Patrick Klepek is joining Kotaku

I think its kinda weird that the two main takeaways are that people in this thread don't like Kotaku because they spend too much time writing about silly stuff and not enough time on hard hitting journalism, and people in this thread love Giant Bomb and want them to keep making videos about silly stuff and ignoring hard hitting journalism.

Very true. Patrick going there tok work with the only jonrlaist I'd consider in the industry would point to them going for more hard hitting journalism. So if you want more of that from them Patrick is not going for a downgrade.

I just think they want everybody to be in giant bomb not recognizing that only certain people would fit with them.

I'm glad that there will be somewhere where I can continue to read Patrick's writing, and I mostly don't care where I read it. I think Kotaku's layout is unappealing, but that aside....

To be perfectly honest, none of Kotaku's editorials generally interest me, but, following Patrick on twitter, I won't need to sift through things to see what he's written.

My guess is Alex is doing most of the news work until the NY office gets another editorial member? Seems like that was the vibe I was getting given all the GOTY top 10 lists he was editing.

I want to know how this is a downgrade. Sometimes I feel gaf over and undervalues some places.

Hasn't Patrick himself said that games coverage is heading towards personality driven content? Kotaku seems like a step in the wrong direction in that regard.

Just went to Kotaku and read his post, my lord the website layout is horrible. If it wasn't so terrible I would go there and read his stuff, but just looking at it for 2 minutes already had me confused. A simple layout would be far more appreciated.

So you don't think he can make his personality come out in his writing?

Surely you can understand that it's a lot harder to do so compared to audio or video.

For a lot of readers, he will be "Kotaku" like all of the other writers on staff.

If he has faith in the writing he could do some things. It could also be he's more comfortable in this format as well.

It'll probably get drowned among the other hundreds of articles on kotaku. It just seems like as a writer you're contributing to the site's brand rather than working on your own.

It's also probably much easier to replace a writer than someone who does video content like the giantbomb crew, Jim Sterling or even Kyle Bosman. They will always have those loyal fans following them.

Possibly, but Kotaku has a massive readership of its own. He's a good writer, I think he'll gain new fans within that crowd.

I think he was just kinda stuck at GB. Because of his relocation to Chicago he couldn't be a part of quick looks, the podcast or even other fun GB shit like their Friday live show. Couldn't tap into much of what makes Giant Bomb great and unique.

At Kotaku he can work from Chicago and his articles will likely reach a lot more people.

Until we can get some pointers how this will work out we can't assume it's a downgrade.

If doing the video content is not his jam and this makes him feel better and makes him feel more connected to his collegues more power to him.

Personally I don't want all the media go to the giant bomb model. I like some of the works Kotaku does, different niche than giantbomb. One that looks like it fits him more. What journalistic work would he have done on giant bomb when their focus is not that.

My main point is the cult of giant bomb on this site is baffling to me. "X should work for giant bomb" makes me shake my head.

I like Patrick.

I will never support Gawker/Kotaku.

GL to him.

When do the riots start because Kotaku just hired another straight-white guy? /s

Hmm I never " got " giantbomb, their podcast is hardly about videogames :/ just boring personality and bad jokes

Kotaku atleast has interesting articles to read aside from stupid dating advice that one editor likes to post

Are you telling me when you need advice about how to charm a lady, Kotaku isn't the first place you think of to get advice?

don't really get why people have such beef with kotaku. If the clickbait stuff offends you for some reason (we all have to do what we gotta do to keep the lights up. even whatever job you are currently doing), just don't click them, or filter by tags as mentioned before.

Or I'm sure the coolest stuff will probably be posted about here on gaf too.

if posting articles about fruit flavored panties from japan is what it takes from Another gaming site shutting down or lay offs, so be it.

Nice.

Totilo, Klepek, Schreier, Plunkett & Hernandez is a pretty solid core of writers.

Yeah, I'm not shocked, they seem more in line with what he wants to do than Giant Bomb, that said, he probably stood out more at GB specifically because that's what he wants to do. He'll probably have more job appropriate resources at Kotaku.

I didn't like Patrick when he joined the bombcast..and I missed him when he left. But then eventually didn't miss him anymore. And then really enjoyed the morning shows with Alex. And I suppose I'll miss those too.

Life goes on for both entertainer and audience member. I'll wish him the best -- but I've never been one to change my media habits based on the movement of talent.

I'm just gonna poke my head in here quickly and say hi.

First and foremost, squash the conspiracy theories. I wasn't pushed out, I'm on great terms with everyone, and CBS fought hard to keep me. I was simply looking for a new challenge.

This move is definitely an unexpected one for some, but I hope you'll keep an open mind. Kotaku's changed a lot in the last year or two, and some of their approaches to reporting (ditching previews, focusing on post-release coverage) sound really exciting. It's actually not too different from what's been happening at Giant Bomb for a while, either. I know people have lots of pre-conceived notions about Kotaku (or Gawker), and I'm not going to pretend some of that wasn't earned from past work.

If you're interested in my video content, I'm going to keep streaming horror games on my personal channels. I don't have details on that yet, but stay tuned. I'm also hoping to stream a playthrough of Demon's Souls this month, since I finally want to play it.

I can't be sure, but I also think my future Kotaku posts will exclusively show up here -- http://patrickklepek.kinja.com. That might be a solution for some of you? But I think there's lots of good work happening at Kotaku, though I don't disagree sometimes it can get lost in the news shuffle.

Hopefully some (most? all?) of you will join me in my post-Giant Bomb adventures, but if you don't, thanks for your support the last few years. It's been tremendously humbling, and I'm thankful for all of it. Have a good weekend!

You'll always be a legendary Giantbomb duder in all of our hearts, Patrick.

Good luck on whatever comes next, can't wait for your DeS stream. Keep on being great.

So can Kotaku really afford to pay him more than CBS/GB? That's surprising if true.

(and I know he said he switched for a new challenge, but come on... he could produce any content he wanted at GB).

Kotaku probably could. They have a way bigger audience than Giant Bomb.

But I doubt this is about money. If his primary concern was salary a career change would be the best option.

i for one am outraged they didn't hire a trisexual, quad-gender, multi-species, fur-loving, ethnically neutral individual.

I dunno... as someone of a similar age as Patrick, I can't see him taking a pay cut to basically do the same thing he was already doing. What would be the point? Not that I would blame him for wanting more money, of course. I just assumed GB has deeper pockets than other game sites because of the premium subscriptions.

Personally I don't Care too much for one site or another, it always about the content and i'll hapilly visit Kotaku to see what Patrick does as I've enjoyed his stuff in the past.

I liked Patrick at GB but lately it seemed to me that he had too much presence on the podcast, he even sounded a bit bossy. Obviously there was something going on.

My only worry is that his work will get drowned out in a Kotaku environment. At Giant Bomb her was THE writing and news guy. At Kotaku he is just another guy, plus he has to compete against the click bait articles too.
