ok, since we've been a bit off topic anyway:

-only SMT ive played is Nocturne, which is brilliant but unforgivably hard as shit goes on...i will finish it one day, though. are there any others in the series that absolutely must be played? unlike persona, this series carries plot bits over, yeah?

-I adored P3 FES, and lost a chunk of my life to it. i put down 4 early on for fear of the same, and only a handful of characters'd introduced themselves...do they get better/more interesting? cause someone else made the comment in this thread, but im not getting the vie i did with SEES and that crew. i know the system's improved, which is great, but im hoping it didnt come with a dropoff of character/plot.

To counter Varna:

Character development in P4 is light-years beyond most JRPG work. No forgetting characters exist for long stretches, no unrealistic melodrama, no lolandroids, no irritating kids. Alot of it rather subtle, either in how a change comes about, or how the previous unhealthy habits and neurosis are shown...or hidden (one character in particular was headed for a NASTY attitude before boss-fight readjustment. Few talk about her as if they even caught it).

The game's full of life-like little touches, foreshadowing, or aftershocks of stuff that happened. It's not perfect, but I for one am glad that the rather faux heavy shonen tropes of P3 went away for the sequel.

in persona, they're all irritating kids :)

I was hoping for SMT4. I'll take a new Persona, providing they take it out of the school setting.

Not sure if that would happen. P1, P2 IS & EP, P3 and P4 all had a high school setting. Besides, Persona 3 and 4 created an SMT boom that brought a lot of new people to the SMT bandwagon. If anything, they'll capitalize on the new fanbase.

I was more referring to going through something like a work day as opposed to a school day. I believe Nich Maragos mentioned they might be doing something to that effect with a new Persona on a Retronauts podcast awhile back.

Aren't there plenty or JRPGs on that system already? :lol

Umm...no? Just because the subgenre is horribly lacking on consoles this generation doesn't mean that the console with the most games of the subgenre is flourishing with them.

P2 EP didn't have a high-school setting all the main characters were adults from memory, and persona 2 barely had a high-school setting, since you didn't go to school on a constant basis like persona 3 & 4.:lol

Meh, I rather want a main SMT announcement or another one like DSS. I haven't tried Persona games and don't feel the concept is that interesting, looks too anime-ish and much grinding going on imo. But maybe it's better in execution than what's written in paper.

Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey, and Blue Dragon (might've been standard, was anything but crappy) say no.

No sir. Tales of Vesperia, Star ocean 4(sans the cutscenes), Blue Dragon, and Lost Odyssey were all quality.
God you people, do you honestly think those didn't cross his mind at all when he was posting? Why must you fall for the bait like that?

This "news" is probably fake or just random guesswork, but considering how much more popular the Persona franchise has become in recent years, it might make more sense to start out with a title like that for a HD game, since it's not only strong in Japan but in the West as well. Maybe it'll become the new main series!
I fucking hope not.

The announcement of a teaser site to a countdown site leading to TGS?
No, the teaser site for the game SMT: Strange Journey, to be revealed later this week and to be released Oct 8 (which is after TGS).

Can't a company just announce a game, then release it a few months later? Why must there be so much rumors and speculations and countdowns to announcements of announcements?

Because there are forums of rabid internet trolls scouring the web for the slightest bit of news on their favourite franchises?

Didn't a junior member get banned for posting similar information in that Atlus website thread?

But this is quite interesting. I do worry though. Atlus never really makes games that look top shelf, and on a platform like the PS3, I think it should at least use the systems resources effectively. I don't want another ugly game that could easily be done on the PS2 or even the PSP, as was the case with Disgaea 3 and Cross Edge, HD text and static art notwithstanding.

P4 also has a cute comic relief mascot and a former pop idol with a cute way of talking and a crush on the main character. Whether or not those are better or worse than an android and a kid is hard to say. And I'm not sure it's fair to say it's really so incredibly different from most jrpgs. Neither is P3 of course, they both have fairly simple plots full of dumb stereotypical tropes, even if I like P3's a lot more.

I mean both games end with
a bunch of teenagers yelling at a dark god about how the world is worth saving
, which would fit just fine in every single other jrpg ever. I found P4's ending much more unbearable in that regard but maybe because I started it up just after I had finished P3 and was less tolerant. Regardless, you can't play the last few hours of either game and hold on to some pretentious notion of how much better they are than all the others as far as depth of storytelling.

But actually somebody earlier said that P4 is a lot darker than P3 and I can't even begin to understand where THAT would come from. If anything it's the exact opposite of the truth. I don't want to start spoiling stuff since people here haven't played it but P4 is much more happy go lucky pretty much the whole way through. That doesn't necessarily make it a worse game depending on what you want out of it, but I don't think you can objectively say P4 is a darker game than P3.

Retard from Sankaku posts rumor with spin that's p. blatantly wrong to anyone that can read Japanese, news from whenever he moved beyond posting the screenshots of director's cuts of moecrap.

I mean, not like it'd be any big surprise to be in the works, it's a popular recent franchise but niche enough where the PS3 is viable, but I'm still even inclined to think that the pachinko site taking their article down is more to get the traffic to go away than anything. People need to learn to read the words "maybe" or "perhaps" or "rumored", or at least stop paying attention to bloggers that deliberately leave them out to drive traffic.

I have to say the removal of the Persona 5 blurb has sparked my curiousity though, Hmm.

It's probably to cover it up, though it's too late.

I guess it's like information about Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia being leaked 5 or so months before the game actually got announced.

Imo is too early for Persona 5 to be announced. I expect SMT4 before it.

No way P4 is darker than P3. I played both to completion and P4 is far more lighthearted in plot, development and characters.

It is, but its probably in an early production phase already.

So is this leaning more towards mistake, speculation, or true?
Mistake/Speculation.

However, I think it's pretty much a given that Persona 5 will be on the PS3(60). I just don't expect the announcement until after SMT4's.

Why does a new main line SMT have to come before a new Persona? There was no new SMT for the PS1 when Persona 1 and 2 came out. Its not like Persona couldn't be the lead thing this time and have all the other SMT titles re-use it's designs.

P4 already came out before STM4 so that isn't the issue.

The issue is that they risk tiring out persona and not resolving the end of STM: Nocturne.

Besides I've had enough "friendship is cool" stuff, I damn well expect the next game to send me into clinical depression.

oh yes, please! persona 5 on PS3, finally in HD. they sure were hasty to remove that sweet dream out of their website.

leak of the year if true.

While I'd much rather see SMTIV before P5, anything involving a SMT game on a current-gen console (especially PS3) is awesome enough for me.

I think they'd be far smarter releasing Persona 5 before SMT4. Persona 5 will bring the popularity of the series to the current-gen consoles, and probably give a big sales boost to SMT4.
