People around the world are asked what they think of America (video)

Do you think the average citizen of Australia or France could easily locate Philidelphia on the map?
Along similar lines, I always think it's funny when non-Americans talk shit about how so many Americans can't identify accents, as if they would be able to come here and tell the difference between the various accents in different states.

Ok so he said created the internet interpretation invented which was the US and no one is talking about the WWW.

I was mainly referring to the games comment, because I assume he was thinking Japan invented video games which is not even close.

That list said allot of inaccurate things, he mentioned websites, cars and electricity which is ridiculous. A simple google search will reveal allot.

Ask me to perform my best American accent and I'll present to you my cowboy redneck southern English like there's no tomorrow.

Jokes aside, patriotism is the most prominent thing i noticed. Americans are way more attracted to their identity as an abstract ideal of a nation than to its actual history, for obvious reasons.

Damnn some of you in here. This was supposed to be fun.

NeoGAF is american. Checkmate atheists

Local dialects don't count. It's more about identifying languages or variations of English (or generally the big languages of the world -- things we'd consider universal knowledge). We would say "that's Arabic" instead of knowing the exact local dialect. That alone is sufficient; however, so many prefer to say something very broad like European or Asian accent.

Interesting video for sure even though the responses were somewhat predictable as soon as they displayed where each person was from.

lol

And this is way the rest of the world thinks of you as assholes.

Until you find out someone said the US is crap. Then you want them bombed. Even if you had no idea where these people live.

Classy both ways.

LOL

I mean, Americans are so patriotic because our country is easy to love. It has so many great things going for it. I can understand why it's hard to be patriotic if you live in a frigid dump like say, Canada.

America is pretty crap sometimes but usually when I interact with people from other countries it makes me really glad to be surrounded by Americans. Australians are cool though.

Not even gonna lie, I know they exist based on how passionately people hate them, but I've never met an American seriously chanting anything like what people are saying. Maybe I just get lucky with who I run into.

It's likely because we are well aware of how others see us and don't want to give you a bad impression. At this point it's been drilled into us that the world thinks we are massively obese dumbasses who can't even point out where the ocean is.

All these people bashing America but then it's all "America why don't you take more refugees?" or "America, you're always so arrogant about being the world police and you spend way too much on the military but could you just help us out and stop Putin. We tried throwing health care and 'Most Admired' polls at him but the tanks just ran them over." I just wish people were nicer, you know. It hurts sometimes, man, and we just want to be appreciated. That's all. Just a thank you once in a while.

It's a global market and the culture I consume is from all around the world. I could easily live without American culture as others would increase culture export in the vacuum.

Your culture export is so high just simply due to your size (economic) and your reach (imperialism).

The key thing though is I am not envy of America. In fact, the opposite, I feel bad for most Americans that they don't get to experience the progress that the rest of the modern world is going through in things like healthcare, income equality, social acceptance, etc.

Plus statistically, my country is the most admired in the world, so I'm happy. Oh, and I think about it because I care about the global community.

That's just how it is, they hate us for stepping up and hate us when we back down and let other countries deal with their own problems.

Make up your minds guys.

If the real world was like Civ 5 we would've won a cultural victory like 45 years ago.

The US did win a cultural victory 45 years ago. Now we're just in the post-game mode where we screw around and cause trouble. Any day now those stockpiles of nukes are gonna go off just to use them before starting a new game.

Tokyo, Shanghai & Dubai are my bros.

If I were asked the same about other countries I don't know what I'd say, other then I'd love to visit some day.

If I were to impart something to other countries is the sheer size of America. People like to do 1:1 comparisons with our country to theirs but they fail to realize just how gigantic this country is. It's hard for even Americans to describe ourselves because we're so segmented into different regions. I've met so many foreign students that are surprised to learn how long it would take to drive to certain places.

This. People don't realize that the distance between New York and LA is almost twice the distance between London and Moscow. Almost all of Europe would fit inside the continental US.

The rest of the world wonders why we don't travel. We do. We just don't need to travel outside the US to go somewhere 'foreign' to us. We have Florida for that.

As the French woman said, American can be sub-par at geography.
Why, just this week I was discussing a news story with a friend regrading the Indonesian Island of Java and she said "Java? Is that a thing?".
I can assure you it would be similar if you mentioned Adelaide.
Adelaide, what's that, something you put on your toast?

Geography, like basic math, is something I can have my phone know for me. I don't need to waste time thinking about something I can readily look up at almost any instant.

Google-fu!

We'll just take the following back if you're not feeling us:

Rock
Rap
Blues
R&B
Techno
House
Electricity
Computers
Videogames
Cars
Planes
Internet
Neogaf
Windows
OS X
Every website ever
Every movie ever
Marvel comics
DC comics
Your favorite TV shows
etc etc etc

Forgive us if we take back our language, our justice system, and the rest of the world takes back it's religion, it's philosophy, the numeric system etc, art. Video games/
OK, you guys win on the TV shows despite a handful of BBC programs

I think it's partly that the US is a very young and very wealthy country, that think above others.

I think not knowing is not the issue, but rather that not knowing reflects an attitude of indifference about the world and other places that most see add the real issue.

Go ahead, we speak American here.

Also, you lost the rights to the rest when you lost the Revolutionary War. God bless George Washington.

I laughed too hard at this

We get it. We're fat. We're not all movie stars and cowboys though, and plenty of us don't have shit for opportunities.

First pic was pretty good, funny.

If we're all listing... when thinking of the US, I often think of truckers, patriotism and nationalism, McDonalds, serial killers and mass shootings.

So true. The kids and I are visiting Arizona in October. There are like cactuses (cacti?), scorpions, rattlesnakes and shit. Totally foreign to us in Minnesota.

The average person in every country is uneducated, lazy, unhealthy, and thinks other countries suck.

That's why they're average.

We just have the most famous dumb slobs in the world. That's why we're known for it.
