Persona 5 Review Thread

Amazing to see it score so highly, though it's very much deserved. Not including the story (since that's subjective), everything else has been vastly improved.

Shit I didn't realise this would review so well. The gameplay looks a lot like Cyber Sleuth, is that correct? Did that game use Persona's mechanics?

Yep, Cyber Sleuth battle system is similar. But Persona battle systems are more engaging and fun by a huge margin. And challenging in a fairer way, if you set a higher difficulty.

Edit: Eventhough I'd like a funny OT title as much as everybody, should we put a "Game is standalone, join the Phantom Thieves!" or something like that? There is quite a big amount of people asking if they can start with P5.

Not surprised at all; but still getting super excited at the unanimous praise. Pretty sure the average review score will climb from here as more reviews come in.

I am ready for more Persona goodness in my life.

I watched a couple of Spanish reviews yesterday, and it looked like the reviewers didn't know anything about combat mechanics. They mentioned that exploiting the enemies' weaknesses was a big improvement, also getting extra turns when you exploited those weaknesses. They found it great to negociate with demons, in order to get items, money, or convince them to join us as Personas.

This is Shin Megami Tensei IV in the end. Apparently making the combat more SMT-style was a great factor for the franchise. Weird to see most reviewers didn't like negotiations in SMT overall.

As a SMT fan, that loves the combat system, negotiations, and the demons, all I can say is that I cannot wait for this game. Also traditional dungeons are welcomed, I didn't like those boring procedural dungeons of P3 and P4.

There were demon negotiations in persona 1 and both 2s as well. It's not an exclusively SMT thing, but many people didn't play too many Atlus games outside of Nocturne and Persona 4 and perhaps 3.

Hope the social links are better than 4. 4 felt way too forced. Had no real connection to the characters and all of a sudden I'm confessing to one? Hope the story is better too. Gameplay is all I know I'm gonna like at the very least.

Zelda should pretty much sweep that unless RDR 2 comes out this year. Persona 5 seems like it'll sweep up the RPG of the year awards for the most part unless I'm missing certain RPGs.

I feel like Zelda will suffer from its early release, and its memory will be waning, with RDR2's relentlessly potato chip multiplayer burning hot in everyone's veins during goty deliberations.

Depends if Horizon is put in the RPG category I guess.

Zelda in the RPG category. RIP.

You are forgetting the DLC updates in Summer and Winter. If the new story dungeon DLC delivers at the end of the year, it'll be fresh in everyone's minds again.

Already anticipating the GOTY bloodbath.
Zelda is a lock-in for number one and likely deserved this time (I'm about to start playing it) unlike Skyward Sword. ;)
What will be interesting is the next five spots to follow, that will be a tight race. Especially if RDR2 and/or God of War makes 2017.

Already anticipating the GOTY bloodbath.

1. Zelda
2. Persona 5
3. Horizon
4. Resident Evil 7
5. Nier
6. Nioh
7. Yakuza 0
8. Gravity Rush
9. Hollow Knight
10. whatever

Something like that. Not sure about RDR2 and GT Sport releasing this year, but it's usually a good bet to pick games that are a) good and b) sold well because the potential voter pool matters, as rankings are determined by the quantity of votes and not the average points per mention.

Do not write off Mario Odyssey and NNK2 baby! Also I feel Destiny 2+Battlefront 2 might be surprisingly well received.

Destiny 2 is this year.

Get ready to see lots of robbing this year

Prey might also be a DOOM-style sleeper hit, and Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite should be a groovy time.

But Zelda is a lock for #1. The year of Death Stranding vs. The Last of Us Part II vs. FFVIIR should be interesting, though.

I know it is a long shot but what if .... WHAT .... IF David Cage has suddenly learnt how to tell a story? 2017 is magical enough to make that happen.

You're right. I was forgetting about that. Fingers crossed it puts Zelda's most imaginative foot forward.

I thought all the DLC was the costume packs. There's going to be new dungeons for real?

Oh FFS 2107 will you please just end! At this rate I'll be looking at a second job by the end of next month.

I can honestly say I can't wait for a bit of a lull just so I have enough time to play all these games. After buying Horizon, NieR and Kingdom Hearts (tomorrow) I was gonna give P5 a miss, but reading a few reviews It's creeping up my must buy list.

I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask, but was it ever explained why P5's engine isn't being used for the SMT anniversary project? UE4 seems like an odd choice given that P5's development environment doesn't come across as an unscalable unsalvageable omnishambles.

I'd hate for any engine issues to make churning out those P5 spinoffs any more difficult :p

Sheeeeeit.

P4G is a top 10 all time game for me. Can't wait until I can afford to play this. What a fucken year it's been so far for games.

What's there to explain though? An "engine" is just a mix of the code base of the software, and whatever development tools were customized or written from ground up to allow the development team to plug assets they work on into the game. Not every game is developed with a modular reusable engine that is a complete suite which can be easily used across all titles within the studio. There is no indication that they created such an engine. They just made Persona 5.

Considering the programmers on the Persona team will be moving on to make more Persona stuff and/or the new fantasy project, they probably aren't in a position to provide technical support for what they used in Persona 5 to another team. If the SMT team isn't familiar with the Persona 5 tech, it would be easier for them to just use something off the shelf that comes with dedicated support from the engine providers instead. It's not particularly strange or mysterious.

This has to be the highest rated JRPG in a long time. Looking forward to playing it alongside Horizon over the summer. Also, I am happy with the visuals, despite not being technically top tier. The art is fantastic.

Zelda should pretty much sweep that unless RDR 2 comes out this year. Persona 5 seems like it'll sweep up the RPG of the year awards for the most part unless I'm missing certain RPGs.

I find the idea that RDR 2 will beat Zelda's 97 only plausible if the game benefits from the usual Rockstar review score inflation (I also think a 97 is a bit too high for Zelda as well - should be say 95 with its technical issues). If we go by scores I will eat my hat if any big game beats Zelda's 97.

Still, very interested to see RDR 2, I never got that far in the original but enjoyed it for what it was. On the other hand, getting pretty burned out on GTA games...

I love the art style and concept of the game (slice of life mixed with rpg) but i never could get past the sheer repetitiveness and the grinding aspect of it.

Great reviews...but I I am absolutely not surprised since all the french import reviews were stellar, higher than P4G (I remember Gamekult giving a 9 which is really, REALLY rare)
