Patrick Klepek leaves Giant Bomb

Patrick was the only one who would really try weird Japanese stuff like Danganronpa. His presence will really be missed in that regard when GOTY stuff comes around.

Idk Jason seems like he may fill that void, he likes some of that weird stuff.

Why so much attention to Giant Bomb on NeoGaf? Are they really that good? Or are its members regular posters? Can anyone tell me what I'm missing here? (since, yeah, I'm kinda new here)

They aren't for everyone. Just like anything, humor is subjective. For some, their personality and style of humor rubs people the wrong way. For others, they absolutely love it. I think what is key to Giant Bombs success is:

I. High quality content ( they are really great at both their editorial and video content).

II. Personality driven (this is the major defining thing of the site. Each writer has a big personality, and so the site is driven by a staff of personalities that each bring their own thing. Because of this, their podcast's and other media is very good for people).

III. Very community driven. (The site has amassed a very big community, that is very active and feels connected to the personalities on the site).

Like all things, it's going to be subjective whether you like their style of writing/humor. But the fact is, there is no denying they are very successful for what they do. And they are quality, even if you don't like them. That is why they get so much attention and praise.

EDIT: As others have also said, people do feel these are real gamers, just talking about games. Other sites feel more like PR or tied close to the industry (which isn't bad per se, but this feels a lot more loose/organic). This feels more like a group of gamers, just shooting the shit and playing games. That goes a long way for people.

Yea man, he even played the sequel. Anyone who likes Danganronpa is an angel.

It's really one of the few places to get "real talk" about video games. They are real people and know a lot about games and the industry. It helps if you identify with their humor, too. I happen to find most of them to be hilarious. Great video content, too.

Best of luck to you Patrick. I'll be sure to check out your upcoming projects.

I've enjoyed reading your articles since I discovered Giant Bomb, as well as your Spookin' with Scoops videos. In my opinion, you were a perfect fit for Giant Bomb while also providing the necessary contrast.

Again, all best wishes to ya!

Like Fobwashed, I also did some stuff for Patrick over the years. You'll be missed Scoops!

Patrick was already missed when he moved to Chicago. Now doubly so. Adios, Kleptok, I will miss you greatly.

A lot of people seemed to have seen the writing on the wall after he moved, but I thought he really came into his own over the last year. I think he really stepped up and created some interesting content.

Sad to see him go, but it hasn't been the same since he moved to Chicago.

Best of luck, Patrick. I know you'r reading this thread to feel better, I know I would.

Sucks, but GB has been moving into a new era. Hard to top the Whiskey Media days with Tested and all them together though. It's just not the same to me with Patrick and Vinny across the country.

Great times, good luck to him.

This doesn't surprise me. Patrick has been building his own brand for a while now. The move to Chicago just made it more inevitable.

Patrick has done good work, and he's grown a lot in his time at Giant Bomb. I hope his next endeavor is a worthwhile one, and at an organization that gives news and reporting a proper focus. (And not one that just pays lip-service to it like Polygon. Edit: I would be so, so disappointed if he ended up at Polygon.)

I wish you the best of luck Patrick! You're one of the good ones! Don't let the industry take that from you!

Can't decide if it's a loss or the natural course. Patrick's operation in [STATE] increasingly felt on the outside as GB-east grew. Aside from the handful of full crew events and the morning podcast, Patrick did his own thing. Leaning towards loss.

Good luck to him.

I really respect Patrick and his attempts to bring Danganronpa to the GOTY. I thought that Monokuma was robbed until I heard his reasoning
Scoops: I prefer that Boyle is in the runner list

Monokuma: Fuck you, Boyle!

It's the only video game site that gives me both great video game analysis and hilarious banter.

Totally agreed, GB just makes solid content with some great personalities. Great video content, great podcasts. Their articles are good too, but that's typically not why you'd be visiting the site. (No offense meant to Patrick here at all- loved his stuff).

I tend to turn my nose up to most gaming personalities / groups / youtube channels / etc that have a strong humor bend to them, but GB is a lot more on point and just a lot less dumb and juvenile than other things I tend to see.

To each their own, but anybody in here who hasn't checked out GB... do so. Google "best giant bomb _______" (quick looks, unprofessional fridays, podcasts, fill in the blank...)

I got into the site from a friend recommending them + GAF's love of them, and I wasn't disappointed at all. I probably spend 12+ hours per week digesting nearly everything they publish, which is nuts.

well this is unsettling.

sadly I mainly know the guys from their voice so I cant pinpoint this one.

oh wait was he the guy who is with Alex Navarro in the east?

Oh nooooo! Paaaatriiiiiiiick?!

Very curious where he'll end up and I wish him the best, but I loved everything he was ever a part of on GB.

Not Surprising. I've been expecting this since he moved. Glad he stuck around to get some more good content out to us.

No more Scoopin with Spooks : (

i dont understand the love gaf have for these guys..i have tried, seriously i have watch their videos..listen their podcast and i never have fun with them, and man almost all the time the dont know shit about the medium,i remember them talking about the amiga and it was a disaster

Patrick was the only one at GB who played Danganronpa and Fire Emblem. It was refreshing to see at least one person that would bother trying to play games outside of the 'GB comfort zone.'
Could of swore both Alex and Brad played and liked Fire Emblem.

Man I hate the way I feel about GiantBomb right now. To me the site was always about the chemistry between Jeff, Ryan, Vinny and Brad. Patrick definitely added to that and he quickly became part of the crew. With Ryan passing and Patrick leaving the site lost some of it's charm, but the three main guys still soldiered on and made it awesome. When Vinny left it made me realize that Jeff and Brad don't really talk to each other much/have much of a camaraderie at all. Dan is pretty much a Jeff lite, and I get why they hired him but I think it didn't work out like it should've and I really don't enjoy listening to him. It seems a lot of what Giant Bomb is about now is telling ridiculous Dan stories then Brad ridiculing him through statements and user emails.

I've still listened all this time but it feels more now that it's out of habit than actual enjoyment. This was so apparent when they had the first big "Everyone's in the office" in december and Jeff sounded so happy and energised, the chemistry was back with vinny there and I found myself enjoying it like the old days. I know it's selfish to want but sometimes I wish Jeff would just packup shop in SF, move to NY and continue GiantBomb with Vinny and Alex, Jeff and Alex were great in the old Gamespot days, Brad could come to and maybe they could get Rich Gallup or some other old Gamespot person to join them. That's my pipe dream for the site.

Good luck to Patrick/Scoops/Tricky/exxy in all his future endeavours.

He added a different voice to the GB staff and I admire his dedication to expanding his horizons.

Kind of feel like Patrick just never really fit in there. Don't get me wrong he's a good guy, but I think that he wants to do more "news" type stuff and that's really not what GB is about these days. Still, all the best Scoops.

This is true. He played a bunch of games that probably wouldn't have seen the light of day on GB otherwise. I think he's the reason Brad gave Dark Souls another shot and came around on it and he tried Monster Hunter along with a bunch of other games. I also think when he left for Chicago, the Bombcast took a really big dive in quality. He would just talk about stuff and play games that the rest of the crew didn't and it added a lot of diversity to the discussion. I think that's mostly been fixed since Brad started hosting and Dan came on board. Maybe Jason can be that guy though. He was pushing Guilty Gear in the GOTY podcasts and does seem open way more open to playing other types of games than the rest of the crew.

I only had a brief interaction with him, but he handled a tricky situation with grace and generosity. I think he's a stand up guy, and I wish him all the best.

Seems like he'd fit in at Polygon with his stance on Social Justice issues. But what would they do with someone with talent?

Eh i disagree tbh, especially when he's with the guys.

i think his move back home really affected that aspect though.

So /v/ was right.
Honestly it didn't make a ton of sense for GB to keep one dude doing news/opinion stuff on the side while the rest of the site was entirely focused on video and podcast. Unless they planned to eventually turn the site into a huge IGN/Gamespot with more comprehensive coverage of the industry his stuff felt off topic.
I also can't say I ever really enjoyed his writing, it alwasy felt very broad and reactionnary, but I hope he'll find his place somewhere else and be happy there.

Hate to be so quick about this, but I wonder if this means they'll be hiring someone new in either New York or SF. Would love to see another new voice in either space.

That being said, super bummed. Love Patrick; he's the one who got me into Binding of Isaac, got me to actually try horror games, made me invested enough in Max Temkin to actually buy CAH instead of bumming off my friends, and the one who introduced me to that sick, sweet bastard named Dave Lang. Even though his content doesn't always seem to jive with the rest of the site, I've listened to every episode of Bombin' the AM the day of release and loved it. Sad to see him go, but excited to see where he ends up.

Now they can hire Danny away from gamespot.

Personally, no thank you. He's fine as as an every-now-and-then guest, but as a permanent member of the site I think he'd be pretty grating and not offer anything different from the other guys. I feel like Dan is just different enough to be interesting, and Jason could become much more interesting over time. I think he in particular has a lot more to offer.

They are hiring in New York.

Not joining Nintendo, not doing a Patreon and not becoming a Community Manager?

So I guess he's going to think that talking about video games makes him qualified to design mobile games?

Truly a bummer. I thought with the expansion to the midwest/east coast GB was going to really turn themselves into more of an all-encompassing site.

Don't get me wrong, I know their bread and butter are quick looks and podcasts, but still.

I also don't like what he said about working with Brad in the future again. Not to sound all doomsday-ish but, yeah, I don't want to type it out, you know what I'm getting at.
