Patrick Klepek leaves Giant Bomb

I think he has a lot of talent and can be very smart, but honestly, I'm glad. Shit I'm psyched actually.

Giant Bomb to me has always just been about certain personalities interacting with video games. I always had an open mind about Patrick and have respected much of his work on the site, but to be honest he just wasn't the type of personality I was looking for when coming to GB. It's hard to explain and I don't really want to, but he just had a way of putting the spotlight were I didn't need to be. At least when it comes to me.

Not meaning to insult him or anything, I wish him well and I'm sure he'll continue to do great things, but I think this is a good thing. Good luck Patrick.

Someday, when Patrick is already satisfied with his accomplishments, he'll come back to just work for fun. Patrick is the Pat Smear to Giant Bomb's Foo Fighters.

Gonna miss patrick. Wonder what came up or if it was just working alone in chicago wasn't cutting it? I know it'd be hard to find motivation working from home by yourself all the time for most people.

Just read Patrick's farewell post on the site. Definitely bittersweet and makes you all the more sad to lose him on GB. Really appreciated him chronicling the process of him getting hired, the stories with Ryan and the rest of the crew. He's a good duder.

Man, gonna miss him.

Ever since the padding of Ryan (RIP) it feels like Giant bomb is in this state of transition where their footing isn't quite right, and now Patrick is outright gone :(

Sad news.
i haven't been following GB much this year, but Patrick was always a different and interesting point of view from the other guys at GB, that integrated very well their "offering" so to speak.

Guys, if you believe hard enough it might just become a Patreon tier!
I feel like Dan and Brian would play off each other magically, I personally like Dan quite a bit anyway so it would be a dream come true.

Didn't Altano and Scott Bromley used to openly mock Jeff and Ryan for stuff like wearing Jorts in the early days of them having their own podcast. I'm sure I remember Gies on Rebel FM telling them to cut it out too when they were about to go off on it again.

I really like the Comedy Button too but not really sure how good a fit he'd be. Especially as it's a news post they need and that's not really his thing.

This isn't some massive, faceless corporation, this is a website with a small core on-air group of what 7 or 8 people, not including Danny or Mary or the visitors? They need to find someone who fits into the cult of personality that the site encourages.

While a female representative would be cool, as would an African American or Asian American or gay person, etc, I'd rather have another Ryckert who fits in than them trying to awkwardly fit someone in.

I don't know if you followed Patrick before he joined but he was nothing like the other GB members.

Im starting to worry about the whole website tbh, the content doesnt seem as good anymore, all but dan seem jaded and burnout on the whole, the return of ads and that long ass spell of near zero content, i dont think all is well at gb.

According to Jeff, this has been the best year ever for GB, a "banner year" was his words. I don't think you have to worry about the site.

I am rather saddened he is leaving. His written content is the best in the industry and I enjoyed his dedication to all things horror. Didn't always agree with his viewpoints, but I will miss his presence.

Considering how much hate Patrick got (and still gets), I wonder what kind of vitriol would be spewed against a female bomber.

Did you see the comments about the trans girl from gamespot, who was on their streams a few times? At least there wasn't too many idiots here, but the GB comment section was truly embarrassing.

wasnt he the guy that had a huge hard on for assassins creed, yea for best

Good luck to you, Patrick. Wherever you're headed, duder.

Can't say I'm completely shocked tough. He always felt to me like the odd-one-out of the bombcrew, but I really enjoyed his different takes and tastes, especially when he was situated in SF and interacted with the other crew.(Hot dog suit and Kleptok will forever live on in GB lore) Unfortunately I found myself following his stuff less and less after he moved to Chicago and had to carry his videos mostly on his own and I never really found the Bombing in the AM framing to be all that interesting when it was just Alex and Patrick sans guests waxing back and forth. I will miss his perspective, different genre preferences and most of all, Pixel. Hopefully this will end being a good thing and Kleptok will grow to become even more powerful.

How am I goin to know which videos to automatically dislike on YouTube now?

It was you!

Lol but seriously, nothing but the best wishes to him.

I hope his replacement is cool ^_^
Edit: Oh that girl they've had on the livestreams seemed like she fit right in. Being owned by the same people as Gamespot, I wonder how big of a deal it would be for her to "transfer" over.

Mary? Like with Danny, there's no way they're gonna actually transfer over anyone like that. Gamespot needs to hold onto their good personalities as well.

WTF. While he might have some weird gaps in his knowledge of the world, he's like the sweetest dude ever and knows his shit when it comes to games. He has awesome stories as well and is quite entertaining. How anyone can hate on Dan is beyond me.

I think it pretty much boils down to where and how you grew up and what your stance on all kinds of ethics are. While a large part of his audience might be from the US and generally see his ignorance and lack of knowledge as endearing and/or funny, I was born in Germany where a wasteful and ignorant lifestyle like his and showing no consciousness about it are not considered good traits in a human being.
How anyone in this day and age can openly admit to wasting crazy amounts of plastics each day just because they're too lazy to wash dishes is completely beyond me. Also he apparently has never in his life heard of factory farming or animal cruelty. Most of his audience might not be concerned about issues like these, I do get that, but I am and its not so much that he says things like that, it's that he doesn't even consider that there might be another side to the coin.
He's the picture book American stereotype that I find so very offensive and in the case of the people I know personally not correct at all, but in his case it's absolutely true and on point.
Is he a funny and entertaining guy? Hell yes he is! But there's only so much ignorance I can take before listening to someone on a weekly basis becomes less of a joy and more of a pain.
But that's just me, I'm not judging anyone who loves that guy and believe me, not listening to the crew anymore was hard and I miss them quite a bit since they produce some quality content that you won't find anywhere else.

Btw, Patrick on the other hand I feel was the complete polar opposite of Dan which I enjoyed, and to see him go is an unfortunate turn of events for the whole site I think. Hopefully it's the right decision for Patrick and I wish him all the best for the new year and his new endeavors. I enjoyed him very much on the bombcast in his early years.
And then there's also Brad who I like very much and who I felt in the last few episodes I listened to (months ago, not recently) was very aware and conscious of the stupid things Dan says without a single care in the world, and I could almost hear him cringe as hardly as me.

I like the guy, but outside of video games and wrestling, he plays up his ignorant-and-proud-of-it persona like no other. Some people don't like that.

This was a pretty big bummer to find out. I've always looked forward to Patrick's content. His articles are good reads, and his premium content is the main reason I pay for a subscription. I'm excited to see where he lands! Go Bears!

As far as how one can hate Dan, I kinda get it. The first few podcasts he was on, I was a bit astounded. However, he just seems so nice to everyone and has a really positive attitude about most things. He may have extreme opinions about things that he hasn't experienced, but he is willing to give them another try with an open mind.

Sad to hear, although not completely unexpected with him being all alone in the midwest. I hope he stays in the gaming press.

I'm not positive that Giantbomb really needs to necessarily "fill" Patrick's role. Dan, Jeff, Brad and Drew... I'm digging the way that team has come together and the way they play off of each other. I think they're fine right now.

I wish him the best! I remember when he first came on, and I was very doubtful that it would work with him... but he was a rockstar, and I came to really enjoy that guy.

I hope whatever he does works out for him, and I hope his office is closer to home. It's hard to be the only guy working by themselves, remotely. At least Vinny and Alex get to hang with each other.

Why do they "need" someone who just fits into the exact same mold? Homogeneity is fucking boring.

This has been my main thing reading this thread with the Scoops didn't fit in stuff and who GB should hire. A variety of personalities, different viewpoints and fresh perspectives I'd think would always be welcomed.

I believe he's referring to Patrick re-tweeting a couple of tweets by people complaining that they hired more white dudes. I think he removed them shortly afterwards, but it did come across as dumb behavior by someone employed by the same business.
I wonder if he did that more ironically.

But really I always got the impression that Patrick found himself above a lot of people, which got increasingly tiresome.

Interesting. I'm just now getting back into the Bombcast these last few weeks as we close out 2014, after not listening much since Ryan's death. I haven't heard this kind of stuff but I'll probably notice it more now.

He's also really against all of the misogyny and sexism in Metal Gear. Bayonetta 2 GOTY.

Also MechaMothra, you can remove me from your PSN friends list. I had to change my account. ;)

Deeply saddened to have Patrick go. I'll never forget his early "grandma's cookies" and arcade cabinet days on the site.

Though I never shared parallel tastes in games, Patrick felt like the strongest touchstone of interests (games and otherwise) on the site for me. He made some incredible content, and his wing stretching into unfamiliar territory with his games made for some strong editorials.

The amount of grief and headache that came from the topics and issues you covered was surprisingly strong, but the way you grew through it was inspiring. Thank you for caring about less-represented peoples and trying to share the importance of acceptance in a mutual hobby (and beyond).

You might be gone from GB, but you will most certainly not be forgotten.
Best wishes in everything you do, Patrick, and I eagerly look forward to you popping back into the circle when you can.

I don't see those two things as mutually exclusive.

I really, really disagree, but I was a dick to even drop it in here. I'll PM you my thesis on internet-personality hypocrisy relating to populist opinion.

And I'll leave this thread as it should be.

He's also really against all of the misogyny and sexism in Metal Gear. Bayonetta 2 GOTY.

the idea that you can't criticize something while simultaneously liking or loving it deeply is the source of so many stupid arguments in games.

there's also the possibility that he just doesn't find bayo 2 to be gross.

personally i think they're both kinda bad, but MGS is way worse. i know plenty of people who really love both and i don't think any less of them for it.

I don't see those two things as mutually exclusive.

Yeah he's a bit of a hypocrite (and wrong about MGS:PP). I didn't always see eye to eye with him but over the years I've grown to appreciate him and when I heard the news, I still felt that pang in my stomach when I heard the news that he was leaving. Hopefully whatever he does he lands on his feet. I hope he doesn't take any other companies down with him like 1-UP and MTV, etc, etc. :)

I don't know if you followed Patrick before he joined but he was nothing like the other GB members.

Yeah I'm aware he was/is very different in many ways, but he still gelled quite easily, and that's more what I meant. He was, like the guys, someone who let his personality shine and wasn't uncomfortable with his 'celebrity'.

My objection would be more if they got someone who would be reserved, for instance. I don't care if that new hire's tastes are different--I enjoyed what I perceived to he Patrick beinf able to shine a spotlight on indie games, which I didn't notice as much prior to him being there.

I say promote A-STRIKER to editor and get another video guy.

Jason's had some of the most interesting opinions in quite a long time and he does a very good job of explaining them.

Why do they "need" someone who just fits into the exact same mold? Homogeneity is fucking boring.
Because it's a personality based site, and having someone in the room that doesn't mesh well with those personalities is off putting (They could hire a woman or a minority, that's really a non-issue as long as the person is funny and up for all of the dumb conversation that comes with being part of the Bombcast). It's not like it's just a news site where the most important thing is journalistic ability. Giant Bomb is an entertainment site far more then it's ever been a legitimate news site, and the best way to make something less entertaining is by adding something that does not mesh well for the style that the program is going for.

Giant Bomb bringing in people to make the site more journalistic and serious would be GB's jumping the shark moment as far as I'm concerned. That's never been what I go to GB for, in fact, the main reason I visit so frequently is because it seems to be the only video game website geared more towards entertainment then it does news and serious issues. I can find those articles anywhere.
