A verdict has been reached in the sentencing phase of the Scott Peterson murder trial.

The verdict will be announced at 1:30 p.m. (4:30 p.m. ET).

The announcement of a verdict came on the third day of jury deliberations over the sentence Peterson should receive for killing his wife and their unborn son.

Earlier Monday, jurors asked to see autopsy photographs of Peterson's wife, Laci, and their unborn son........

That's not the only reason but it's definitely a major part. Still, you have to admit that the media like exploiting the victimization of pretty, young white women. How about that other recent one that they tried to run with? You know, the one where the fiance had lied about his identity? Too bad for them, he confessed too quickly so they weren't able to squeeze every last drop of viewership out of it. Another example of this phenomenon would be the whole Jessica Lynch fiasco.

I can agree that the media played a HUGE part in it all, and color might have even played a part. But I still think the main reason was the baby.

She was murdered on/around Christmas Eve (part of the biggest holiday of the year, regardless if you are Christian or not)

She was carrying an unborn baby.

The top suspect was a man that many concidered "Mr. Perfect"

Scott was represented by Mark Geragos, a very very high profile attorney.

"The People," mostly white, middle class, suburbanites can relate to the setting, people, and overall vibe of the whole story.

The fact is this case played out like some sort of real life reality TV show. The story is totally a-typical of what goes on in a suburban town.

"African American male bystander catches bullet in gangland crossfire." is hardly news, to the masses at least. Hell "Rural Michigan meth explosion" isn't news either, you can BET thatl the parties involved with THAT one are Klan robe white. Nobody is scrambling to report on the droves of white females that get raped in Chip Hills...

But I will empathize with the general tone of your post. There was that one time when the media seemed to go "Kidnap Krazy," for a few months. The stale, little blonde girl get's kidnapped and killed theme went shoved down our throats while one truly extrordanary story fell by the wayside after a few days.

But the Peterson story, was infact, unique. Not saying that I cared about it all that much, but hell, it even sparked another conservative attempt to ban abortions. Concider that when you make more pleas for mediafocus on the black community.
