Pillars of Eternity |OT| You must gather your party before venturing forth.

I think
being happy that she can live and be with her sister, and not have her soul ripped out, might be more appropriate than killing her over some water
.

Also my first post-patch expert solo POTD run seems to have come to an abrupt end unless there's another route I'm forgetting.

Has anyone found a closed door that you simply can't open? I'm seeing this, and moving the mouse cursor over it, leaving the area and reentering etc. does nothing.
http://abload.de/img/doorigzch.png

I need this door open because:
I want the dungeon area for gold and XP, and possibly to find the priest's friend so I can turn the castle neutral and loot more gold. Since I presumably can't get the figurine post-patch, I can't go the sewer route
.

Iirc there are at least two doors in that place that need to be opened by the NPCs there.
The priest at the top and the animancer in the dungeon. They both offer to supply a path to the throne room if you do their bidding.
That door may be one of them.

That door is the one from
the kitchen into the dungeon, and it's the only way you can help the priest without going through the sewer or turning the keep neutral, correct?
*edit* I'm an idiot and it's NOT the door I took, so I guess it's just one-way.

Also from the Obsidian forums other people are having door problems in Raedric's Keep that may or may not fix themselves eventually.

Again from the Obsidian forums, it sounds like solo POTD XP may not have changed at all, at least for combat:
There is no increased solo XP in PotD.

Testet this afternoon XP gain after prolog, when you enter dungeon solo.

Got on my test char 417Xp--> which was added as 625 group XP. means +50%.

After patch, i done the same, solo entering the first dungon, got 417XP --> which added 625 group XP ---> 50%

Unlucky, it doesn't feel that you get more XP in PotD with this patch.

Man people are crazy to be attempting solo runs this early. If i ever do one(which is unlikely) it won't be until a few months before Pillars of Eternity 2 hits. That way i can be sure the game is as bug free as it is going to get.

That looks fine. Depending on your weapon you might consider more dex for faster attacks, but if you want to be tanky but still hit hard then I think you look good.
do you want a tank or damage dealer or something else? If you go for pure tank with shield, you can drop anything that improves dps because you never ever going to hurt anyone
More a damage dealer actually.

I gave him a 2H sword but I was considering dual wielding as well. Isn't the attack speed increase from dexterity general? Why does increasing DEX depend on the weapon?

Well today I discovered that I took the Two-Handed Style talent instead of the Two Weapon Style talent for my melee rogue. I think I still salvage it by switching to a ranged rogue but I wonder how that will work with Backstab. Oh well.

Also

Am I correct in assuming that this is a bug or is there some sort of mechanical reason that this is happening?

The graphics options have no effect on the performance im getting. I'm still getting hitches while walking the map, and random frame rate drops.

If enemy damage reduction is making you deal minimum damage with your weapon very often, fast 1-handed weapons being most likely for this to happen with, then more Dex and thus more attack speed will not help nearly as much as buffing your accuracy (for more crits) or just plain more damage.

With 2-handed weapons (aside from maybe hunting bows and implements) the damage reduction isn't that much an issue so a more balanced Might/Dex ratio might be alright

Damn, this game kicking my ass on normal. where did I do wrong?
Also, is there any way to move the aggro out of my rogue after she used backstab? I swear she's in constant low health more than Eder did.

Started over with a custom party, I really like it much better than with the NPC companions (inability to build them from level 1)

Having a lot of fun!

According to reddit/obsidian forums two-handed style does not work with ranged weapons at all.

Steam is looping the install of the patch for me. Whenever it finishes installing, it just goes back to "Update required" and I need to manually push the update. Must have done this like four times already.

Have you verified game cache integrity yet?

Finally started going forward fast in the game and so naturally I started thinking about doing an alternate party and going all dastardly evil in my choices. I just can't decide on the class and was wondering if some of them have more choices in that sense. I mean how often does evil priests, Bleak Walkers or maybe rogues get special chances to do bad stuff in the dialogue?

Act 2 sidequest spoilers:

After 1.5 hours of tinkering and trying, I've finally downed
Cali the Silent
with my solo barbarian on hard. So, so, so satisfying.

A question regarding the stronghold.
After I've killed Maerwald and have have received ownership of the stronghold, is it necessary to go down the endless paths and kill anything down there? I don't feel comfortable enough with the combat to be constantly paying attention to enemies raiding my keep, at least for now.

I hate leveling up in this game >_<

There just seem to be so many options and I'm afraid I'm going to pick the wrong talents.

Question, about how far in do you get your full party? I haven't reached
Caed Nua
yet but have done some of the sidequests in
Gilded Vale
.

You will find 4 story companions before clearing
Caed Nua
, and a 5th on the road a little past that on your way towards the big city.

Try not to think of it that way. The developers didn't put in shitty talents or spells. they're all great if you know how to use them or they suit your style of play.

Ok finished the game
Kana and the grieving mother glitched out in the final boss fight and wouldn't respond to any input, so in the end it was a
slap fight between my character, thaos and a summoned phantom.
Story wise:
So you are athiest judas awesome
Chose berath, crucible knights (but chided them), Didn't kill Raedric again because I'm a lazy ass, didn't bother with the adra dragon either. Love my durance ending :^)
Gave Thaos's soul the mercy of being torn to pieces
Here is my epilogue massive spoilers ahoy

Loved the game it was amazing
may do a cruel replay one day

Don't recommend Pale Elf as a race RP wise, but wowzers its good for tank (% based DR boost is amazing)
Double chanters works great, chanter sub-tank also works really well.
High Res is just is super good RP wise, if you are making a a tank an want to verbally shut people down, pump it.

the game defaults to easy... should I keep it at easy? I mean, I play my share of hard games, but I dont particulary SEEK them out if that makes sense?

I play all my games on the normal defualt settings, and while I love the Souls games for example, I kinda love them IN SPITE of the harshness, not because of it

edit: I forgot to say Ive never played one of these games, I was a console kid not a computer kid back in the day

The House Doemmel questline is pretty disappointing, are the others as short?
You go on maybe 3 quests for them

Ending stuff

Did you find a way to do (act III spoilers)
Berath's quest without just straight up attacking the Erik Nor dude? Been trying to figure out if there's any other way to do that quest.

I only saw that many quests for the Crucible Knights, but there's a
Talent
in the files related to them I could never figure out how to get, so I obviously missed something.

Unfortunately no. I turned on unqualified options for the first time in the entire game to double check. Was pretty disappointed, especially seeing as you have to murder hobo your way out. I did all the god quests, the Winter one can be completely solved without conflict surprisingly.

Currygan

at last, for christ's sake
time to bite, Kinguin has it at £18 for the hero version

i swear if Gaf fails me one more time I'm going to punch the first nun that crosses my path

Ok so I was looking for that special blundebuss in Act 2 and I messed up the quest option and got the
Piglet
instead. At first I decided to go back to an old save but I lost WAY to much progress. Instead I
went back to the farmer and murdered him. Lo' and behold he had it on his corpse!

I'm at the end of the quest with
Aelys, and I want to kill the animancer but he wrecks me constantly. I can kill him usually but then he casts some kind of explosion that wipes most my team.
Any tips? Thanks!

No. Start on hard, that's the difficulty it's primarily designed for.

As long as you don't choose Path of the Damned, you can change the difficulty at any time if it gets too challenging. So there's no reason to go for easy from the beginning.

I sort of disagree -- one reason to go for easy is if you want an easy-ish experience. Especially if you've never played the old games like Baldur's Gate (I haven't, and that poster hasn't), easy difficulty can still be tough (I had a lot of trouble with it). Of course you're correct that the difficulty can be changed later on. Another reason one might want easy difficulty is if they have limited play time. That can be a very key factor for a 30+ hour RPG if they are primarily interested in the story.

I ended up with my current situation of different save files in solo expert path of the damned runs, and an easy multi-member party run. I have "reasons" for both, just perhaps not reasons everyone would agree with because everyone enjoys different things. :p

So Gaf i bought this and I started a new game on Normal with a Human monk. A bit disappointed that none of the portraits cater to a bald bearded monk :(

Loving this so far, made it to this forest where I saved this dwarf and had 2 1v3 battles and got destroyed by a bear...What a rush.

I have a question, as a monk I always want to be unarmed correct and using the lightest armor?

Armor probably (unless you're getting destroyed, but you want some damage to get through); you don't have to be unarmed, but as I recall unarmed does the most damage till near the endgame after the 1.03 buff. You'd want weapons for their extra bonuses rather than anything else (hatchets are a pretty good choice as they're grouped with unarmed in the Peasant Weapon Specialisation).

Just completed this and I loved it. This and Shadowrun make me glad that Kickstarter is around.

I had some complaints about portrait options, the stronghold, character attributes and a couple of other minor issues but other than that I've loved my experience with the game. Story, characters and world building were all great and it was nice to lay a game like this again. The only bugs I encountered were minor and didn't really affect my enjoyment too much.

Anyone here get the Champion or Royal Edition? Are these editions worth it? I think I would really only look at the almanac or strategy guide. Thinking of pulling the trigger so I can play this during the long weekend.

If you want the very cool looking almanac you can go with the Champion edition. Or you could do Hero and just buy the actual book online (its very nice btw). Iirc on Steam you can always upgrade to a different edition later so you can start with Hero and if you love what you see upgrade to get the goodies and help Obsidian out. If you arent a fan of Pillars than you just saved yourself some money.

edit:
i should stress that if you like gaming books at all get the physical Guidebook. Its titled Volume One so there will probably be more to accompany it when more games in the universe come out.
