Persona 5 Review Thread

I find the idea that RDR 2 will beat Zelda's 97 only plausible if the game benefits from the usual Rockstar review score inflation (I also think a 97 is a bit too high for Zelda as well - should be say 95 with its technical issues). If we go by scores I will eat my hat if any big game beats Zelda's 97.

Still, very interested to see RDR 2, I never got that far in the original but enjoyed it for what it was. On the other hand, getting pretty burned out on GTA games...

This doesn't even make sense, that's not how MC works...

I finally finished Persona 4 Golden and had a great time at the start of the year. However I didn't enjoy the grinding and combat much at all. I don't think I have time for another 100+ hour game in my life right now so I am going to wait.

However glad to see its acing it in reviews.

The ordering by grade in review threads needs to stop. It's like the highest grades hold more value than the others. (I would actually remove the grades altogether and let people discuss the actual reviews/impressions).

And on topic, really great seeing this renaissance of Japanese 3rd party games. I lean more towards their game design philosophies, putting style and soul in the front row, instead of obsession for the technical side of things. (I know, why not both, etc, but if I had to choose, give me memorable experiences).

What's there to explain though? An "engine" is just a mix of the code base of the software, and whatever development tools were customized or written from ground up to allow the development team to plug assets they work on into the game. Not every game is developed with a modular reusable engine that is a complete suite which can be easily used across all titles within the studio. There is no indication that they created such an engine. They just made Persona 5.

Considering the programmers on the Persona team will be moving on to make more Persona stuff and/or the new fantasy project, they probably aren't in a position to provide technical support for what they used in Persona 5 to another team. If the SMT team isn't familiar with the Persona 5 tech, it would be easier for them to just use something off the shelf that comes with dedicated support from the engine providers instead. It's not particularly strange or mysterious.
Thanks for the deets! I guess it doesn't hurt that licensing costs and such for UE4 are relatively low, so going in-house isn't really a massive cost savings.

Edit: Eventhough I'd like a funny OT title as much as everybody, should we put a "Game is standalone, join the Phantom Thieves!" or something like that? There is quite a big amount of people asking if they can start with P5.

Probably should be at the top of the OT OP and highlighted as much as possible. But I think you're right, it's probably best if the title for the OT was something like:

[OT] Persona 5 OT - 'Witty OT title' (Standalone - playing older games not required)

It's great that we now have a big influx of people that never played Persona before and want to pick up this game, but having to constantly answer the same question over and over again two or three or more times a page will tire us all out eventually. And the more people we can get to pick up the game the better (both for the sake of the series and JRPGs as a whole). Worked for the Yakuza 0 OT.

Well, I said it because only a fraction of those that could be interested in the game will come to the OT and ask about it. Most may think "I have to play 4 games to catch up? Pff, I pass."

Doing something similar to Yakuza 0 or Ys Origins would be cool. By I'm all for a witty OT title too. Hope both fit!

I think I'm done with Zelda now, and the reviews (even though I didn't enjoy 4G profusely) are really starting to generate some sort of hype for this for me now.

Bloodborne got over 30 GOTYs and it's niche.

Horizon will get at least 30.

That being said, let's not derail the thread and get banned for this lol.

It got 30 GOTY because the people who run the websites that dished it out are likely hardcore gamers, more inclined to play, enjoy and vote for something like Bloodborne as the GOTY. Its Quality did not translate to huge sales though, and still only sells to a niceh in the market, but it's the reason why I can see Persona 5 definitely getting some GOTY nods when the time comes, but I do think Zelda, Horizon and Mario will get the most this year.

No way José. Mario is bigger than Zelda to most people, and this is going to be a triumphant return of sandbox Mario. Mark my words.

I'd argue a big 3D Zelda is a bigger deal for critics than a big 3D Mario.

But I wouldn't be surprised at all if Odyssey is the better game.

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.
Come on guys, Shenmue III is planned for this year, it will obviously be the GOTY.

Damn, I'm jealous dude. I originally had an order with them, but I received a gift voucher that covered the game on amazon, so it's release day for me Hah.

Fucking amazing! As usual for the franchise! I love that the series grows in popularity with each installment. Hopefully it does super well

Can someone explain to me why saying "Yu is the best husbando!!" or simply asking "Is P5 going to be released on PC eventually?" isn't tolerated here but saying "Horizon/Zelda/RDR2 GOTY" in a P5 review thread is accepted?
I don't mind either one. But since rules are always evolving here I just want to be sure.

There's been a standing forum policy against port begging for years and years. There isn't a policy against wondering what the game of the year will be. It's close to derailing, but I think it's an organic conversation to have in a thread that involves GOTY-level reviews.

Thanks for the explanation.

Worry not, fans of western studios. The onslaught of great Japanese games is fully contained thanks to Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands and Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Seriously, good job Japan. Hurray for competition!

At the same, any kind of serious conversation about what will be GOTY, in March, is pretty fucking silly. We've got 9 more months of games coming out people.

You do realise that the new Ghost recon is actually good game, right?

Curious question - can something that sells over 2 million (this was 2015 https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps4s-bloodborne-sells-2-million/1100-6430572/) be niche? I think it's the 4th highest exclusive in sales.

That's what everyone kept saying until they convinced me.

The definition of "niche market" backs that up too.

Shiiiiet.. My local retailer has the copies ready.

congrats in advance.

5 hours in and I'm LOVING it.
