People thought the PS2 couldn't do 480p

Anyone remember those days? The pages of passionate arguments (mostly from bereaved DC fanboys), the bans, the name-calling, the technical details. What a show! GG "Grassmoker" - you tried so hard.

Unfortunately, by the time 480p PS2 games did start coming out, the crow was a little too old and cold to be served properly.

Even 480p was surpassed, just look at GT4.

Holy SHIT!

How could I forget! Thanks for the reminder...much crow has been served and eatened! Those haters are in for a world of hurt, eh? *lightly elbows Demigod Mac while smirking*

No offense, what's the point of this thread?

Necessary disclaimer: Note, I wasn't one of those described here. Back in the DC, early PS2 days, I didn't even know wtf 480p was or meant. :)

at least we didnt have any shipping problems

No point really. Just remembering back in the day. And makes you wonder how today's 25 page threads of people bickering will go down 5 years from now.

Considering the majority of amercian gamers and pretty much 99% of PAL gamers wont be playing games in HD even next gen, id have to say such a feature is vastly over-exposed.

Hmmm, heard lotsa goings-on about PS2 not being able to pull off proprer AA and such, but nobody I knew seemed to be worried about PS2 doing 480p (like Mejilan said lotsa people didn't yet know what 480p was!) Course I wasn't even a lurker here till last year, so I complely missed the battle here, just don't remember it going on anywhere else.

This thread reminds me of the awesomeness that was IGNDC!

HALF FRAME BUFFER INTERLACING 4MB VRAM WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT

i hereby predict that "no hdr with aa" will be this generation's version

I wasn't on these boards in this precambrian era you speak of. I will say that it was a big debate on wether the PS2 could do lots of things and in most regards it's exceeded alot of the goals most figured it'd never get to- better textures, AA, 480P. It's definetly weaker then an xbox but who gives a crap, as always its the games that matter and whichever system has the games you like is the one that you'll enjoy more.

Playing Soul Calibur on a VGA Box kicks ass
fuck playing Tekken Tag on a RCA connection

fucking PS2 idiots :lol :lol

Uh huh. Except, playing Soul Calibur 2 at 480p in real anamorphic widescreen is even better.

Personally, when back then I was a DC fan, I dont think the issue was if it could display 480p... it's pretty obvious it had the display mode to reach and far exceed that resolution, what with the first images of a PS2 linux system hitting pretty early on as I remember, with the console hooked up to a PC LCD screen...

The issue has always been if it would be a practical thing.

Crickets in your head? Read the thread.

Whats up with the sound column. I am pretty sure both SSX Tricky and Vice City were DTS yet it has Tricky as PLII and Vice City as 4.0...what the heck is 4.0? Isnt that what GT3 used?

Most of this stuff is user-submitted, and not always checked, so some of it is wrong. SSX Tricky, SSX3 and Vice City are all 4.0 DTS. There are a few more PS2 games that are as well. This means 4.0 IN-GAME. It's not all that effective, but certainly better than stereo.

Some people think they get french benefits. Stupid fuckers.

Wow. I am literally SHOCKED this thread wasn't actually a rouse to have a platform to say, "See, because PS2 eventually got some sort of HD support even though people didn't think it would, Revolution eventually will too!"

Where have all the nbots gone?

will revolution even take component or dvi cables? current gamecubes don't.

ps2 > revolution :o

I think they confirmed Pro Scan, yeah. Better buy one early though, just in case. :D

wow, if it wasn't for Namco, that list would be pretty pathetic...
More notable, I think are SCE developed games. They probably have even higher consistency of 480p support than Namco. Only recently has PS2's 480p situation become satisfactory, IMO. Nowadays, almost every visually worthy Ps2 game supports progressive. It used to be very different though.

Ah yes. Once the first batch of 480p PS2 games came out, the ever-determined fanboys backpedaled from "PS2 can't do 480p AT ALL, EVER, IT'S TECHNICALLY IMPOSSIBLE!" ... to ... "But only a few games support it...."

Ummmm...the Gamecube lineup consists of some of the most impressive progressive scan games.

F-Zero GX pefect example.

*Edit, sorry forgot that the newer Gamecube models don't have it.

i'm sure i'll get burninated for this but i've thought for some time that the PS2-only crowd are going to be the most wowed this coming gen given that Xbots and Nbots have had progscan support up the wazzo for _this_ gen.

Undocumented libraries and all that jazz, PS2 libraries and tools were very poor during the it's initial outings. A lot of devs then only used half buffer trying to save space and stuff because they didn't grasp a lot of how PS2 was suppose to work and so a lot of crap was assumed amoung gamers about the PS2 like stupid crap with comparing how the edram on PS2 working like regular vram like DC, in which case I saw lovely things like PS2 couldn't handle Street Fighter 3 or Marvel versus Capcom because "OMG, too little vram!!!" Geez if that's the case Xbox is in hell of a problem with it's no "vram"!!!

Boy, fanboy tech wars was fun back in the day.

Well, the PS2 does have a problem with textures. It took a good long while for developers to pull the utmost from the machine and get it to display decently. If you look at some of the best looking games on the machine they are all quite monocromatic. This is mostly due to most textures being 64x64x16 colors. Metal Gear Solid 3, Ico, Collosus, Killzone, God of War all have environments with a sameness in the palette. The moment more color is added or needed the texture resolution drops like in games like Jak.

If anything the PS2 did force developers to work a lot more efficiently and a whole shit load of techniques were used. Best things that came out of the PS2 era were frame buffer tricks, reliance on instancing, and improved lighting concepts. Generally artist had to be really clever to make things look as good as they could. In the end it only helped matters.

i was at the forefront of DC wankery, and i don't even remember this 480p argument! infact, back in the days of the DC, i doubt i even knew what 480p was...

I know a load of people go on about how bad Sega fans are going on and on and on but hell,it seems like it's now the Sony fanboys can't stop going on about the DC vs PS2 days - i'm guessing they are trying to rally themselve into thinking history repeats itself with PS3 vs X360?

It wasn't just Sega fanboys back then but they were the majority. Anyone that was here near the PS2 launch knows how crazy DC fanboys got.

I was here and i was one of the DC Fanboys - i'm just saying, i don't remember it at all :}

I remember all the other stuff, but not this one. Hmmm...

Haha with Sega's ad like that it didn't help either!! Good old Sega always taking shots at the others. I still remember when they shotgunned a N64 in a commericial and threw a PS1 out a building saying "Fly plaything, fly..." or something during the Saturn days. Fun times had by all and I considered myself a Sega fan, but that was then, now I'm more indifferent to them.

Graphics were the main issue that DC fans were going after so it was probably in there. Every PS2 game released at the start got it really bad from them. The hatred surrounding the PS2 by DC fans around that time was amazing.

Wasn't there huge ass threads started about Ridge Racer's initial pics and if they were real?

i'm starting to think i was late to the war...

i remember getting myself in quite a flap over The Getaway but not Ridge. Oh... hold on...
i know why - i wasn't a GAF'er then!

Damn i missed all the fun.
