You're making mad progress, and I'm sure the story has your interest.
Oh, absolutely. Maya and co. have already displaced P4's characters as my absolute favourite cast in SMT, Kaneko's artwork and character designs is at the absolute apex of his career, the soundtrack is amazing and the story stands out as unique even in the golden age of RPGs that was the late 90's.
It's just that the game has some baffingly awful design choices that fester through nearly every aspect. The interface is clunky, the fights are boring and last too long, the game is ridiculously bad at explaining its mechanics and you're basically lost without a guide, and the biggest draw of the game, having dozens of Personae that can be freely swapped out at any time, giving you precise control over your team members' abilities and letting you switch strategies on the fly, is bogged down by ranking Personae up, having to learn new fusion spells, and the general hassle of knowing which Persona is worth using. The huge amount of freedom that the game gives you is let down by its shoddy implementation.
I don't know how much EP-Portable fixed, but I imagine it at least acknowledged some of those problems.
