuming you have it in Instant On mode of course

Yikes. I don't think I've ran into those.

Have you had any similar issue like those with the PS4?

There are plenty of reasons why an OS can make you prefer playing games on one machine over another.

I can be watching TV and still receive a game invite from friends, and start playing due to that.
I can actually see when friends come online, because it bothers to tell me.
Twitch broadcasts don't embed the damn UI into the stream.
Can opt for Skype calls instead of party chat, so I can talk to my brothers even when they're not on their consoles (one doesn't even own an Xbox One yet).
Can snap various apps to the side, so if I'm waiting for a show to start, I can still be playing meanwhile.
Recording shit actually works reliably.

I bought my PS4 with the assumption that I'd be purchasing console multiplats (that don't have a PC version) for it due to the superior specs. These days though, I'm hesitant to do so, as the Xbox has integrated itself so well in my setup, that playing anything on the PS4 feel extremely segregated from everything else I do. Now unless the port is a disaster (and 900p vs 1080p is not a disaster to me) on Xbox One, I'm probably going to end up buying that version instead.

Good points, though personally recording has been fine for me (when I rarely use it) and yeah I agree Friend online notification is a weird omission with the PS4.
Most of the other points, while make perfect sense, feel more subjective to me.
Where I game, I don't watch TV, so have no benefit there (and my alternative is simply my phone to get PS notifications from if I'm doing something else).

Good points however, if you have a similar set up to you, I can see why the X1 offers perhaps a better experience, at least if you consider things outside of gaming.

The only thing good about the Xbone OS is suspend/resume. Great as that is, it's still not enough for me to prefer it over the PS4's minimalist UI. I also like taking screenshots. =P

Everything else about the Xbone OS is fucking terrible though. It's confusing as hell, especially if you're like me and unplugged your Kinect. I absolutely loathe everything about it. Catastrophic design failure.

Now that PS4 has preloading that pretty much seals the deal for OS features. I can actually use that with every game, whereas suspend/resume only works for 100% offline single player games. I do hate how I can't just hold the PS button to zip right to the details whenever a notification pops, but eh. Not a dealbreaker.
They really need to add that though.

Xbones is hot garbage, its a nightmare trying to play MP games on the thing as something as simple as turning on player 2 takes us days to get to work.

Plus its all cluttered and looks like shit and its hard to find what you are looking for.

And then of course....I would never buy a shittier version of a game because of the UI. That has scapegoat written all over it.

Nope the xbox one os is terrible, it's gotten better but it doesn't hold a candle to how good the ps4 os is.

I don't get how Microsoft has dropped the ball on the os compared to even the 360.

This. I have Kinect, but I stopped using it because I live in an apartment. After awhile my Wife got really irritated at me saying the same commands over and over. She basically said "Isn't that what the controller is for?". I conceded and boxed up the Kinect. It's definitely not as straight forward as the PS4 OS, but it does have more features.

Can't say it makes me want to play on the Xbox more though. We got it for exclusives primarily and Kinect (ironically).

I hate the XB1 OS. 360 pre-tiles was the best. The whole tiles things sucks ass imo.

And it's not like the PS4 os is the shit, either. It's serviceable which is more than I can say for the PS3 XMB.

I hope MS tosses all the tiles crap and figures something else out.

Meanwhile, every month MS adds shit back in they inexplicably removed from 360. Knuckleheads...

Yikes. I don't think I've ran into those.

Have you had any similar issue like those with the PS4?

Thank god no! In terms of stability the PS4 is trully rocking here! lol
I still prefer the Xone OS though, but yeah, I've ran into some really strange problems... =/

I definitely prefer the Xbox one OS over the PS4's. But, I still buy most of my games on PlayStation because of superior multiplats. The X1 os is just cleaner and had better features plus Kinect integration. I had the endless scrolling to the right to play games on the ps4. IThe ps4 os is speedier and not as sluggish...

Problem with the PS4 OS is it doesn't scale very well. If you have hundreds of friends and hundreds of games it's a nightmare.

I will never understand why some of you are so eager on so many os features.
If i want a OS that does loads of stuff ill turn on my PC.
I might watch a TV show or two but otherwise im ingame 99.9% and aslong as Party Chat is working and there are no OS breaking bugs i barely even notice the OS.

Not at all. Everything that XB1 OS can do that PS4 OS can't (except for suspend resume) is stuff I have yet to find any use of for myself.

And as much as I appreciate suspend/resume and want it on PS4, I appreciate screenshot functionality much more, and XB1 doesn't have that.

I also prefer the organization of functionality on the PS4 OS over the XB1's.

if anything it makes me hate the damn thing.

This
to do the most simple tasks like you could at a button press on the 360 it takes a fucking age and whoever thought of the stupid game party system should be taken outside and shot

Not really a fan of the ps4 os either but at least its quick

Everybody has different taste but the UI and OS system features is something i think Sony didn't take into account with former 360 owners moving to PS4. 360 owners are use to everything being connected seamlessly and having a fancy dashboard. Something the XB1 takes even further. I can image many of them buying a PS4 only to wonder what the fuck it is they're looking at and navigating. I mean the current PS4 UI is pretty half assed and bare bones. The XB1 and PS4 has a few of the same features, but MS implemented them much better. Sony can't let their UI stay in the state it's in when they're number 1 in sales and 360 owners continue to migrate to the console. People are going to start expecting more and realising the XB1 does everything better with their OS.

And apps. The XB1 has hundreds of apps. What's going to happen when more developers start making apps like ReddX? Sony better wake up.

I liked the Xbox dash before Metro. This mess pisses me off but Kinect makes it much better. PS4 dash is kind of peculiar as well, but maybe slightly more navigable?

I'm amazed by the number of people talking about how hard it is to find stuff on Xbox One.

Even if you don't use pins all your games and apps are in "My games and apps" which has a tile on the main page as soon as you console boots.

A press of the menu button gives you the option for going to the settings.

How much easier do you want it to be?

At least your wife didn't do what mine started doing. After she got annoyed of me shouting commands over time, she would start shouting commands at random times just to mess with me or to prevent me from turning it off with voice because by then she had learned them all.

It's a good thing that for whatever reason neither system really understands her with much accuracy most of the time.

I know I'm in the minority, but having the TV TV TV right there with all my games (digital of course) all on one input with the Xbox One has made it my go to system of choice. My PS4 has pretty much been a TLOU machine...
But I wouldn't say it's because of the OS.

Full disclosure: most of my friends are Xbox ecosystem, so that has some sway too.

How do you know when your xbone is in suspend resume mode ?

I feel like when I turn my xbone and ps4 in standyby they boot up about the same time.

You need to activate "resume games quickly" in the power and start up options. If your console is in instant on mode your xbox will save game state and let you pick up from the pause screen.

Having both systems:

XB1 Pros: Better Apps & integration. (NFL, GoPro, YouTube etc.) Snap. The web browsing experience is just much more beautiful than the PS4.

XB1 Cons: Can feel slow at times and the organization of the game strore still feels overly curated and hard to find things I want. Main launch page right now is not really customizable. I don't understand why. Screw uniformity, I want to put things where I want them with custom skins. Bring back what made people love Windows before Win8 - customization.

PS4 Pros: Quick and light. (not a long list, but this is really important in an OS!) Install times are good.

PS4 Cons: Scrolling left to right to find all your stuff is a pain and I find Party/Chat in general is subpar compared to XB1. Manually have to update your trophies? (why is this a thing?) Web browser is ugly and shimmery for some reason.

My final verdict: Both OS' suck right now and you can tell they were rushed to market. We'll see in a year or two.

Yea, I'm not trying to claim that these things aren't subjective... but to those who it matters to, it can end up mattering a lot. Being able to receive invitations/notifications is a pretty big deal to me, as that'll often be the only reason I end up playing something in the first place.

I also get notifications from my phone via smartglass. I'd do the same for Playstation stuff, but I have a Windows Phone, and Sony isn't bothered to put a Playstation app out for it. :(

I will never understand why some of you are so eager on so many os features.

I might watch a TV show or two but otherwise im ingame 99.9% and aslong as Party Chat is working and there are no OS breaking bugs i barely even notice the OS.

It just depends on your gaming habits I guess. For me, I want my consoles to do absolutely everything that can be expected from its specs. You mention party chat, but last gen even that wasn't available across all platforms. Some people then couldn't see why we'd consider it such a big deal at the time, whilst for others it was basically a deal breaker.

I'd also actually say that for me the Xbox One seems to be superior to the PC when it comes to integrating gaming with other activities. When I'm playing games on PC, someone Skyping me is far less likely to get an answer, because Skype and Steam have no idea about each other, and so have no convenient way to hand me over. PC's are generally great at multitasking, but its all generic, and not specifically tailored towards recreational activities like the Xbox is.

It seems like the general consensus is that if all you primarily do with a console is turn it on, play a game, and turn it off when you're done, the PS4 is perfect for you, but if you do a little bit of everything, the XB1 tends to fare much better.

I care about the games first and foremost, so no.
If I'm playing a game I don't bother watching TV, it doesn't matter to me.
I don't check friends achievements because quite frankly, I don't care to know.
I find the PS4 to have an easier and cleaner UI, and damn the games install so much faster.

The two features I love most about my X1 are voice commands, and the ability for Kinect to scan those funky bar codes. Sure as hell beats typing a 16 digit redemption code!

Honest question here to the XB1 owners: If you are not interested in TV features at all, only gaming. Wich ones make you feel that are better on the XB1? Because Remote Play, Using any Headset in the controller, save to USB, and Soon remote Share are pretty great features.
I don't use any of the tv features on xbone, and don't have a Ps4 yet, but I love how they are making the UI very social oriented, how Kinect voice controls makes every other electronic device I've used feels like it's from an ancient era. I love snapping things while I play, and they are making that feature more useful every month. I love how the game is always ready when I turn the console on, and I love that I can set an online match, go to another app and get notified when the match is ready.

As for the Ps4 features you mentioned, none are to compelling to me. Remote play is useless. I don't want to play my games with crippled quality and gameplay experience. As using any headset, I just need one to chat, and want it to be as unobtrusive as possible. I also prefer having all my saves on the cloud and available on any console I log in rather than managing USB sticks. Share play is cool though, but it being through Ps now instead of running locally also diminishes its value to me.

I don't know what the OP is talking about, makes me feel like I'm reading an ad for xbone. I prefer the PS4 UI since I value simplicity. I just want to turn it on and play my game, I don't need any of that other junk.

Pretty much. Unless it's turn it on, play a game, turn it off... and then later turn it on again, play the same game, turn it off. Then the Xbox One fares better again.

The two features I love most about my X1 are voice commands, and the ability for Kinect to scan those funky bar codes. Sure as hell beats typing a 16 digit redemption code!

I was so happy for this... and then other than the Day One achievement that I got with the console, I've had nothing else to actually scan... still had to type the damn code in when it came to getting the Destiny beta.

I love the W8 OS on my phone and using it on a computer, but the Xbone OS just feels cumbersome with a controller or with Kinect. I don't feel like it's easy to find anything I'm looking for.

PS4's OS on the other hand, does have its issues, but I like it a lot. Games are spread all over the place which makes it a pain to scroll through, but other than that it's one of my favorite console OS' next to the XMB and the bubbles on Vita.

Sony does need to add the ability to create your own layout. Seems like it just puts your most recently used games/apps up front.

If prefer to have my games grouped together.

Depends what it is you do. TV, snapping, video chatting etc, then obviously Xbox One is better since the PS4 mostly lacks this functionality, but for general speed (installing, updating, loading etc), screenshots, web browsing etc, the PS4 is better and generally much quicker.

Hundreds of apps? Dude, what? There's like 40, lol. And that includes things like the Blu-Ray Player and CD Player.
