Patrick Klepek is joining Kotaku

Does "clickbait" just mean "stuff I don't like" now?

No it means " LOOK AT THIS CRAZY HEADLINE YOU JUST GOTTA CLICK!". It's what a gawker site makes the vast majority of their money off of. Which is why tottilo and jshier support shit written by Patricia Hernandez and that dude that writes about how K-RAZY Japan is.

Hopefully kotakus readers treat him better than giantbombs community. The pathetic behavior from certain giantbomb readers against Patrick should make any fan of the site feel ashamed.

^ This. It's that bullshit that turns (I assume) a significant portion of informed readership away. I guess you just have to weigh the good and bad, like having to deal with GB's wrestling bullshit. Haha.

Why in the world would I feel ashamed that some assholes read the same website I do?

Agreed. Cannot blame him at all for wanting to move on from that part of it.

This is a big get for Kotaku, and it seems like a good fit, too. They've been trending upwards in terms of their quality (Schreier has been a big part of that), and getting Patrick on definitely helps that. They really just need a redesign that's more user friendly and can keep some of the fluff out of the way (even if it still needs to be there in some form).

Jason Schreier just got a promotion too. He is now Kotaku's News Editor. Congrats to the Kotaku team.

Well earned. Press Sneak Fuck is doing well for himself.

Remains to be seen. Kotaku doesn't really do video/audio, though it's experimented in the past. It's not what I was hired for, but that doesn't mean we won't leverage it a bit. We'll have to wait and see. I've had some podcast ideas I've been kicking around for a while, though none of them really involve starting another "whatcha been playing" equivalent. Places like the Bombcast already do that so well.

I know that podcasting isn't part of Kotaku's forte right now, but I'd love to hear a podcast with you, Jason and Stephen on it. There's definitely room for more gaming podcasts as long as there's an interesting idea behind it.

I'm always really happy when people get new jobs, change is scary, but exciting

I still don't like kotaku, and GB is pretty much the only video game site I read. I try to even stay away from gaming neogaf, I only searched for this topic after scrolling back on giantbomb

good luck patrick

Hmmm. My understanding of a clickbait title was one which was purposefully vague or misleading so that you had to click on it (or, were baited...) to know what the hell the story was about. Something along the lines of "Woman walks into store. You won't believe what happened next."

I don't think it is fair to call "crazy headlines" clickbait. Why would you click on them? Take the watermelon that looks like a butt in the example above. The title clearly says what it will be if I click on it: if I don't want to see that, I don't click on it.

Anyway, congrats Patrick! Sorry to see you leave Giant Bomb, but best of luck moving forward

I think a newsie podcast could work. I know Patrick Beja is trying that with Pixels, which hasn't been bad so far. Doubly interesting as its not someone in the enthusiast press.

Some Gawker culture has been infused into Kotaku, of course, but this depiction is so one-sided. Most of the articles written with a touch of "clickbait" are pure fluff, and simple enough to ignore. More relevant, gaming related pieces tend to be presented reasonably and honestly. As someone who has frequented sites like The Huffington Post and BuzzFeed for awhile, and who dislikes Gawker proper with something of a passion, I have found Kotaku to be mostly inoffensive and balanced.

I mostly know Patricia Hernandez from more recent work, but I'm also not sure why you'd single her out. She has sometimes written provocative pieces, but these always seem related to a genuine point of view. "This might be controversial" doesn't equate to clickbait. I started playing the Pokemon Ruby remake around a month ago, so I've actually developed a new appreciation for her work, since I believe it's her who mostly covers the franchise. :p

Like Patrick and wish him the best but hold no regard for Kotaku and won't be following him there. Hopefully Giant Bomb replace him with someone capable.

This year brought me back to Giant Bomb in a big way. I've been a fan of Jeff and company since before GB existed, but the Bombcast got really stale around 2012-2013. An hour long discussion of yard cleaning and mowing lawns is not interesting. Talking about household chores is not interesting.

The addition of two younger members has really revitalized the 'cast. The greater emphasis on video content had me actually visiting the site on a regular basis instead of just listening to the bombcast.

As far as the community goes, that's not really what GB is about any more. It's all about the personalities now.

Dude...this is what I want. More Hummingbird feeder mask talk, less vidoegames.

As bad as GB can get, it's still pretty darn well moderated as far as gaming message boards go. I see some downright nasty, ignorant things get upvoted all the time on Kotaku's comments (that's more of a result of them having a much larger readership though).

Patrick's gonna get that same amount of hate if not moreso over there just for what he says, which is something I really hope we can strive to stamp out of our communities this year.

It's a good fit. Only Patrick knows what he wants. Not the other blokes here saying downgrade

patrick likes to write articles and interview people

No surprise Patrick is joining Kotaku. His gaming taste is vastly different than those from most of bomb crews and more in line with many people at Kotaku and he's a good friend with Jason and Tina afaik.

Some of you will get my point. Some don't.

I don't really care for the endless deluge of buzzfeed style blogspam they post, but there has been some legit good articles from time to time. I wonder if I can make an RSS feed of only Patrick's posts

yes

I want to know how this is a downgrade. Sometimes I feel gaf over and undervalues some places.

I think its kinda weird that the two main takeaways are that people in this thread don't like Kotaku because they spend too much time writing about silly stuff and not enough time on hard hitting journalism, and people in this thread love Giant Bomb and want them to keep making videos about silly stuff and ignoring hard hitting journalism.

Hmm I never " got " giantbomb, their podcast is hardly about videogames :/ just boring personality and bad jokes

Kotaku atleast has interesting articles to read aside from stupid dating advice that one editor likes to post
