Patrick Klepek leaves Giant Bomb

2. Are we even sure they are hiring another person? I like Patrick a lot but I can't say that that has anything to do with the news or articles he's posted on the site. I get my news from GAF+Twitter long before its ever on Giantbomb.
Yep. They've had a job listing for a spot at the NYC office.

I agree with the news thing though. Hard for me to think of anything more antiquated (at least for me personally) than gaming news sites. GAF and Twitter gets stuff instantly. Probably something Jeff foresaw years ago, really smart that they went a totally different route being personality driven and video focused.

God that new hire is going to result in a bloodbath on the internet
Oh yeah. No matter who gets it, people are gonna be pissed.

It's ok, my contacts at Giantbomb are that I'm still No. 1 contender for the Wrestlemania 2000 title from Alex, and Jeff didn't bash my head in with a glass bottle. That was John Drake. That fucker. God I hate that asshole.

Where was I? Oh yeah. Patrick.

I hung out with him and his wife about 12 days ago. She's much cooler than him.

They wanted to do interviews prior to the holidays, but GOTY took priority, sooooooo

What the fuck, man, this was out of nowhere.

Patrick held it down for a period there out in Chicago, during a lull period at Giant Bomb, which did eventually get a decent kick in the ass with the hiring of Dan. So, thanks for that.

I'll keep an eye out for his future endeavors though.

Haha. I'm not going to Nintendo, and I'm not becoming a community manager. :)

I'm also OK saying I'm not going independent and opening up a Patreon, either.

I did want to stop by and say hi, though. NeoGAF was one of my first homes--people forget I was a moderator way, way, way back in the pre-NEO days. You've treated me very well during my tenure at Giant Bomb, even when we haven't seen eye-to-eye. Thanks for that.

Good luck Patrick, and thank you for all you've done at Giant Bomb!

HI

What does this mean for Giant Bomb? New hire?

As for Patrick, the Iceland video was one of the best pieces of content on the site. Sucks we don't get more of that type of stuff. As someone who never goes to the actual site though I never really consumed much of Patrick's stuff. Once he left for Chitown it kind of felt it he was already gone for me(I never really watched his streams or listened to his show wish Alex). That's happening now with Vinny, not having him on the bombcast or UPF is a major bummer for me.

Patrick leaving dashes any hopes of a Patrick/Vinny/Alex podcast, but oh well. I have a feeling that Danny O'Dwyer might be a good fit if they are going to have new hires. Fuck, Patrick brought a much needed perspective though. Granted, Dan is filling the role of the only other guy besides Alex who champions Nintendo but Patrick actually went out of his way to play a lot of lesser known/indie stuff that no one else would play.

Of course, I still remember when Patrick was the new guy. There was a lot of hostility towards him at first but then he grew on people and man had some sources. Remember when he BROKE the Xbox One DRM reversal? That story was huge. Obviously, I wish him the best.

Sad to see you go Patrick. I really enjoyed Bombin the AM. Good luck on your next venture. I hope it's somewhat public so we get to hear more from you, but if it's not, so be it!

This is sad. I always thought Klepek was a fantastic addition to the site. His input will be missed.

As well as a brilliant journo, Patrick is also an exceptional public speaker. I think many people predicted great things ahead for him, the man has undeniable talent.

I can even envision him delving into TV....I think its exciting times ahead for him. I for one am very happy for him

I wouldn't be shocked if he ended up on TV eventually, though I'm not sure where he'd go right now. G4's long dead, and there doesn't seem to be a booming business for gaming news & info on television. I could fathom a smaller channel like Pivot or Esquire wanting to branch into gaming content.. but I doubt it.

That said, he was hyping up some new studio space on Twitter recently... He has to be doing another on-camera gig.

After Dan's blatant ignorance on anything (other than games) made me unsubscribe from the podcast, Brian Altano joining the team would absolutely make me listen again, without a question. Listening to more of Dan would be a small price to pay for more of Altano's comedic genius.

Don't fucking tease me, that would be awesome. Now I'm sad that won't happen you bastard :(.

Guys, if you believe hard enough it might just become a Patreon tier!
I feel like Dan and Brian would play off each other magically, I personally like Dan quite a bit anyway so it would be a dream come true.

I sure remember.

He has a knack for making contacts, breaking big stories and building contacts....so he does not necessarily need to stick with gaming related journalism.

These are qualities big TV networks look for in budding young journalists.....I could see him easily reporting on almost any topic or move into a public speaking role.

Its obvious he likes to cut his teeth into the bigger issues, so shoehorning himself into gaming related issues would be wasting his talent imo

After the way he treated his new co-worker earlier this year I am so thankful they're getting rid of him.
Dan didn't deserve that and the whole crew will be better off without him.

Bye.

I'm sorry I'm lazy and don't want to read the entire thread, but was this ever clarified?

Also Giantbomb is doing well, right? I don't want the site to go anywhere. I also never want Jeff to leave, as he essentially IS Giantbomb.

I believe he's referring to Patrick re-tweeting a couple of tweets by people complaining that they hired more white dudes. I think he removed them shortly afterwards, but it did come across as dumb behavior by someone employed by the same business.

GB has been doing some odd twists this past year. Past year and a half, really. I liked Patrick, but him and Vinny moving out was like seeing the cards falling onto the table.

Jeff is great and all, Dan is wacky and a nice addition, but overall there has been such a shift in GB.

Im starting to worry about the whole website tbh, the content doesnt seem as good anymore, all but dan seem jaded and burnout on the whole, the return of ads and that long ass spell of near zero content, i dont think all is well at gb.

This isn't some massive, faceless corporation, this is a website with a small core on-air group of what 7 or 8 people, not including Danny or Mary or the visitors? They need to find someone who fits into the cult of personality that the site encourages.

While a female representative would be cool, as would an African American or Asian American or gay person, etc, I'd rather have another Ryckert who fits in than them trying to awkwardly fit someone in.

So... another person who can fit in can't be one of those?

Calm down peeps. Patrick has been in Chicago for a while now, this doesn't really change much for the crew at the main office.

I was always just a podcast listener who very occasionally read something on the site, so I've been missing Patrick for more than a year now. The time when he started trying out different and weird and Japanese games was my favourite time for Giant Bomb. I'm looking forward to seeing what he does next!

Huh? It's been a gradual shift, but it is certainly different.
Well sure. That'll inevitably happen when people pass away or move out of state. Though I guess I was responding more to the other two posts about the well being of the site. I don't think people need to worry about it shutting down or whatever.

I say promote A-STRIKER to editor and get another video guy.

Jason's had some of the most interesting opinions in quite a long time and he does a very good job of explaining them.

Why do they "need" someone who just fits into the exact same mold? Homogeneity is fucking boring.
