Xbox CEO Phil Spencer emphasized that Xbox is determined to win by leveraging the power of its hardware. He stated that the company’s focus is on creating innovative hardware that can win over gamers through superior performance, rather than relying solely on exclusive games. Spencer explained that by making games like Minecraft and Fortnite available across platforms, Xbox aims to win the trust of players everywhere. Ultimately, he reiterated that hardware is at the heart of Xbox’s strategy to win in the competitive gaming market and continue achieving success.
Parris Lily asked Xbox CEO Phil Spencer, "there is concern in the community that if you're putting games on other platforms, why would I still want an Xbox when I can get that experience on another platform?"

Xbox CEO Phil Spencer described how Xbox can win using hardware innovation, rather than exclusive games. "I want people to pick hardware based on the capabilities of that hardware, and how that fits into the choices they want to make about where they want to play. We want our hardware to win based on the hardware capabilities that we have."

Spencer described how the most successful games in 2025 are simply games that are everywhere, describing games like Fortnite, Minecraft, and so on. "I want to build a platform that services creators that are trying to meet people on every screen." Spencer reiterated previous comments from the likes of Xbox president Sarah Bond that the firm remains all-in on hardware, describing it as "fundamental" to Xbox. "On our own hardware, I think it's fundamental to what Xbox is. It's not lost on me that "box" is in the name of our brand. I say from the position that I'm in, I look at hardware as a critical part of what we do, while not trying to gatekeep the games off of other places."

Look at the PS2, are learn. You do not sell hardware, based on hardware. You sell hardware based on software. PS2 was a garbage machine as far as hardware goes, but it had a garden of EXCLUSIVE games, it's not rocket science. Good exclusive games, and a consistent release schedule, that is what builds an audience, and brand loyalty.

Power race has never won anything.

The PS4 won on the back of its price and games. The fact that it was more powerful was just the cherry on top.

Xbox need to get this power race out of their head. The Series X is more powerful than a PS5 (on paper).

Just goes to show that even now they have no idea what people want.

So they are committed to releasing another console then? Curious to see what capabilities it has and how they think it will sway so many people who have been won over by Playstation. Perhaps he knows they will have at least 30 to 40 million devoted brand loyalists who will support their next system regardless. That may be enough in his mind to keep a solid base of consoles and gamepass subs brining in revenue from the hardware front. The games that go multi platform will make lots of money for them and subsidize a good amount not being made from the hardware side. All just theories on my end but who really knows anymore.

One big mistake of not releasing a midgen refresh is that at launch the PS6 is going to have so much more content that doesn't need to be patched that will be significantly more enhanced than xbox versions of games.

That combined with better/more cross gen titles...

Not only is Microsoft forfeiting the next 3 years to the PS5 Pro, but they're also limiting themselves out of the gates.

Indeed, generations are getting longer, I don’t see PS6 coming until 2028

Microsoft - let’s mandate that all games until next gen have to run on a potato

Fine. That's what helped the 360. It was the best way to play multiplats. Hasn't been the case since the Xbox 1 though. Not even the Series X, which was supposed to have a hardware advantage, didn't in the end. Microsoft would need to go with Nvidia and have DLSS4 along with vastly better RT to give a hardware advantage over the PS6. Can't see it happening though as it would cost a lot more to than the PS6.

Yeah but you're not competing very well in the hardware race either. At the lower end of the hardware market the PS5 slim digital edition offers better value for your dollar compared to the Series S and at the higher end the PS5 Pro offers better performance than your most powerful piece of hardware which is the Series X (albeit at a higher price). Sony is beating you when it comes to the value they offer and the power they offer with their hardware.

You're also behind when it comes to controller technology and you don't offer the range of peripherals that the PS5 has. You haven't released a handheld PC yet and by the time you do, the Steam Deck 2 will probably be out and there will possibly be even more competitors in that market. And even if there aren't many more competitors, the ones that are there will have had multiple generations to refine their designs and build their user base.

You're beating the competition when it comes to your subscription service, but on the hardware front? Nope, you're being outmatched.

Then stop making things that are incredibly similar to PlayStations and make them a gen behind the more powerful thing you can clearly afford to make and sell at a loss to take people away from Sony.

They won't do this though because they are content to be selling their games to the most amount of people via multiplatform to cover the costs of buying the devs and making them.

They still haven't learned that power doesn't sell consoles. It's incredible how stubborn CEOs can be. The ship is sinking rapidly but he still won't budge.

As far as i know you are not allowed to sell things with a huge loss and you also would just attract coregamers, casuals don't give a shit about hardware.

The key to their strategy is that they wouldn't need the mass market hardware sales to move software which leaves them with a chance to sell expensive consoles that would hurt PlayStation way of building a large user base to sell software.

But the $699 PS5 Pro should be a warning to Xbox that PlayStation is welling to go for the high-end market also.

The question becomes is there a market for a high end unsubsidized Xbox and the real answer is no there isn't, there is barely a market for a base subsidized xsx.

But the catch is that it doesn't matter because it'll be unsubsidized... If they're making pure profit off of it, Microsoft won't care how many they're selling as long as they're keeping people in their ecosystem and probably still giving them an option cheaper than going to PC without them.

If you make enough models someone will buy one lol

I think youre on to something, and they dont expect to win hardware. But its important to be in the market with your own hw anyway, and then focus on developing IP first and make sure those are good.

Exclusives sell hardware and drive people to services.

See: Steam, PlayStation, Nintendo

MS putting all their shit on PS and Steam completely defeats and destroys any “platform” they have and they are really just another third party publisher.
Makes it easier under that guise to purchase a couple other big publishers though doesn’t it? It can’t be anti competitive for exclusivity if they are releasing on all platforms, right?

nintendo is the only one who has exclusives, sony puts their games on pc. on top of that sony doesnt make good games anymore.
