PC Gamers: Seagate Hard Disk Firmware Problems Acknowledged

Great...I though I was in the clear with new firmware until one of my 1.5 TB drives started the click of death. When it starts clicking it causes I/O operations to "stutter". This is particularly annoying while streaming video.

I'll be RMA'ing this one after less than 2 weeks.

Edit: Just to clarify I did not update the firmware on this drive, came with CC1J. Seems like it's just a defective drive and not related to these firmware issues.

Updated all my drives, went smoothly.

Looks like seagate is down to OEM duty for a while. They're newer drives are doomed at retail.

So what model/firmware were they? Mine is a ST3500320AS with firmware SD15, haven't updated yet.

F' ME!

I just got the 500 GB ST3500320AS only like a month ago!!

Luckily all I did so far was partition a fraction of it for Windows 7 and didn't move the majority of the data I had on my old drive like I was planning to yet.

Then what are you waiting for? Update it and tell us how it went :p

What firmware is it?

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
I have an affected drive (Model: ST3750630AS) but my Firmware is: SD46.

So am I in the clear? I am so confused!

I guess I'm lucky? I have a really old FW on my two drives Model: ST31000340AS, Firmware: SD04 , so I guess I don't need to upgrade since its not the effected fw, both have been running fine since I got them about a year ago.

Bought a 500 GB ST3500320AS back in late April/early May.

I haven't had a single problem with it, but because I had the SD15 firmware, I flashed it.

Everything seems fine for now, but I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

My friend has a ST3500620AS, it's one of the affected models, but I can't find the firmware update anywhere, it's been pulled down ?

So I found out that many of the hard drives we've installed in machines at work were of the ST3500320AS variety with SD15.

I upgraded one hard drive today, went flawlessly.

I am in the process of writing up a procedure for customers... fun stuff.

Upgraded my ST3500320AS with firmware SD15 to the SD1A
Did a video and wrote some annotations http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRKu-ub6hlc&fmt=18
The process take less than a minute, but since this was my first time I took a while to read.

Just skip to the Important parts:
3:25: Finished Reading pressed ESC
3:51 Checking My Drive Model and Firmware
4:15 Confirming it is a ST3500320AS
4:31 Pressing A to install corresponding firmware
5:09 Finished installing firmware and power cycling
7:00 All my partions were conserved
7:27 Confirmed, SD1A is installed (couldn't focus, trust me)

Downloaded firmware from here http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207951
Burned it to a CD
Rebooted
The firmware updater loads, pressed ESC
Pressed S to scan and it showed me my drive model.
Pressed "A" to install firmware corresponding to my drive
A few seconds, process complete, press any key to power cycle.

^ Thanks for posting that. I did the upgrade last night and everything went smoothly, but it was reassuring to have your post as a guide :)

Thanks for the warning... I was about to buy a Seagate drive, because of their (usual) reliability.

Now, I'm wondering... Is there a brand you would suggest to buy reliable HDD ?

Do I need to upgrade if my firmware is SD81? 3500320AS drive.
No. Only the firmwares listed in the article.

AD14, SD15, SD16, SD17, SD18, SD19

That AD14 sure looks like a typo... they probably meant SD but who knows.
