PC Gamer: Paradox pulls Stellaris mod that makes all humans "European"

I object to devs/pubs having control over how their games get modded and that's why I'm thankful that the Steam Workshop hasn't become the primary way that mods are distributed. This mod is some racist garbage though, that goes without saying.

Well it's their game, they can do what they want with it but I'm not a fan of thought police or the political correctness that is taking over Europe. It's the little things that are starting to annoy me. Comedians that can't joke about certain ethnicities any more, games that have to be censored because of hurt feelings or people actually being prosecuted for speaking the truth.

What is this truth you speak of?

Tell us how you really feel.

I assume the line between of people like that and those who lost their shit over the non-white leaders in Civilization Beyond Earth is thinner than we think.

Part of me feels like these grand strategy and 4x games are attractive to the worst kind of gamers.

For me I have been playing grand strategies (particularly Paradox's) since early 2000s, they've always been niche games and had great communities, but Stellaris I have definitely noticed a large group of assholes in the community appear, I guess because Stellaris is also their most popular game that's "mainstream" now, attracting a lot of people that have never played their games which means there will be also an increase in worst kinds of people. The people complaining about a black woman human leader for Earth for example are typical of those associated with GG, they were also complaining that there were too many women in the game, these people come out of the woodworks, I hate it. When they released their free Women in History DLC I can't remember anyone complaining about "SJW agendas" because I suppose it's because it being niche game it would have a lower amount of idiots, but since Stellaris is more mainstream, just having a black woman as the leader of Earth in the beginning is now some sort of "SJW agenda" according to some players. Any ways, PDX have always been good on moderating their games/communities of people like this though, since their games are also historical simulations so they need to be aware of things like neo-nazis using their games for glorification such as the Hearts of Iron series can attract people who like to glorify Nazi Germany. Their games are not made for those people, they are made for people who love history, playing and experiencing it like this by Paul Mason is what they're about.

Their games like Europa Universalis simulates historical events accurately and provides context and knowledge on the history which is great, there is no revisionism since they also consult and have historians working on the games for its simulation. It's like reading a history book, except it goes a step further and simulates history as it occurred over time as an interactive eperience. As a result there can be some shitty people that like to take historical contexts and role play it in a fictional way and make AARs (after action reports) where they express racist views, these are heavily prohibited from their forums.

Since they are historical simulations, there are things like the Edict of Expulsion/Alhambra Decree that will occur, their events are presented no different than opening up a history book and reading about it, but some people will use this to do fictional role playing where they express racist/antisemitic views for example and they prohibit that from all their official business platforms such as their forums. They are phenomenal games if you like playing historical games and learning about history and playing them strategically in historic context but this also means that shitty people can also do shitty things with it. It's also why they have had a very strong stance against concentration camps and gulags in their Hearts of Iron series, some people have requested them over the years but are told a firm "No." since it's not important, they are games about the WW2 theaters of war itself and that by adding things like concentration camps or gulags would only fuel the glorification neo-nazis want. The games definitely can attract the worst kind of gamers, but unfortunately that's what history seems to do in general, looking up articles about history online for example, the comments are always filled with racists, revisionists, etc. For the most part their niche games have always had fantastic communities, the filth was always moderated away and stayed on 4chan boards.

Racism and sexism is so alien to me as a concept.

Its even worse when those racists and sexists accuse you of being a sexist in reverse to divert any criticism of them being those things.

I've literally heard people approving of a black character in star wars is promoting racism against white people for example, along with the main female character being 'an obvious ploy to appeal to feminazis'

I just don't understand where people's mindset comes from to exclude others just because of a displaced sense of superiority, and then when you call them out, they act offended as if that is a form of censorship. Your not immune to being criticized, nor are you immune to being called out.

Oh shit.

What "truth" is being taken away from us?

:o

they removed the mod because the modder linked to a "white genocide" youtube channel in the description after an edit

Who are the thought police here? Seems to me like the mod creator is the one trying to develop an alternate reality safe space.
Like I said they have every right to remove it, it's their game after all. But it's just a symptom of the times that such a big deal is made out of it. Why do people care some guy modded a game to have only white characters? How is it hurting anyone?

the mod stayed up when it was just the mod. it was taken down when the modder decided to dump shitty racist propaganda on the developer's steam workshop page.

Because it's openly motivated by a white supremacy mentality, which is a mentality that has a negative effect on non-whites in the real world.

The mod isn't purged from the internet or even forcibly disabled through an update, Paradox just doesn't want it associated with the game on the Steam Workshop page. It's pretty reasonable to not want to be associated with white supremacist and bigotry in general.

If the developer pulled the mod then I assume there's some sort of mod client that people can upload mods to for other people to easily download and install, right?

I guess nothing could stop the modder from releasing it through unofficial means and people could just install it the more complex way. ie: search through the file directories and insert it themselves?

You don't know how the world works. It seems like how you really feel about others different from youself is being smothered by trying to appear politically correct at the same time, but its too obvious.

Its the old 'states rights' excuse of America but in Europe.

We already know that that this went far beyond being acceptable when the modder linked directly to white supremacists.

Oh no, people can't do racist shit without getting called out for it anymore! The absolute horror!

believe it or not, not everyone is down with white supremacy

They pulled it from steam workshop, you can still download it from moddb.

I don't consider "no multiculturalism here" to be racist, multiculturalism is a good thing but not to the extend that it destroys ones own culture, norms and values. Wanting ones own culture, norms and values to stay dominant is not a bad thing at all.

you are not going to last long here if you have no issues with white genocide hysteria

he's not wrong tho. europe believe it or not is very multicultural. each nation has his own.
(i'm not defending the mod, but everyone should be free to use whatever they want if they do without being rude)

In the context of the mod, it's absurd since the mod just removes names and skin colours from the pool of characters.

'dominant'? Oh boy.

That'll be like if all the white people try and start rounding up and strictly regulating the latinos in America cause they are 'concerned about purity of their values and cultural appropriations'.

Good on Paradox for being proactive, especially when the modder was linking to white supremacist videos. Ignoring stuff like that does your community no service (which is also why I am grateful to the GAF moderators).

But wow at some of the dog whistles and disingenuous lines of question that popped up in this thread.

People should be mod in what they want. It's the entire point of mods.

the mod still exists. it can be downloaded and installed.

it is not being given a place on the developer-owned steam workshop page. they don't want prospective customers potentially being bombarded by overtly racist garbage when they check out the game on steam. it's the same reason why you can't get any of the millions of anime tiddy mods for skyrim on steam.

People should be mod in what they want. It's the entire point of mods.

It's not like the mod doesn't exist anymore, it just isn't on the Steam Workshop page. The modder can still distribute it if they want, but Paradox can decide if they want it on their product page.

Edit: that was fast.

The mod isn't blocked from being used just not allowed prominent space on their store. Hell, they would have let it stay if it wasn't edited with propaganda.

Edit: Dear god the mods move in silence.

Why would you buy Stellaris to just play like this?

It'd be like going to a multicultural food festival and just eating McDonalds.

Here is the thread on the official forums announcing that DLC:
https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...es-international-women’s-day-with-dlc.840806/

Note the warning that they felt they needed to add at the top. There was a lot of complaining about agenda-driven releases then as well.

Paradox didn't specify how the description had changed, but several Redditors state that it was the addition of “No multiculturalism here!” that triggered the decision to remove the mod. Interestingly, the description of the mod on ModDB (where it remains available) doesn't contain the phrase. The first comment, however, is a request to eliminate women from the game as well.

No. We need to call out their bullshit and make it known that mods like this are not acceptable. Ignoring them only enables them to continue spreading their hateful shit and harming others. See: Gamergate.

Wait, why are mods like this not acceptable?

I support paradoxs right to not have this in a storefront, but I also support modders rights to do as they please with games they purchased, even if it offends me

The mod does not mesh with how Paradox wishes to market the game, and as it is their copyrighted material, they have the right to have it taken down.

So you can link to white supremacists and specifically say discriminatory things on your description page?

Guess I can go make a kill all *enter minority here* mod and no one should be able to do anything about it. On Steam Workshop of all places, where my mod is now tied with this game and company.

As far as I know (correct me if I am wrong) they can still have as racist mods as they would like hosted elsewhere. There really isn't anything controversial about them banning a mod that was obviously bating for this exact reaction.
