Patrick Klepek leaves Giant Bomb

I think it pretty much boils down to where and how you grew up and what your stance on all kinds of ethics are. While a large part of his audience might be from the US and generally see his ignorance and lack of knowledge as endearing and/or funny, I was born in Germany where a wasteful and ignorant lifestyle like his and showing no consciousness about it are not considered good traits in a human being.
How anyone in this day and age can openly admit to wasting crazy amounts of plastics each day just because they're too lazy to wash dishes is completely beyond me. Also he apparently has never in his life heard of factory farming or animal cruelty. Most of his audience might not be concerned about issues like these, I do get that, but I am and its not so much that he says things like that, it's that he doesn't even consider that there might be another side to the coin.
He's the picture book American stereotype that I find so very offensive and in the case of the people I know personally not correct at all, but in his case it's absolutely true and on point.
Is he a funny and entertaining guy? Hell yes he is! But there's only so much ignorance I can take before listening to someone on a weekly basis becomes less of a joy and more of a pain.
But that's just me, I'm not judging anyone who loves that guy and believe me, not listening to the crew anymore was hard and I miss them quite a bit since they produce some quality content that you won't find anywhere else.

Btw, Patrick on the other hand I feel was the complete polar opposite of Dan which I enjoyed, and to see him go is an unfortunate turn of events for the whole site I think. Hopefully it's the right decision for Patrick and I wish him all the best for the new year and his new endeavors. I enjoyed him very much on the bombcast in his early years.
And then there's also Brad who I like very much and who I felt in the last few episodes I listened to (months ago, not recently) was very aware and conscious of the stupid things Dan says without a single care in the world, and I could almost hear him cringe as hardly as me.

That personality trait can be grating at times. Like when he tweeted
I don't really get why so many people bitch about TSA. They're an unenthusiastic bunch, but that's the worst I've seen.

As the whitest American on the planet, it just seemed like he didn't even consider how it might be worse for someone like say, Rami Ismail who is regularly given "random" checks. That left a really sour taste in my mouth

Because it's a personality based site, and having someone in the room that doesn't mesh well with those personalities is off putting (They could hire a woman or a minority, that's really a non-issue as long as the person is funny and up for all of the dumb conversation that comes with being part of the Bombcast). It's not like it's just a news site where the most important thing is journalistic ability. Giant Bomb is an entertainment site far more then it's ever been a legitimate news site, and the best way to make something less entertaining is by adding something that does not mesh well for the style that the program is going for.

Giant Bomb bringing in people to make the site more journalistic and serious would be GB's jumping the shark moment as far as I'm concerned. That's never been what I go to GB for, in fact, the main reason I visit so frequently is because it seems to be the only video game website geared more towards entertainment then it does news and serious issues. I can find those articles anywhere.

So you didn't like Patrick? That's pretty much why he was brought in.

That's too bad to read Dan is...like that. I had only known him from Metal Gear Scanlon. I thought him wearing those US flag pijamas was a sarcastic sort of thing, but I guess not? 'MURICA!

He's pretty book smart and I really like him overall but admittedly he's said some pretty ignorant stuff. Not enough to make me dislike him since he's one of my favorite GB members at the moment but yeah.

Think y'all are taking some of the shit Dan says way, way too seriously :lol

He can be pretty naive, he's admitted as such, but I think he leans into it a bit for entertainment (and to get a rise out of Brad).

Like when he said he could just surf his mattress down to the ground if his building collapsed because his apartment was on the top floor. Or that becoming president on the "everything's fine" platform would be really easy. Or dozens of other things.

Surely you recognize the difference between saying "I can surf a mattress down a building in an earthquake" said on a podcast and "The TSA isn't all that bad" on a tweet?

Contex to the TSA tweet? I don't get why that's a bad thing to say. Is it related to race or something offensive I'm clearly missing?

Like I mentioned, Rami Ismail.

Rami is a brown skinned man with a big black beard. Guess how often he has to get "randomly" stopped by the TSA? Often enough that he actually has a website dedicated to it. http://didramigetrandomchecked.com/
21% of the flights he takes, he gets harassed by the TSA, and I'm sure you can imagine why.

Of course Dan hasn't had any problem with the TSA.
But to say "I don't really get why so many people bitch about TSA" is horribly ignorant.

See you Patrick, I'm fairly new to GB but appreciated your personality and work. I recently enjoyed your Bombin' the A.M. with Jim Sterling. Best of luck to you !

Jason is good people. He's really good at fighting games. When they played Street Fighter you could tell he was letting Jeff get a few just outta pity. It's sorta funny since Jeff was probably "fighting game guy" before Jason got there.

I may be off-base here, but I'd guess the post-911 racial profiling that's gone on in America.

You're right on that one. I can see why that would raise eyebrows. Just saying Dan's intentions (which doesn't excuse insensitivity I admit) on those two statements were probably pretty similar. Goofy shit that wasn't meant to deeply offend anyone. And usually what he says, at least in the content I've seen and heard, falls much closer to mattress surfing than denying racial issues.

Dan didn't know what egg whites were until he tried to cook an egg shell and then called his mom to ask her what he was doing wrong. If you bring up what you just said about Rami Ismail to Dan, I'd be willing to bet he'd see your point.

I cede the fact that his ignorance is distressing when it comes to stuff like that, but given his open-mindedness I think that he redeems himself when given the opportunity to understand opposing viewpoints.

dan is too well meaning and positive to get annoyed about. like he doesn't believe people should be harassed for flying while non-white, he just feels sad that the people who work there get loads of shit despite them coming across as nice ordinary people to him because he's a good natured person. he's not a thoughtful person who looks at all the sides but he's basically harmless i feel. no-one is going to look to him for guidance on important things, he doesn't have any influence.

Jason is good people. Sucks he doesn't get more exposure, but they've been doing pretty good putting him on more frequently than Drew in the early days.

jeff kinda worked him in the kof98 quick look

Wow, good luck Patrick.

I stopped listening to the podcast because of Dan. His constant ignorance is not funny or cute to me. I just could not take it anymore though I loved GiantBomb and never missed an episode before he came on.

Considering how much hate Patrick got (and still gets), I wonder what kind of vitriol would be spewed against a female bomber.

If Mary is any indication.. little to none.

Though anyone that takes the job is going to get some degree of hate. Just look at how a thread about Patrick leaving has become a soapbox for people to talk about how much they hate/like Dan.

Like I mentioned, Rami Ismail.

Rami is a brown skinned man with a big black beard. Guess how often he has to get "randomly" stopped by the TSA? Often enough that he actually has a website dedicated to it. http://didramigetrandomchecked.com/

Oh I know about Rami's unfortunate profiling with TSA. Heck, I used to get that as a brown dude whenever I travelled to the USA usually at New York. I understand now, thanks.

I'm not a huge GB follower but it's undergone a lot of changes recently and not for the better.

Ryan's passing left most of us gutted, Jeff just seems to hate everything now and without Vinnie there his Quick Looks aren't funny anymore, I've never been a big fan of Alex, and now Patrick is leaving.

I figured with the new guys coming Patrick would probably be the first to jump ship if anyone did. It's a shame too because I can't really stand Dan. I think he's kind of obnoxious and there's only so many wrestling references I can take before I have to close out of the videos he's in. I think I'm just sort of phasing out of GB as a whole. Not much left to like for me.

It's for the best I think. Best of luck to him in the future though, hopefully see him around somewhere.

Shame they couldn't take Dan away from us too.

I think Dan's fucking hilarious. I'm not a fan of wrestling at all, but dude is entertaining.
Dude basically single-handedly reinvigorated my interest in Giant Bomb. I had checked out after Ryan's passing until he was hired.

And despite being the new guy, he's already holding it down on the premium content front with MGS Scanlon. He and Drew are great together.

But to say "I don't really get why so many people bitch about TSA" is horribly ignorant.

Thing is, the "so many people" aren't complaining about the TSA because of racial profiling. They're complaining because they've been inconvenienced by the TSA in some fashion. In fact, a lot of the complaining I've seen has been from people angry that the TSA policy is too random and that they should be racial profiling.

I'm from Texas and still think Dan is the worst, incredibly wasteful and willfully ignorant. My father is the furthest thing from a hippie but still raised me to not be wasteful.

He's a fucking child. I cannot believe a grown man still says and does the shit he's known for. And he's actually proud of it.

I loved Patrick and even enjoyed his solo shows. Losing Patrick and adding Dan is a really bad sign for my favorite gaming podcast and video site.

Ugh, I can definitely sympathize with Rami. The amount of insensitivity in the games industry is appalling.

I respect a man who lives his life the way he wants to.

He just discovered there was no air in space during the Elite Dangerous video.

I can sense the other GB dudes feeling uncomfortable explaining things often to his dumb persona, especially Alex. And they don't rip on him for it because they must not believe it, so it's not even entertaining, just embarrassing.

I like his Mario Party videos, sure.

If anything else it's a really smart career choice if he is getting out of journalism. It just seems like there's no future in that line of work.

I never really liked Patrick, matter of fact he usually annoyed me. I'm not saying he is a bad person, he is an internet personality and I just happen to not like his personality. I wish him the best in the future, I'm sure he will do some good work in 2015.

Ya, I've slowly taken the Bombcast out of my weekly listening schedule because they will literally talk about wrestling for anywhere from the first 20-50 minutes. Either that or I just forward through those bits, but still, it's quite appalling that they think people actually want to listen to that, especially when they already have a separate wrestling podcast.

I like to listen to that.

GB died when Ryan died. All of them geographically splitting up after was the nail in the coffin. I will love these guys forever, but the magic will never be there again. Patrick is smart getting off now before it sinks more.

Yeah, I've stopped listening to the podcast because of it and they lost my sub.

I mean, I can only remember them talking about wrestling for 20-50 minutes maybe once or twice.

Dan defending Ground Zeroes as being well written and above criticism is enough for me to know he's a crappy person with nothing to say that I want to hear. He needs to grow up beyond adolescence at some point.

Wow.... Talk about insanity. I think your the one that needs to grow up.

I disagree that GB died, it changed when ryan died but it's still amazing and still as good as ever. I miss ryan and his death left a hole but it's because he was amazing and I think its not fair to say the site is not worth visiting now.
