Only watched the first one ... was decent until about half-way through when it went all stupid with the super-natural vibe. Will pass on this one thanks.

This makes no sense to me... the entire movie had supernatural vibe...

the concept of the paranormal is supernatural in itself... what exactly did you expect?

I can recommend watching The Conjuring too. It's a fine movie.

But I absolutely love Paranormal Activity. The 4th one disappointed me but I saw Tokyo Nights this week and it were good. Loved the Japanese setting.

I'm fine with The Marked Ones. It's a breath of fresh air while we wait for PA5. This one looks different as it should be but it didn't really scream "horror" until the last few seconds of the trailer.

It does look more promising than PA4 though.

My ranking:
1. Paranormal Activity
2. Paranormal Activity 3
3. Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Nights
4. Paranormal Activity 2
5. Paranormal Activity 4

I was shown clips of the first one when I doubted that it was scary. At least with slasher flicks it's about chases and shit and Saw was gory, but what is the appeal of a film where the premise is a ghost in the house? I'm obviously missing something by not watching them, but I don't see how it can possibly provide however many films worth of story.

Normal horror stuff does nothing for me, but pa1 freaked me the fuck out. It's probably something to do with how much is left to your own imagination.

The first half brought a genuine sense of unease with all of the occurances but the explanation kind of ruined it, especially when we had the father going into the other world to look for his son it just felt silly i.e. it was not scary.

Paranormal Activities: Activity n' Da Hood.

"That shit was scary dawg."

But seriously to many things being seen makes for a not scary movie.

That was... different.

Gave me End of Watch and Chronicle vibes. Hmm...

I was going to say it reminded me of End of Watch, though it's clearly a different genre. I would love to see a 'found footage' film with cops/supernatural stuff, in the style of "X-Cops" from The X-Files, one of my favorite later seasons episode.

Best episode of x-files hands down.

Somehow, I've felt all the PA movies are watchable and even enjoyable. The first is the best, but I actually felt the next best would be the fourth one, which seems to go against what everyone else in this thread says, haha

Saw kind of restarted this. The Saw movies were incredibly cheap to make and always did really well during Halloween. The profit they made with the first one was almost enough to pay for every sequel. Then PA come out costing even less than Saw and making even more money. PA took over Saw´s place as the annual Halloween horror franchise until this year where they took a break.
As they are so cheap and easy to make, that allows them to do quick spin-offs directed specially to specific markets like PA : Tokyo Nights for Asia and this last one for Latin markets.

Presumably, Paranormal Activity has an even lower budget than Saw? Aren't these movies all shot on shit cameras in that "found footage" style?

That has absolutely no bearing on the supernatural aspect of the film. The entire film is based around supernatural phenomena. The "reveal" while certainly underwhelming does not account for the sole supernatural element of the film however, which is why your comment made no sense when you address how the "supernatural vibe" turned you off. It was present through out the entire film.

I'm so confused, and I think you're confused too.

What you're describing isn't Paranormal Activity, but Insidious. O_o

He isn't even talking about Paranormal Activity. Sounds more like Insidious.

Well, fuck, there goes my sleep tonight. Some proper genuinely scary moments in there, I really did jump at some parts. A brilliant film overall, though.
Glad to know you enjoyed it.

Yes, the PA movies are incredibly cheap. The 4th was the most expensive with a budget of 5 Million and it made something like 150 Million Worldwide. The last Saw at 20M was more expensive than the whole PA franchise so far.

This is your problem right here. PA does nothing from clips, especially the first one. The entire reason it works is because it builds insane levels of tension over lengthy periods of time. You can't just watch a few clips of the actual scares and expect to understand the appeal. When you see it in a theater, as soon as night falls the theater goes DEAD SILENT because people know something is about to go down and everyone is just holding their breath waiting for it to happen. It's incredible. The 3rd movie was the first one I saw in theaters and it was probably the most intense movie going experience I've ever had.

Yeah, that's Insidious, not Paranormal Activity. Same creative team, different franchise. For what it's worth I agree with you 100% though, movie was really good until the last ~10 minutes when it just went off the rails and turned into a total joke.

That looks... okay.

I don't know why I keep seeing these on release night. I adored the first one. Hated the second. Liked the third. Hated the fourth one the most. It's pretty telling that the Bad Grandpa movie was given this movie's slot as well.

I want to love you again, Paranormal Activity. Give me a reason.

So judging from the trailer, they go to a lady's apartment who was killed below one of the main character's apartments. In it they find all sorts of demon-shit and from there they begin their adventure of discovery.

Later in the trailer, Ali (the daughter from PA2) shows up and talks about what is going on. She seems a little more somber than usual, even given that her entire family has been killed.

My guess? Martine (the help\maid\whatever) was the one who was living under the main character's apartment and was killed by the demon. Either Ali was living with her (a little unlikely) or was in town for the funeral.

I love these movies, mainly for the 'lore' if you could call it that. It's the same reason I love the Saw movies. PA4 had pretty much zero story and I would go as far as to say that I actively disliked it. But this new one...looks like we're actually going to get some story progression. I'm excited.

This looks so stupid and I can't fuckin' wait. The most fun you can have in a theater is a packed Paranormal Activity midnight premiere. Not having one this year kind of burns, but this looks enjoyable as fuck.

This looks so bad that i must watch it. Looking foward to PA5 too, just hope it does not suck as much as PA4.

4 was terrible, this is hopefully less terrible. i hate myself for still watching these...i hope Insidious 2 turned out better

The thing is, I view paranormal films that are intended to scare/freak you out in the same way as I do paranormal documentaries and stories. It's not real, and it never could be, so there's no fear at all. Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Nutters with chainsaws in a remote area would be scary in real life, so there's that aspect of it. Ghosts, possessions, and all that crap? It's Scooby Doo. I don't immerse myself in that universe, because it's presented as our own.

Perhaps I'm so tired of the perpetual myths and stories in real life that it's caused me to be intolerant of it in any form of media when it's presented as the main point. There are ghosts in things like Harry Potter, but that universe is fundamentally different to ours, and the ghosts aren't trying to scare people.

I keep watching them in the vain hope they recapture the pant soiling experience of the first movie...
